Awesome trip.  I'm heading there next week for four days with WAH.  Snowpack permitting, some steep lines sound great.  It seems most ascents are ski/bootable -- any reason for crampons/whippet?  Thanks.

That's a deep thought! As a old spelunker now you got me wondering why they call it Cave ridge. anybody know?

There are several caves there that are developed in marble.  The most extensive cave, called Newton Cave, is 600' deep and 1800' total passage length, and includes several roped drops.

Caving, especially in alpine caves involving...
If you keep high above the creek (climber's right)  it isn't too bad, but the first bit is always the hardest, and worse in low snow.

Way to git it, Lee!
Ausgezeichnet. We skied der Schartenkopf (south of Kuhtai) two years ago with the Trommsdorffs, accessing it by snowmobile from Niedertai. You could see Greiskogel from the summit.

Anyone know how to get umlauts to appear on this forum? The HTML ü doesn't seem to work . . .
Ay Carumba!! Many thanks for the alert!
Great trip and great report Ron. You led us a merry chase and I thoroughly enjoyed the adveture.  ;DI think the good snow started again about 3900'. That two inch crust between the top and 3900' must have developed in about 24 hours. Yikes! Yes, a little wallowing on the banks of the Nisqually.  Thank you for not posting those shots!!
Day 6 - Peak 8600 and Day 7 - ski out

Great...thanks...cave ridge is now scarred ::)
Jeremy and Mike.  Did I see you Sat at Backpacker's Supply?
Hi Lisa,
It definitely was a great day. It was nice meeting both of you and hopefully we can ski sometime soon.
Keegan (& Aaron)
Yes, I also believe you are correct in that the phenomena of one spraying snow into one's own face while decending a sweet line in powder can also be referred to as a face shot.  Nice work, it looked fun!
NW girl ,
We did both! If you must know we navigated around the top of the thing and cut it with our skis ;)
I am in awe at all of your tr's.
wow, it just gets better and better!
I like that paraphrase!  Yeah, we did luck out with our ride (Thanks Monica and Jeff!)
Don't forget the bridge over the Columbia on hwy 97 is closed. You'll need to detour to The Dalles.
Alternate Tolkein paraphrase: "Not all who vomit are drunk."
;)
Brave move, counting on a hitch to crystal that late in the day, esp. on a Sunday.
Mileage stats and that kind of thing...

3.14.08 = 3.5 miles - 2600' gain/1200' drop (approx.)
3.15.08 = 2.0 miles - 1700' gain/1700' drop (approx.)
3.16.08 = 11  miles - 1200' gain/4300' drop (approx.)
Yo Pandora - I didn't know you were sponsored by Oakley?  8)
Hi Ron,  I'm sure you've read "A Year in Paradise".  The author described his weekly hike from the Paradise Lodge to Longmire for supplies and mail throughout the year.  I often wondered about his route.  Now I wnt to re read it and see if it follows your adventure.  Fun trip report.
Don aka Rusty Knees
That will work!  Thanks.......
It might be comforting to know that the 15-16th held whiteout conditions for us at Chinook Pass with dashed hopes of descents of Naches and Yakima. :(  Nice pics though!  Looks like a fun trip though and still managed some great turns!
Great read, nice writing!  Sounds like a great trip.  Red Mtn. is a great area!
Robert -- great photos -- much better than ours.  I counted at least 15 descents on Saturday, but it looks like other than a bit more crust on the drop in, you still had great conditions Sunday as well.

I love the photos high up in the slot.
Basically just get on 97 and head north!

It's in south central washington about 30 minutes north of the Columbia river on hwy 97.  The nearest town is Goldendale.
Nice looking area!  What state is this in and more specifically.  how do I get to the trail heads from Bend, Or?
Cool maybe next season I'll try that out.

Day 5- Sessel and Pk 8600 - http://www.leelau.net/2008/coast2008_03/day5/

I've heard of some caving up there with some narrow squeezes...
It takes between 1 or 2 hours to get to one of the good skiing slopes from the parking area (there is a small primitive pull out area right at the top of the pass just past the Satus Pass sign).  It depends on whether or not you are breaking trail or get to follow a snowmobile track and which hill you are aiming for.

You can get to the old ski hill in about 20 minutes, but it doesn't have much vert.

I think it was in one of Beckey's guides that there used to be caves, but they were dynamited for safety reasons.
The following link has this to say, "On the way down we visited Cave Ridge. Caves were not hard to find at all. We found about a dozen and a half. A lot of the cave entrances where real small. Many were too small for a human, and all were slimy and not very inviting on such a pretty day. We noticed official cave registers at a couple of openings. We hiked the trail tha...

Ron, congratulations to you and your group for reviving this historical route!...but why did you wait a year to post this TR?   :)

Opps  ::); there's another one I gotta fix.
Thanks, Gary for pointing that out and for the great additional info.
I find the historical info about the early Paradise skiers fascinating.  Thank you for being so forthcoming with what...
I've only been up there in summer. I was wondering what it'd look like in winter.
Donno why it's called 'Cave Ridge.'
I was just wondering if you meant 'circumnavigated' rather than 'circumcised.' Kinda different meanings.  ::)

I actually thought the skiing was pretty good unless you found it necessary to turn.

My new favorite ronj quote  :)
Toby - we went in on Friday night and there were 4 skis outside.  We slept inside on the lower level to not bug anyone as we wanted to leave early the next morning.  As we were up and out of there by about 730am we didn't actually confirm how many people were there.  Then we exited on Sat night so not too sure how many people were there but the parking lot was full - mind you there were a lot of daytrippers around.

Next time I'm going to try to climb j...
Nice job on Aussie, Lee. I have wanted to ski a combo platter of Aussie Couloir and Stonecrop Face in the same day. Stonecrop Face is a spectacular ski in a like setting, and I have yet to ski Aussie Couloir. Maybe someday I will get to combine the two.... How many people where at the hut on a Saturday night?
We saw many signs of activity from Saturday, mostly point releases and sluffs.  Some had produced slides large enough to cause concern.  We saw no such activity on Sunday.  Maybe less solar radiation or just more time to consolidate.
Ron, congratulations to you and your group for reviving this historical route!...but why did you wait a year to post this TR?   :)  I wonder how many parties have done it since the 70's, when I did approximately your line on wooden Bonna 2400's several times.  There's a variation of the 'Old Trail' that stays closer to the Nisqually rim along the abandoned powerline corridor.  It has an additional short up, but you can ski down to Ricksecker Point without crossing the pl...

Nice report, Ron. Thanks for an interesting trip idea and for letting us join you. I think you meant to say "WSW" of the Visitor Center, right?

Good eye, Amar.  Right you are.  I'll fix that.

That looks like some really pleasant, enjoyable terrain.  Some time when I am coming from Oregon way I will have to try er out.  About how long does it take on average to get to one of the good high points from the parking area? Where do you park?

Glad you made it back without a hairy ride.

Years ago, Gary Vogt (pronounced "vote"), the "last of the breed" and a 30+ year vetran of skiing Paradise and surrounds, showed me on a map where the "Old Trail" came down from the old campground at Paradise (the old campground was in the Dead Horse Creek Basin, ESE of the Visitor's Center) to the road near Frog Heaven.

Nice report...

Kind of circumcised Cave ridge.

Gosh, I didn't even realize the ridge had the sort of body parts that get circumcised ::)
Nice ,very nice !
Cloudveil take note if these guys would had tan pants instead of those hot black ones they mighta got that 10,000' day in ! Note the thread "spring ski pants" in random tracks.
We scoped the route from the South. Aneroid remained obscured by a peak in the direct line of sight. It looks like you would head down the Fly creek drainage and stay high so as not to descend to the Imnaha. I'm ready to do that traverse, but I suspect it will be a few years of exploration to get that dialed in as an offering to guests. Something that also crossed my mind about a traverse and a night out: Megamid and Mountain House vs yurt, draft beer, little smokies and salmon? Hmmmmmmm......
Good times, Red, and thanks for laying down some good track.  A few more photos can be found here  http://picasaweb.google.com/bjwalker75/CannonMtnMarch2008
Ron. Sorry we got side tracked, I lost you guy's after Longmire and was following Jerry up to Paradise and when we got there, no Ron.  From the pictures at lest you could see what it was you were skiing. We sure couldn't at B Bowl. We sat and ate lunch at the top waiting for a clearing, it never happened. Glad you had a good tour.
