Nice job. I wish I coulda left work early this week for something like this tour. It's always treated me well when we get these early "faux corn" type conditions, and can be knocked off in less than a half day if that's all you have.
Thanks for the pics!
Anyone know who was night skiing Coyboy ridge Monday night? Lots of adreneline filled hoots, hollars, and other wierd/interesting nocturnal verbalizations woke me clean out of a peaceful slumber. Moonlight madness and crazed nighttime fun!

My opinion:
Doesn't seem this conversation is all that helpful when we set about guessing about people's motives i.e. the Park Service. I have no doubt their goal is to 'serve' the public interest and I also have no doubt that their staff is way too skimpy to acheive that goal even in a modest way: see lack of equipment and manpower to keep Paradise open.

Vogtski: Good point on the waste of time and tax payer money. The Park does some weird things and I think a lot of it has to do with the "this is the way we've always done it" approach and a difficulty to try new approaches. Similar problem with the 410 road.
I posted my TR to share an awesome experience. I posted the rant to warn any others of the current access conditions and to see if some Park Ranger might be lurking and jump in with a reply...

Earlier this season the NPS repeatedly plowed the Valley & Reflection Lake roads. I was told this was to get a head start on spring opening. The deep cuts drifted back in within a week, so the work was a complete waste of money and taxpayer's precious recreation time. Bulldozers have been used to prematurely open the Paradise Valley road the past couple Springs, leaving a disgraceful mess of hundreds of snapped-off trees. Too bad they can't show the same enthusiam for snow remo...
I know this is somewhat off of the original topic, but to reply to the previous comment...
The services that National Parks provide should not cater only to who spends the most. If that was the case we would have roads up all sides of Mount Ranier, more big RV campgrounds and fewer trails or winter access.
Unfortunately we all seem to adopt the idea that "you get what you pay for" and the fact is with public lands we all pay (entrance fees are not the...

Nice work Armin - good job knocking it off!
T/F: premature road opening would lead to parking/sanitation issues, and cars being left in the way of continuing work.
I'm willing to bet that more of the budget is paid for by people who are looking forward to a conventional, fully-plowed, full-amenities opening, than by the rare skier who is likely never to be satisfied with the state of winter access anyway -- that is until they suck it up and realize that backcountry skiing is not about convenience.

North peak of Denny into Pineapple was pretty good, but lower Pineapple was kind of manky, as expected. Still worth doing. Saw someone ski off top of Denny before I summitted, and he then toured up Heather towards Bryant. That was probably a good one, but I was too late to do that.
Plowing the road may suck for those fortunate enough to own a snowmobile but it does allow people to access White River via bike. Personally, if they are going to plow the road down to the asphalt they might as well open up the bare sections to motorists.
Pretty funny to see a report about Red Hill here.
I grew up in Meredith and have hiked to the top of Red Hill at least 50 times.
But I never skied there, being a WV brat...
Glad you had fun!

GregL, Were you on the Kailasssss or the Trabs?
That was me on the Trabs, Kevin on the Atomics . . . the top went well, after we figured out we should have put on the ski crampons at the BOTTOM!
Great to meet you both.
Ayuh....glad to hear you had some wicked good turns! I grew up in Bangor Maine and used to ski at a similar little ski area called Ski Horse Mountain. It was awesome- two runs with a rope tow and a T-Bar. On Saturday nights they had a baked bean supper and opended the hill to tobogganing! Too bad all the little places have fallen by the wayside....
Nice chatting with you guys. Were you on the Baker Lights or MX:11's?
yup, that was me and ethan rearing for another great day on the mtn. Amazing wasn't it?!

Great to have that combination of blue bird weather, powder, and fairly stable conditions! Made the long Friday night drive worth the effort (also took us about 11 hours to get there from Seattle, arriving at about 2:30 in the morning).
After 2 days of in-bounds skiing, we did a tour on the 18th off from Blackcomb to the Spearhead Glacier area. Even with the high freezing levels the pow was preserved well on the alpine northern aspects!

I'd defenetly appreciate some new ideas; I don't suppose you would want to sponsor me as well? ;)
Boot, email me with a formal, professionally written complaint about the road and how you think we could better handle the situation.
The short answer is DOT plows the road in preparation for spring opening.

glad you enjoyed the pics. No "winged" descents due to the fact I was there for "work."
But here's one from yesterday, sorry no skis.

A friend had tipped me off when it went - spectacular. I remember standing on the rim looking down and hearing the ominous rumbling and watching the belching, accrid smoke drift off into space wondering if we would have time to flee if it decided to go. Looks like our anxiety was well founded. Only Villarica was more active when we visited.
What's next for you, Dan? Should I send you on assignment on something I want to ski in the future?

Skierlyles, I assume that was you with Double_E. I recognized him as we parked in the morning, but didn't get a chance to say hello. Sounds like you guys had a fun day of your own.

Where is the slot/crooked?
Hope you figgered out the serious answer: Mt. Snoqualmie. Both are in Volken's guide, and there are TRs on them here. Not exactly a secret stash. :)
Thanks for the kind words, everyone.
Sure, the other side is skiable, in fact the old ski tracks from the previous day went that way. The spot where the river exits the glacier terminus (which is often a hazardous, steep-walled icy pit that yo...

Question? You mention decending skiers right of terminus. Is the left or east side of terminus still doable as well?

alexf- those look like some really awesome descents up off Snoqualmie Mtn- I have been meaning to get out there and actually ski those beautiful Couloirs. I have been up and around that area several times and always drooled over those shots. Way to go get em'!
also, that last picture at Paradise parking lot is exactly where my car was parked an hour before that picture. I was parked next to that van in the pic- guess I just missed you guys. We toured Birthday/ Mazama bowl and ha...

Wow, I have been dreaming of skiing in Japan and so it is nice to see your report! I've been hearing that Japan really has big snow packs, long runs, heaps of powder and tons of side/backcountry. Your pictures suggest this is true not to mention extremely alpine/ beautiful situation....... Looking for to your future tr's.....
Sure was crowded up there. The seracs and, what appeared to be, medium-sized cat prints, kept us company.
MW888888888- looks like Llamia's top pitch may have gone the way of the wind.
- Nice moonlight tr by the way, sounds like snow conditions and stability are improveing out there.

Hey Amar, thanks for the trip report and photos. It was my mom and I who came down through the rock band above you, she was visiting from NY and it was her first turns of the winter. The snow was great and seemed stable despite the late hour. We actually got a ride back to paradise with Julie, who apparently had a ski fall off her car. Not sure if she ever found it though.
Nice pics Stefan. It's good to see that you are fitting a little skiing into your schedule.
I was truthfully hoping to see a winged descent.

you stole our pow! Bums... We went up monday and the slot was pretty icy up top, with really hard wind packed snow down lower. Awesome pics tho, glad you guys had better turns than we did.
Hi Steve, I was wondering when you guys were going to Japan. Looks like good winter for skiing. That little shrine on a peak is so classic Japanese, those things are everywhere!
Keep posting, I may be skiing there someday.

Great ski, Dan. Misery hill doesn't change whether it's February or July - some of the worst "skiing" on a volcano, right behind the top pitch of Llaima, Chile.
Wow nice pictures. I'm glad you all found good conditions up there.
Welcome to the group. It is great to see adventures to new places. I remember hauling my ski gear to Japan for a business meeting, ;), after my company was purchased by a Japanese firm. I really enjoyed the photos and links.
I don't know Amar, that rendezvous sounds fateful to me.
Great report and photos as always!

Yeah! Thanks for the report.
Thanks for the photos. I have been wondering about the Mountians down there:)
Saw your tracks (barely) yesterday in the Slot. Hard to believe they were only from two days before. Had a great tour booting up the Phantom in the early AM on well frozen steps and then skiing the soft pack and spindrift powder in the Slot. Skinning back up to the ridge was easy going and it was a couple of inches of creamed corn on top for the trip back down the Phantom. Got the waterfall for the first time (instead of cutting into the trees) to finish it off.
You forgot to mention the push up to Squammish and the lovely night's rest behind the Save-on-Foods. Dump trucks and bums made pretty good alarm clocks.
Or what about the hitch hiking between parking lots and forgotten gear? All and all, a gear cluster f---. Bring chains, and wires, and pins to this place, I'm beginning to think that these glaciers eats shoes and boards... not to mention sick couloirs and U shaped canyons.
