And what is the penalty? Is the fine a big enough deterant?
Can you elaborate on what they got busted for??
Yeeaaaa.....
If it makes you guys feel better..... these sled necks got busted big time yesterday at Schreiber Meadows. So.......there is some law enforement presence........it's just not as good as Mr. Jack!

Hands down, Young's Double Chocolate Stout. It's a great breakfast beer.

It may be hard for some of us to feel your frustration with the helicopter operation and their tracking of the goods because you sledded in and were merely deploying your variation of their game. Getting the goods is not easy but using machines to get you in is kind of a cop out. How long would it have taken a fit person to ski up the road? Oh, nordic skiing is so yesterday...
Isn't it illegal or immoral. or somthin' to do the birthday tour in January???
Just curious, does Bitburger come in a can? Nice call on the Old Chub! And sweet turns you guys, awesome trip!
Stugie,
Schu and I were up there same day. I'll put up some pics for you tonight.
Ruth was bony up high and most interesting all N and NW facing slopes looked totally wind scoured and cleaned of snow, whereas S/SE was well covered even after all these days of steady sun. Guess the last storms blew in from the NW. Second pic shows Berkeley area.
Bob,
How are those blisters coming? First pic shows St Elmo's Pass if you didn...

Coverage on Ruth, if I was looking at the right mountain, seemed a anemic for this time of year. Some rocks/cliffs were showing through on the Northern aspect. I don't know what Berkeley Park is, sorry.
Nice effort though, that's a haul. What's the coverage on Ruth look like? Berkeley Park?

Forest Service law enforcement is a joke. The USFS probably doesn't even have a person and/or will to enforce the Wilderness Area boundaries. There were fresh snowmobile tracks up there last May.
Maybe they should transfer some of those gung-ho guys from the border crossings to wilderness protection. ;)
Well, as gear discussions go, we must also cover the brewskies in all fairness. Anyone got a favorite that needs to come with on a trip? I'm a Guiness fan, on tap or the can, so that's my go, but we got Old Chub and I know a few people that like to summit with a can of Rainier...
"Forest Service law enforcement is a joke. "
It seems that Forest Service law enforcement is HIGHLY SELECTIVE. No Forest Park Pass? They'll ticket you in a hurry.

Great TR dberdinka, thanks! The photo is perfect for seeing the landslide you reconned.

Great shot of tracks making advantage of side loading in gulleys! Way to ferret out the snow !
Hey Silas - how about a thanks to the NWAC for making data available in the first place!!! :D Your chum, Garth
Big effort Bob,
That is a phenomenal amount of skating.

;D true enough. it must be god's plan to put so much snow in such a flat area. maybe THAT's why i'm agnostic... ;)
Whohoo! Thanks for the vertigo...I kept trying to straighten the camera until I fell out of my chair. ;D Maybe if I wtch it with my skis on. Great run! Lookes like beautiful country.
Nice! Good job, Chris & company. Man, the blue skies! This inversion layer is at least good for that, eh? Great pictures, dudes.
Thanks for the feedback. Take off eh, you hoser.
I love the fact that the bivy photo has become so humorous and the origin of gear discussion. We put the photo in the mix as a joke...."haha look at Graham 10 mins after waking up with that sh*teating grin drinking instant brick joe" Even before we hiked up the cooly. It was almost more fun camping than skiing....almost.
I actually like the shorter shovel, and the only thing I can think might have influenced it is our short little scoop shovel I had back in the midwest. Had to shovel two to four driveways everytime it snowed.
Having been up there in winter last year, thanks to sleds, I can feel the frustration of tracked out BC after walking uphill for hours.
In terms of sympathy, admittedly, there are shades of gray. For me, and the Jan 18 posse, the sled replaced the car, sled never left snow covered pavement. Not some stunt of snowmobiles going up hill in "ski terrain" like you see in the movies.

I also did Granite, on Saturday (1/17). Corn was just on the firm side of right at noon. Started from not quite the top but also went down gut of gully and made the effort to run down the lower gully for as long as possible. Along the way, inspired by the two fearless snowboarders who I happened to be just behind (but not so inspired that I repeated the giganto cojones straightlines over 3 foot wide collapsing 45* snowbridges that they did), worked my way past at least two waterfalls before givi...

Yeah, I was a wee bit worried when I hadn't heard from them.
Now, I'm jealous.
Well done guys, getting the birthday tour is soooo cool.
Itchy, I'm so proud of you and well done Jay and Sam!
Thanks papa bear- always good to get some affirmation of a job well done.
We sure did have a great time -and what a great place to be...

Anyone have a fav Beartooth tour?
thanks marcus! if only they would design the deploy with another handle length inside to give it that crucial extra 8 inches or so... after losing a shovel handle during a powder day at crystal, i was adamant about buying a shovel that stayed in one piece! now i'm ambivalent...
Nice work guys...
I ditched the Deploy because it's so short -- I figured in serious winter snow-camp building, or digging someone out of a burial, the extra length would be more efficient. Couldn't find the Transfer, so I got a Life-Link. The BD shovel design is pretty slick though.

Good getting guys. Papa Bear called me early Monday AM wondering if I had heard from you. He was worried; how cute is that?

nice work I'm glad NCHS didn't track the area to bad.
If you own a pass to any ski resort in Washington you get a industry discount of only 700$ a day.

I am glad that you found favorable snow conditions, it seems like it could have gone either way for you up there this weekend.
Good pics Jay and Chris. Where are Sam's? Did he do his famous cornice drop trick? Did you consider lining up at the landing area with the heli skiers for a lap or two? It mighta worked.

Not as bad as Yeti shit. That can really slow you down.
Good job making the best of the conditions Jayme.

is dear shit bad for skins? anyone?
Grandparents have a pad in Red Lodge. they'd drive me up and watch through binoculars.
Cool Jayme, nice tr! Where were you staying in MT? Great pics too!
That is a fun trip on a spectacular day like yours.
I heard that if you contact Northwest Heliski and find out where they will be flying that day you can avoid their commotion.
I've also heard, without certainty, that they will do their best to avoid overlapping your tour if they know ahead of time where and when you are going to be at a location.
Or for about $1000 bucks you can ski until your group tires or money runs out, several exposures in the North Cascades...

Great report, thanks -- I love seeing the less-visited places. There's so much out there in the Cascades that just doesn't get touched.
Very nice report, and great to hear that you could reasonably navigate through the slide paths! Sure looks bony! What about 1st or 2nd Bowls on the North Side of Washington's peak? Are slide paths beyond the hair pin negotiable?
Cool.
Cool.

Snowmobilers come in via Canyon Creek on the backside of Church Mtn followed by the entire length of Excelsior Ridge. I believe the wilderness boundary is near Excelsior Pass waaaay over at the west side of the ridge.
Wow, that's pretty deep into the Wilderness. Good to know.
J
Great snow quality (considering the state of things), good times, and awesome views made for an outstanding outing altogether. This truly is one of the most beautiful places in the world.

you think like us, stugie! we were worried that amar and dave (we knew they had to be TAY-ers...) were going to ski the finger first (not that it matters much in corn...), but they were going all the way to the summit. tho' the wind-packed powder on the upper nisqually looked pretty nice as well...you know, i'm not sure if i like the BD deploy or the transfer better... alpymarr's got the transfer and the extra length is crucial when you're digging out a bivy hole after skinni...
I wish we had brought some Gordons mystery ale, also an OB brew. IMO its the best weight/effect ratio available for backcountry happy hours, although its like $4 each. That and about 6in of fresh would have made the run unbeatable. Stoked to hike up that mother again sometime...all the way. Oh well, the corn was a callin'.
That looks like some good conditions under bluebird, Awesome!
