If you had to ballpark an elevation at which the snow became pleasant, what would it be?
Sweeeet! Are you saying that you were able to drive just past the first switchback on FS 1540?
That's some fun terrain up there. Did you use the summer trail bridge or cross the river some other way?
Pretty much from the snow park.
And yes, we like to keep our K.P.M.'s ( Kickturns Per Meter) to the minimum.....
Good effort Trevor. I climbed that a few months ago & thought it might ski well, if you're a bad-ass can keep puckered-up.
Rock on.
Did you start skinning from the Salmon la Sac Sno-Park? Straight up skin track, I see...nice! Kick turns are a sign of weakness.
Sure looks like very nice and deep snow. Thanks for posting.
jkordel, you're kidding! Incredibly frustrating. It couldn't have been more clear. And I even double-checked that we weren't going to get blown up on the north side of the creek.
Nice pictures eatskisleep. Here is Chair and Kaleetan as seen from Denny probably a few hours prior to your photos based on the shadows.
Thanks to those that stayed well away from the permit boundary area Wednesday. However, a few groups got too close in upper Great Scott which prevented some intended shots from being placed.
Thanks for sharing - that looks really nice, and reminds me of some mountain ranges in Slovakia.
Welcome mpmp. Your photos and writing really capture the magic of the place.
Thanks for posting. Your last photo is really a great perspective of the Snow Lake / Chair Peak environs.
@stefan-feller: Not sure what the person in the rearview did to deserve the bird. Collateral damage i guess. Skiing is hell and all....
@mtnpavlas: Thanks! I freaking hope so. But now they brought us all this scary avalanche cycle....
Major kudos for effort - I have to believe the snow gods will pay you back in spades one day.
Glad you got up there! We drank a toast to Poli’ahu after our last lap
Your dog is super cute, Radka!
The benefit of using the Media tab is one can use it to write a photo story by utilizing the media + description fields - more on that here. Of course, it's just as easy to use the embed image icon directly in the HTML editor/window.
Regarding "Let me see if I can add a picture via a link." ... one needs to use the URL of the actual picture rather than the viewport from the photo platfor...
What a unique TR! Thanks for sharing, and good on you to nab it.
so what did the person in review mirror do to deserve the bird?
Welcome to 'Merica! Lots of effort to go nowhere! This be a good story over beers.
East coasters know a thing or two about trimming ski runs. Most of the BC ski terrain in Vermont has been carefully gladed over the years by crusty old telemarker types and now the new generation.
There are definitely some spots that could use some brush removal around here, like Yodelin and even the inbounds terrain at Alpental.
Yes, "turns" were had... about two total on some short downhills.
Glad you guys enjoyed. It was short-lived and the trails are now back to their mostly gravel status.
Cool info about the snow goddess... you thanked her rival!
Nice! Reaping the benefits of pre snow planning, I’m forever looking around home and saying “ that would sure ski great if we would get enough snow on it”.
Thanks for the report! So great to be able to get “turns” in the back yard, always makes a smile.
Thanks for the report, lemons into lemonade, perfect!
Nice going! Nothing better than setting the unique bar high. I’m not a big Hawaii fan, but I would love to ski the tallest mountain over its base in the world.
@grant @stefan It was a really fun day! We were the only skiers on the mountain that day and people were cheering us on! A park ranger drove by and did a double-take before giving us a 🤙
@telemack Hiked it in 2017! Definitely requires a 4wd vehicle, the rangers won’t let you beyond the visitors center without one. Road conditions are updated here:
@seedy A Covid-negative test prior to flying, plus a second Covid-negative test immediately after deplaning. Did everything by the book to travel safely as required by the State of Hawaii. And got another Covid test upon returning. If you choose not to travel, that’s up to you.
Looks like great fun. When snow hits Bham the trails are something special. The "Ski Bellingham" poster needs to be taken uphill of the Alabama St. bridge with skiers striding across and the bay and downtown in the background. I've moved back East but those snowy days in the City of Subdued Excitement are memorable.
Great smiles!
The pure novelty of skiing right from our house just a few feet above sea level was something we couldn't miss! Good to hear that "turns" were had in Bellevue.
So I guess there are numerous ways to add pictures now - I can add a picture in the body of the message or I can go to the tab "media". And then I can either upload a picture or embed a link. Let me see if I can add a picture via a link.
Hey Radka, good to see a TR from the weekend from the Eastside - most of what I saw on FB was from the Seattle area. When I saw your title, I was thinking "skiing where at Grass Lawn?" - haha, "5 feet down to the tennis courts" about sums it up.
On Saturday, I went to visit a friend of mine on skis for the first time in my 15 years in Bellevue, and it was fun just for the heck of it.
Looking forward to more TR's from you.
Sounds like fun.
I haven't done much skiing in Kitsap County but I did ski down the road to the beach at Illahee State Park a couple times years ago.
I am really missing the ski bus to Crystal this year.
Where are the pictures. 😉
It will warm up and get heavier, but may stay preserved on north facing aspects for a while. At least there is a base now!
Nice - I hit the Othello headwall just behind where this picture was taken as well as BEHI classics McClellan col and Dawson face. I was thinking fish scales would have been the optimal tool for the day - there's rarely a slope worth ripping skins for.
Thanks for the continued reports out there. May get out there for some mellow terrain/tree skiing in between work days this week. Looks fun. Cheers.
Nice! I hiked it in 2016 and it's on my list too.
Did you rent a 4WD vehicle? Is there a way to check road conditions?
Ha! wasn't much to see most of the way, except fog, snow-laden branches and, increasingly, our ski tips.
Any snowfall onto an existing base on Green should make Gold Creek and the other trails skiable. Too bad we did not get that this time?
That happened in 1997, I think, when a double snowstorm collapsed the roofs of the OC Library, an Albertson's, and my in-laws' skylight. A day later I got to ski the Gold Creek trail :-)
