Bummer, Andy,
Sounds like by passing up north facing Mazama bowl that alpymarr and gang partied on and skipping the reefer you may have missed pretty much all the skiable snow on the mountain. Hope you at least got back to your car by 1:00 ;)

Yeah, I don't know; that N face was pretty heavily skied and areas that were nice on Fri were all breakable crust an...
Everyone was ok but it was a wake up call how easily these can happen.

Avalanche.ca had the area as Considerable from alpine down.
We were skinning a 20 deg slope and had planned to dig a pit when it got steeper.
The avalanche propagated uphill to the weak point on the steeper convex slope 20-30m above.
Winds were strong overnight from several dierection but snowfall was light.  There was however a lot of transported snow which obviously formed the slab layer.

Good to hear everyone is ok!
Thanks everyone for the kind responses.  Funny that my first TR is about skijoring...
Here's one more pic, from Day 1.

For those interested, the Mail Run website (see link at bottom of report) now has photos up, follow the obvious links and click 2009 Mail Run.

Cheers,
Mark
Definitely a good use of after work time of a short Friday in the office.  I do have some pics, and will get them up soon (comp has crapped out, and roomates only has linux).
I was on Herman 2 weeks ago and we dug a R-block on one of the warmer days of the inversion.  It was rock stable, even though we could detect the 2 foot layer of snow that fell on the old rain crust, it would budge with some jumping like a banshee on the Rutschblock.

We did see a wet slough at 11:45 AM on the way up to the saddle coming from high up on the S. face of Mt. Herman but it was not propigating at all - came off of a fairly high angle rocky face.

That deep layer i...
Glad you are okay!
You look to happy for a guy who was just in a slide,it must be a face of releif!
In ice hockey I was always taught to have a game face on for the camera, even if I was happy!Ha Ha!
Live to ski anouther day!

Huh!, we skied it Friday and it was heavy and wet! did a a tour from Paradise-4th Crossing-Vantrump Monument, Pardise River, Golden Gate, to Paradise: all ice or breakable crust!

Hey, samoon, we haven't met, but I believe you were trying to get in touch with our club regarding a reservation at the Wendy Thompson Hut.

Thanks for passing on the info regarding your near miss to the folks at the Escape Route. Next time, it might be an idea to give your full name before you head in. Then, if there is an incident, it might be possible to contact next of kin, etc.  Search and Rescue commonly contact us regarding who has reservations at the hut when folks g...
So cool. Bear would be a apt name for the (I'm guessing) darker dog on the right?

Awesome!
Looking good folks!  Hope to see you soon...  8)
Here's some shots of Bonnie and Jeanette raiding the 'fridge ;)

A few more shots HERE.

Also, as others have noted elsewhere, new...
Great TR!  That was a very enjoyable read.  I passed through Quesnel as a teenager moving from Alaska to Seattle.  It is a very beautiful part of the world and glad you got to enjoy it.
Here are a couple thumbnails. that's me dropping some mini cornices, and paul ripping skins on top of the same knob. more pics here: http://picasaweb.google.com/Graham.Parrington/SuperMazamaBowlSunday?feat=directlink

Skied the Tatoosh yesterday Feb1 near  north face of Foss Peak. Ice Glaze, breakable crust and some windblown.
You could get a few decent turns in if you followed the trail of pine needles down the bowl which seemed to show where the windblown was. Narada Face actually skied OK yesterday if your standards are low like mine are at the moment.
beautiful! thanks for the pictures.
a wonderful way to avoid the superbowl! pictures are on the way. a note on safety: as we were leaving, the wind deposits, which were stacking up fairly rapidly, were starting to get slabbier, so watch out for slabs, especialliy on NE aspects, and even in areas that may have been previously ski stabilized - skin tracks were disappearing as fast as we were lapping them...
Might of seen you guys yesterday...glad you got some goods!  Trees seemed to be the word of the day...
Leave it to you and Ron to know the best snack bars in town. Let me know of your next mellow tour, cause I think I'm almost up and running again--well not literally running--but just about upgraded to freestyle mobilization.  :) Hope to see you sooon!
really not a lot of details to be found. Crust over 10" of dense, strong slab over 1/2" to an inch of very weak sugary, sitting on top of very thick crust, which I didn't spend much time trying to break through.
Nice job for a short day.    :)
Wow, you got some nice pics on that trip!  I like the one of Dan looking towards Chinook/Sourdough.
Nice job on the first Slot report of the season (I think?)
I was wondering when we would get one of those reports, but I never thought it would be in this drought. Very nice indeed!!!
Revisited the area Sunday on skinny skis (circa 2000, REI rental leftovers) via Rockdale Canyon.  Thanks for the great boot-track...at a certain point it got to be too much for the fishscales and I just hiked.  Great view from the knob in the upper basin.  "Virtual edge" (ugly) skiing back down to upper Ollalie road.  The 0-2 inches powder was totally wind- and therefore aspect-dependent.  Finished with a circle up Hidden Valley and back to the bottom of the ne...
I think you deserve some kind of courage award... pack your crampons and ice axe.  We need a couple of real big dumps.
Shred, it was good to meet you in there, too.
We didn't go back up. Looked like too much work  with no track set yet. We did debate dropping down to Yodelin for hitchhiking and decided nobody would pick us up ;)  so kept on the trail and met a couple others who came down from above on that side.
really enjoyed your trip report.  a guy i know in alaska has done 300 miles in two weeks.. but not sure how many dogs
That is really awesome!  Thanks for the report.  -20 is about my limit.  I'm glad they let you use metal edges.
Pretty decent day yesterday.  Here's some photos before the clouds rolled in during the afternoon.
This celebrates 10 years of the evening view from Sasse Ridge. John, if you want to get in on the snow camping anniversary there is still time to order those primaloft pants!

Hey Don B.
It was nice to meet some more fellow TAYrs, I presume that you guys did not head up for another run, as on our 2nd trip down did not show any evidence of an up track out. We followed your tracks out to the PCT, and jumped ship at Yodelin for the easy sleeze hitch hike back. Joe and Holly showed up just as we were pulling out ( covered in sweat ), so we were compelled to offer up some of our beer bounty for their efforts.
Brenda and Jeanette's drive and determination is duly noted!  Any more details about your quick pit would be appreciated.  Drinks are on me the next time we ski.
Stability concerns?

going up the phantom we avoided as much as possible open / loaded terrain, using mini ridges and other features for traveling.  evidence of wind loading definitely from 4-12" in places, crust under this, bonding to crust was good though.  we experienced no whumphing or shooting cracks.  in the slot our concerns were heightened.  upper section had about a 6" slab that came off clean between turns.  we as much as was allowed by the...
Thanks for the reply. Yes if you shopped around you could find blown in powder. Picture above 3-4" in that little swale.

Anita, Phillip and myself were there as well. kinda crowded compared to normal. We wern't expecting much but were pleasantly suprised. Yes it was variable but no death crust. best skiing we had was in the trees leaving the bowls. How was the coverage in the trees east of Nordic pass? We skied in and out via the north part of the Catherine loop.

Two of us skinned to Skyline Lk and the ridge above to NW at 5200 ft, then skied down the NE trending valley beyond, down to the PCT at ~3800 ft el, and traversed around on the PCT route for a long slog back to the ski area. Snowed all day, not too hard. Lots of variety in snow. Similar findings. Seemed to be about 2" of fresh moderately dense powder on light crust or on 5-6 inch denser older powder on the S-SW faces and sometimes pretty hollow below the crust but we had no areas cracking o...

Stability concerns?

Interesting - we were nearby as well; biggest settlements I heard/felt were in fairly open W facing areas between 3.5 and 4.5k. They rarely spanned more than shoulder width and ski length.  On sheltered windward slopes above 5k, I found mostly blown-in and wind-arranged powder that, while barely bonded to the crust below, didn't...
Fogle!  Welcome to the site and thanks for the pics.  Lets get out again with Woody soon.

J
Stability concerns?

We were just east of you and turned around at 5200 ft, strong swirling winds moving lots of snow around.  Settlements, 5-10 ft cracks when breaking trail through wind slabs, a few compression tests failing on zero or 1 tap.  You get the idea.  This was on predominantly NW facing terrain.  We turned tail and ran!

Oh, sorry, got off in gear-head mode.

Larry

You?  Getting off in a gear-head mode?
Awesome alpenglow, by the way.  Have to camp to get that view!
J (smiley face)

it did not suck

thanks everyone for a great morning tour  !
Thanks Larry -- love the gear-geek notes, as usual.

But this year particularly, I'm finding that getting those perfect turns in perfect conditions is not as important as it had been. Just being there seems to be enough for me now. I suppose personal losses have a way of making you realize what's really important.

This is really what it's about.  Glad you're out there enjoying yourself.
Yep. You're right. That picture is pretty sweet. Fun day out!
Nice work finding some goods in the less than desirable conditions!

nicely done!   how'd the crooked couloir exit look?  curious if its filled in enough to not need a rope thru the narrow bit at the end.

crooked exit looked real slim Jason said after having looked up it, phantom had softened up nicely by the time we came down

John, woody, eric & jake :: sorry these are slow in arriving.  skiing was great compared to our current
state
Pretty nice. Good to hear the Alps are getting good snow this year.

Only in skiing though are pictures of rappelling considered extreme.
