Great TR Boot.

How far could you drive on Money Creek Rd? Is it still blocked just a couple miles up the road?

After skinning up a ways, we found a ourselves a dilemma.  Opt for the time consuming and safer 2 mile round about way of meandering through the valley up to gain access to our ridge, or cut it short up the steep face and shallow short gully to cut significant time and milage?  Although we had reservations we went for the second option.  Kyle was caught in a slide that carried him...
Nobody in the "hood" Saturday back there & the skiing was excellent. That was you guys setting a tent on the flat below the first drop I presume? We took the center lines & dropped the sweet little (kinda hidden) bowl on skiers left looking down. Got another couple of runs & called it good. Back to the car at just about 3:00. Pic's coming. Very surprising how few folks were in the East Peak / Cement Basin / & Beyond  on Saturday.
Looking good there, Silas.  I also want to post in this thread just because I like the name: Wankspitze.  Still snowing here in Finland, but still no mountains either.
It was great to finally get out on a trip with another fellow Picketophile!   And you are so right, it is nice to have fun with your grown up kids, and watch them give you advice instead of the other way round!

Zehner turned out to be a bit more than I had expected.  The ski into the hut had lots of flats, and scenery that required many stops for photos.  And the hut beckoned for a little snack time around noon in the sun.  Then the trip over to Zehner summit had agai...
Our theory was that a natural slide had hit the road, prompting DOT to head out and try to bomb the rest loose. The three bombholes we could see generated but one little sluff. The face in question catches the morning sun - bombs went off ~1 pm?
Nice pictures.  Can't beat the combination of powder and sun.

It sure seemed like DOT was able to get some slides to come down.  We left the pass right after the road re-opened and the right lane was covered with avi debris;  they had the heavy machinery working to clear it.  The clean up also took a half hour to hour longer then originally planned, suggesting they got a larger slide than expected.
14 miles eh.?that's getting after it. I am impressed.
Thanks for the information.
Love the B&W shot - seems like it came from another age...

I am afraid probably will crust overnight.  Looks like north aspects will hold in nicely despite the warming.  Probably will be busy on those tomorrow!

Your slope was nicely crusted by about 6pm, but with all of today's new snow, it shouldn't matter much.

Conditions were ultra-stable, so it was a big suprise that the DOT closed I-90 and a crew t...
A photo from yesterday shot by Suze:

Oh right, and the skin in was about 14 miles starting a mile outside of mazama. Pretty flat and while I didn't because I was borrowing a friend's skis I would highly recommend using kickwax
We skinned in and camped in the trees just off of the hairpin. Alli got some really nasty blisters so we were able to catch a ride with a couple of snowmobilers on the way out.

If you could get access to sleds I would highly recommend it as it takes less than a half hour as opposed to several. That said, especially on week days even with a few sledders you more or less have the place to yourself.

Hope that helps
Great TR and my favourite place but a little confused by your TR. Did you hike in from Mazama or take a snowmobile and did you camp  or was it a day trip? Just asking because I want to do it .
Any beta would be appreciated.
Thanks
Great day!  I had a blast and certainly feel it in my quads this morning.  Thanks again for the great tour!

Scott
Jim, My friend Scott took that one with my wife's camera. It is also my favorite from the day.
I love that photo with just the person and the shadows pointing along the ski line. They're all nice, but I love the simple composition with the bold shadows in that one.
That many teliers in the group is like the old fish scale days!
Turn, fall, turn, turn, fall....

Hey, I resemble that remark.  Last week it was all Teles, but not so crowded.  Glad you had good visibility AND nice powder.
Thanks for the report and parking info, JD.  We thought it would be a superb choice yesterday, but I didn't want to do the drive!  That many teliers in the group is like the old fish scale days!
Turn, fall, turn, turn, fall....
John
Great to meet you up there! It's fun finding gems in topo maps.

We kept skiing until ~4pm. NW facing stuff was getting heavy and manky by then at ~4200. Pass temperature was ~45F when we left. The W bound lanes of 90 were closed for a few hours due to avy control. Big booms on sunny afternoons are a little different. Conditions were just such that we could lap our up and downtracks without putting skins on. Only instability we noted was in small ~3-6" wet sluffs running on a...
Great report and photos - thanks!
did 12 miles 1800 vf of pensioner's powder on ski patrol at MTTA today ;D
I posted the movie for this trip this morning. Thanks for your patience!

Absolutely brilliant, Dan.  Way to overcome the siren song of that POS volcano. ;)
Thanks for the note - was just wondering how things were around there.

I've rock-climbed there but never seen it with snow.  Another creative outing by Dan H.
Dan - There's lots of powder in Washington like Pandora states, but the avi danger up here is way too high  8).  Nice work man.
We had one firm steep section where I used a ski crampon because I brought them, but booting the 200 feet might have been easier. I'd leave the crampons.
I think you're right about Floyd's route, Ron.  I forgot to mention that improved plows & construction of the comfort station at Narada by the CCC's shifted the winter approach to that point by the later thirties.  I suspect this may have been the origin of the name 'Old Trail'.
Even better with today's fabulous powder!!!
What else would the Italians use?  Good to hear you made it to Italy- Ciao.

Hi Ron, I'm sure you've read "A Year in Paradise". The author described his weekly hike from the Paradise Lodge to Longmire for supplies and mail throughout the year. I often wondered about his route. Now I want to re read it and see if it follows your adventure. Fun trip report.

Thanks, Don.

Now that's core. Government issue no doubt.
Sweet...! Glad to see you made it over there. :)
Nice--I just climbed out there last fall--trailhead from the same State Park.  Beautiful place--nice 5.6 climb of 6 pitches in a perfect setting.  Never would have thought to ski there--especially with Shasta a mere 10 miles away!
That's allright.  Once you eventually become sponsored for your climbing skillz & mountaineering achievements, you won't remember you paid a 1/2 week's pay for those Oaks!  ;)
How are Jenny's blister doing? Is she enjoying her first europe ski trip?
I recommend skiing powder in Washington, Dan.

All my fault, eh? I don't even know how to reply to that . . .  >:(

Actually, my recollection is that I'm the one who refused to descend any farther, but we can pretend that Amar was calling all the shots. ;)

hi amar - your ski mountaineering site has been a great resource for me so i thank you for that.

There's a notable difference in snowpack between anything west of Cayoosh Pass and east.  Snowfall drops off dramatically after say the Downton creek drainage and decreases a lot at Brew in Lillooet.  It stays cold so the ice climbing is ok but the area doesn't get a lot of snow.  I'd say anything below about 1500m isn't great skiing around there - due to...
Thanks for report.....waiting patiently for video.
WAY COOL!!!!!!!
Interesting TR, Lee. For those who are unfamiliar with the mountains of SW BC, it would be good to point out that this is the big Mount Brew (2891 m) located 12 km S of Lillooet, not the better known Mount Brew (1757 m) located 18 km SW of Whistler. See
