Holy crap, powder framing. Great shots. I love the second one -- thanks for the report. We're up for a hut trip near that area next week and now I'm drooling...
I've always appreciated your beta. Could you PR me with some ideas for an introduction to the Coast Range? you see, I'm jaded about the Sea to Sky highway. I hate it. I'm hoping and guessing the Coast Range has alternatives that don't include that awful dangerous road.

I drove over the pass last weekend, looked up that chute and thought for the first time in many years "Hmmmm that looks like a good ski".
I guess I wasn't the only one.
Nice work!

Nice work. I love that area. One of my most memorable days is skiing down the glacier below your route. Always wanted to get up in there to ski more. How time flies? I was so peeved I had to go to Las Vegas (ski-mountaineer hell) for a conference. I didn't even want to look at the pictures as my arm chair stokage may just entice me to do something stupid :).
Nice - busy week for you! Makes me want to quite work (it's been a long week, but not of skiing...).

The weathermen screwed up again, a sunny forecast materialized to a blend of morning sunshine and clouds (beautiful sunrise) giving way to all high clouds. The surface conditions above 10k were variable, with mostly glaze surface ice from 11k to 12.2k, with the occasional patch of windslab. I have wanted to ski the NE or the E face for sometime, but access from the north entails bushwhack...
We set the skin track Sun morning and got to about 5k and backed off. We did 4 tap tests, the first failed below Friday's rain crust while digging the column. Two sluffed in the top 15 in. of fluff at 5-10 taps from the wrist. The fourth failed on the rain crust at 5-10 from the wrist. Slightly unsatisfied ;), we dug two rutschblocks. The first sluffed on flex of the knees. The second sheared quickly and clean on the rain crust at knee flex. T...
I'm old(er) and dumb. Not sure I could keep up on the climb (and not so sure on the descent but would lvoe to try!); otherwise would love to join in on something like that.
Another nice descent guys.
I am kind of young and a little dumb, can I come with you?

If any one is interested who is safe on steep stuff, let me know.
Feel free to keep me in mind for your tour ambitions in the Olympics. I tend to wait until the spring to turn my attention westward as the access i so much easier but this season I am already day dreaming about some trips that I have in mind. I am available to ski most days and ste...
Nice Pete -- I've been wondering how that north bowl access was... good work.
Way to get after it, Pete. It's so awesome how the low-elevation snowpack lets us harvest the range's full vertical potential.
I can vouch for powdherb: he's young and dumb. The ability to laugh at oneself is crucial.
Hey Brian, Erick here, we've ridden steven's on storm days several times over the last few years, I think.
Anyhow as for Icicle Ridge/Steep Creek/Tumwater Canyon, If our weather stays similar to what we've been seeing lately I would say a comparable run could be had for the next couple weeks if your into riding avalanche wreckage gully debris (lower portion). I would be extremely leary if more than a few inches of snow fell in the vicinity at an...

Thanks for the video, Pete. We looked your direction from the shoulder of Chair Peak, but your tracks were hidden from view!
Nice photos, man with all this sunshine lately. I hardly recognize the place.
Too bad the photos posted here on TAY are useless and the text mildly sarcastic. ;)
Edited to add, now that I've had a chance to look - cool photos out at that link (with just enough text to help tell the story). The ones here don't do them justice.

I forgot to mention that this trip was my first outing with the ABS pack (I have the 30 litre escape). I like it! The pack feels fine, and although I was skiing with guides and didn't pack as much gear as I normally would, I'm sure I could fit everything in for day tripping. I have to figure out the ski carrying system a bit better though. Christoph (the guide who owns the hut) is waiting on his. I put a lot of stock into the opinion of an highly experienced avy tech/full mountain guid...
very well done. Good work! did it seem like it would remain possible for a while, or is the lower snow getting thin? I have always wanted to do something like that!
Gary, thanks for another great day and some tantalizing suggestions in your TR for future expeditions for some brave souls.
I forgot to mention that I climbed all the way up the road from 4th Crossing without putting my skins on. I'd done that once a few years ago on a a day with a similar combination of snow and weather conditions, so I figured it was worth a try.

You Wascals! sounds like one great tour leads to another.
I've done a ski trip trip up in deception basin late, late (July 6), many around hurricane/obstruction, and one up deer park road. I want to ski the N side of baldy, that big bowl visible from sequim. Its a painful looking trip up the s. side, but I'll likely do it this spring. If any one is interested who is safe on steep stuff, let me know.
You wild and craazzzy guys! ;D ;D
very big cajones me thinks, yessir!

No weather problem in the Baker BC on Wednesday. Yesterday it was bluebird, felt bottomless and enough faceshots that would make Peter North jealous. Just had to stay in the shade. Outta of the shade the snow was creamy.
I must confess. I did cheat to get out to Artist Point. Photographer Steve Matera got me a free lift ticket. However, we did skin and boot from that point on. ...
Just saw this on TGR. It's a must-read folks. Nice one PH.
I was up there with you and the bearded one. It did look like he took a little bit of a slide on the way down. What I did find that was really scary was that layer about 60-70 cm down that did not fail on any shovel compression tests, but did POP out with a Q1 when I did the shovel shear test. Pretty stable, however if it becomes less stable or you hit a trigger spot, bye bye. Very scary slab indeed.

What more could you ask for?
Shorter hike, longer run and a lecture from the man!
Guess it wasn't the same guy with the bullhorn at Sunrise?
Looked like a great time.
Way to drop a knee Brenda!

Headed up to Lake and with Snoslut, GregM and some new acquaintances. Were lured by the chance of clearing skies in the north cascades, but our aspirations of mt. ann were quickly squashed by the weather gods. So, we lapped the 600' or so knoll below the shoulder to lake ann; nice and sheepish and surprisingly deep snow! Awesome area, have to go back when things clear up.
you guys really took your time getting this TR up, huh? ;)
We came up thru the "meadows" on the north side and gained the w ridge...hence our viewpoint on humpback. Nice run down to annette off silver though....worth a visit
There were a few small ones like this, mostly coming down toward Heart Lk. Didn't see any evidence of huge ones, but sure they get them off the rock face of Bonanza.
Was there any evidence of slides coming down into the valley bottom? In the early 80s, a buddy and I made an early spring trip into Lyman Lake and became stormbound for a couple days and nights. We were particularly impressed with the path that comes off the Isella Glacier on Bonanza.
Wow, you were really in there! thanks for your TR. You did the TR once you were home right? I thought it would be a long while until Holden had cell phone/blackberry reception.
I've done North Star in the summer and been in there a bunch while chill'n at Holden. Would LOVE to get in there in the winter (i'll break trail ;) ) as that area isn't accessible until late spring if you're coming from the Lake Wenatchee side.

Thanks, Ron...I'm new to this computer stuff, but I think I'm beginning to detect a pattern where the relatively sheltered location of the Paradise telemetry slightly overestimates the new/cumulative snowfall in more open areas and sometimes considerably underestimates the wind speeds...
Nice report, Gary, Thanks.
There's a lot of good info there in a modicum of words.
