RonL and I met in Poulsbo and headed up to Hurricane Ridge discussing the options. After chatting with the friendly rangers we headed past the ski lift and Sunrise Point to a few turns and a quick boot to the Angeles saddle. Visibility was great---the Strait was in clouds but we could see almost all the peaks. Warm, sunscreen morning; very firm with 1-2" new that softened quickly.
From the saddle we skinned the glades and west a bit to an obvious snow tongue and rocky gullies. One whippet between us made it interesting (we soon ditched our poles), especially a few icy-rock bits in my duckbills. We wound left around the upper part of the peak, with more steep snow and scrambling, the outcome in doubt until the very end. The clouds were rolling in good so we shook hands on top, I posed for Ron's camera, and we descended.
10 minutes after we clicked back in it was 100-meter visibility, but we got a nice 1500' line through the open trees more or less straight down to the road. A quick hitch back to the visitors' center and we were gone.
Though I'd wished for an axe, and possible crampons, it was a very 8) outing. There were very isolated unstable pockets, either loaded lee slopes from the last week or some sunwarmed spots, but all small and quite shallow. Spring is a'comin'!

Nice Work !
Thanks, bro. I saw from the TRs that you-all were busy at Paradise. Stay in touch.
That's a nice line in the photo. The trip sounds like an adventure with ice, rocks, wanting climbing gear... Go Mack, go!
There aren't that many reports that come in from the peninsula. I am wondering how many "regulars" there are touring there. Any guesses? Is it a tight community of people or a loose pack of lone wolves? grrrr....

I think it's a community of loose people. ;)
Nice tour Mack. I assume that the gate opened at a reasonable time as you did not mention it. That is always a concern of mine when considering a trip up there.
Good to see the Oly wolf pack on the powder prowl.

I believe we got through the gate a little before 9.

We hit the gate just after 8:30 and there were a few cars up ahead of us. Opening time is a bit variable, but if you follow the weather and phone the ONP road line (dial information or get it from the website) you can get a sense of when it opens.
It's more predictable than Longmire but open less often in winter conditions.
Mack,
Good job. Did you ski back to the Switchback trailhead? How did the north side of Klahane ridge look? We had homework on Sunday but glad to see you're keeping tabs on the Oly's. Looking forward to some good tours this spring.
