I’m not aware of proposals for a ski area on Silverstar. The one proposed for the Methow Valley was on Sandy Butte, a bit farther east. There were also proposals for Liberty Bell basin, Cutthroat Pass...
During the big snow year of 1999, Garth Ferber and I skied the SW Face of Buckner as a loop. At that time you could still drive to the Cascade Pass trailhead. We bivied at the Boston Basin trailhead a...
I called it the NE Couloir because it descends to the NE.
Skinning on the descent, eh?
Happy birthday, Mike!
Thanks for the report!
That's dedication!
Curious how you got the first shot, which is clearly an aerial. Drone?
Re: Bladder Management
Ziploc bags are your friend.
Thanks for the report. Making a loop out of it by bike is an elegant solution.
Cool clouds in your pictures!
What is that wooden structure? Is that the bridge over the Cascade River? I haven't been there in over 30 years, so it's not familiar.
Great photos. Looping around Logan via the Banded Glacier seems like a good route, with better skiing. The Fremont Glacier has nice views, but the skiing isn't exceptional. When I was skiing routes li...
Folks with the original (1977) edition of "Green Fred" may have read his comment about Ragged Ridge on p. 313: "Most of the peaks are still relatively unvisited in comparison to similar areas in the r...
My brother Carl and I did the first ascent of what we dubbed the Mesahchie Icefall Couloir in mid-September 1984. We climbed a few short ice pitches in the icefall and had a couple of smooth 45-degree...
That sounds like a nice route. Are you aware of previous ski parties doing it?
What a difference 35 years makes.
This is what the Damnation Creek road looked like in March 1986, when Mark Bebie, Brian Sullivan and I went that way to make the first winter ascents of Triumph and...
Great pictures! Love the winter scene of Mt Triumph.
Back in the day, it was thought to be essential to climb any seriously steep line you intend to ski. That doesn't seem to be the practice on the NW Couloir of Shuksan, but it sounds like it might have...
Both sides of the Cascade Crest in this area are steep enough to avalanche and kill you, and it has happened in the past here. Folks should not consider this a low-hazard area, especially given curren...
I'm impressed by how well the snowskate worked up there. Cool.
More information about Mel Gourlie and his experiences living near Windy Pass during the Great Depression can be found here:

I spent last week in and around the Methow Valley. During one of our day trips, we hiked the PCT from Slate Peak to Windy Pass and back. I was interested to see how the Gourlie cabin has been holding...
Congrats Mike!
Nice!
It's amazing how that face on Sherman Peak loads up with snow and ice and becomes a good ski run, then collapses a few years later. Will it happen again?
I posted some more photos of the McAllister Glacier in Random Tracks here:
Wow. Let's hope this was a perfect storm and not the new normal.
Some other valley-like glaciers that have diminished a lot in my memory:
Silver Glacier on Mt SpickardBanded Glacier on Mt LoganSouth Cascade Glacier below Sentinel PeakLyman Glacier on Chiwawa MtnHo...
Some nice moody shots there.
I'm interested to see the continued decline of the McAllister Glacier. The east side of the glacier flowed continuously to the valley below 5200ft in 2005, when I walked...
Seems like the only way to manage traffic and reduce damage to lookouts and other structures once they become well known is through a reservation system. Or close them entirely, as was done at Winches...
Beautiful, thanks!
