Thanks for the report, was that release on the first big roll over skiers left?
That is a fun one, but man the exit looks horrible. Thanks for the report, just in time for my day off.
We did it from Commonwealth but but I have gone up from Alpental and skied the south side of Mt Snoqualmie down to Cave Ride then made my way over to Gyue Peak down the Couloir and out Commonwealth. Then either walk or thumb a ride back to Aplental.
Beautiful Couloir pics! Did you get the ridge from the Alpental or Commonwealth side? Thanks.
Most of the blues are pretty unexciting terrain-wise. They get amazing dry inter-continental snow but in general there isn't anything steep. The one exception is the Elkhorn Range, the area around Anthony Lakes ski area. I's a little blob of granite and it has everything you'd expect of a granitic mountain range, including a couple 40ish degree couloirs.
The Wallowa's are a seperate range from the blues, and a little farther from western Oregon/Washington, but the...

Good call. That chute looks awesome, but that snow looks Skkkkketchy!
Good to see there's some snow out there, good report. It would be nice for more folks in the Portland area to post observations so we could get a feel for the snowpack before heading out. Glad you got out of the slide OK, thanks for the info.
FYI, I skied Sierra at Tahoe, (South Lake) on the 9th. On the NE protected areas I hit it felt like about 18" of very nice light snow on an old crust. The lightly skied runs had minimal scrap off down to the old firm crust. It was amazingly great skiing. What a concept; POWDER!. I did remain spooked all day at the low base, ~3-4', and all the snaglly dead fall and slightly covered boulders in the woods. If they've gotten more snow since the 9th...
Pic two looks like a real fun line. Thanks for the TR.
It was a fun day. Thanks for going. I should say last section is not skiable. After the hourglass S-turn you will need to bail out to skiers left. I found out the hard way ;D
me too. We need to head out east more.
thanks for the sites. Weather is looking good. It appears that you guys have been getting a good amount of snow up in the highlands. Looking forward to getting some turns. Hitting Mt Rose for BC then on to Donner pass area for more BC. Looking forward to visiting the area harvesting some freshies for all I am worth.
I've always been curious about the blues. What kind of terrain is out there.
There is always something to be found at the NWS - most other organizations build their offerings on top of or in conjunction with NOAA. Here's the link to their western observations page. http://www.wrh.noaa.gov/mesowest/index.php?wfo=rev The Snotel stations are most relevant to skiiers I suppose. There are a couple of dozen telemetry sites there. Haven't decided which ones relate to prime fly fishing, though. I sympathize with the other cur...
yeah, www.sierraavalanchecenter.org has good reports for the Tahoe area. There's also www.esavalanche.org that covers the areas down near mammoth. For snow data you can check out the central sierra snow lab at http://research.chance.berkeley.edu/cssl/ For Yosemite just check the national parks website. The yosemite site updates sporadically in the winter.
Hopefully the storms we're getting down here this week dump a few feet because we sure could use it. Just a little over...

Bummer -- ah well. Come back and start a new thread Lee!
Looks like Lee put TAY on ignore after he was doused with haterade and his photos got moderated. Fair enough though, he was breaking the rules. For those who want to see more, he posted more pictures on TGR.
Great stuff -- I love reading the TRs that mix up the usual stuff. Throwing a rope and a few shenanigans in for some spice every once in a while is good.
Thanks Stugi! -Two of the three pictures were taken by Mike. It was a very good day, but I’m itching to get back up there and ski some of the many fine lines in that bowl!
As for the rope- There was plenty of excitement for me and I did not lead a single pitch!- the exposure on that climb is by no means insignificant.

Thanks Joe...any interest in Jim Hill Mt. this weekend? If the snow starts flying, I'm ready to start calling in sick.
Wait a minute -- if the snow actually starts flying, doesn't that make it BETTER to be at your job?
Happy Birthday Brad!

Happy Birthday tele wunderkid!
Keep me in mind, I would like to get out with you guys again soon.

Dammit Lee, where's today's report?? Don't go all lazy on us.
Hey Altahoe, glad to see you're getting out and tearing it up. Sorry I didn't get your message, my phone sucks. Hope to reconnect again sometime soon. Peace.
Ditto as per the other messages of support Lee, and glad to see you are pushing the boundaries on the photo limit on this site. No need to start that discussion again( but what the hell!), 3 photos ain't enough and the rules need to be changed! WORD!!!
Personally, I enjoy seeing somebody else catching flak for a few loose words written in glee on the interwebz. So here's some empathy from me. Thanks for being the whipping boy!
Glad you're having a good time out there, Lee. I have to visit Parc National des Glaciers myself one of these days.

"We're here, you're not." >:(. Just kidding ;). As usual Lee, great tr and great pics. Thanks for pumping some good stoke. Hope to ski with you sometime.
Bob, great pics! Way to bring in the ropes, add the real mountaineering aspect to it! Sounds like a good trip.
I thought the TR title was funny and of course the content was awesome.
Lee, please keep it up. I really appreciate the conditions reports and the stoke.
Dear Skier-X and Alpymarr
the "we're here, you're not" was meant to be a joke to friends who should be skiing but are instead stuck in the prairies.
Sorry you are all butthurt about it.

Good info, thanks. I'll look it up before our '10 trip. Do you have that same weekend for next year?

Nice work y'all. And thanks for the picture of the north face of Alta -- I tried to head in that direction on Sunday, but didn't make it a quarter of the way.
thanks everyone

i was hoping someone was playing around up Gold Creek on Saturday....Alaska and Chikamin were on my mind, but opted for the low hanging fruit of a nisqually chutes ski instead. Looks like y'all had great conditions! nicely done :)

Lee's trip reports are incredibly inspirational and have done me a lot of good, especially when I was far away from mountains or during lengthy periods of homesickness and related depression.
My ability to publish trip reports is very limited for a variety of reasons but, like Lee, I do try and make a contribution to this community.
Lee contributes a lot of valuable photographs, route information, snowpack information, and generally is one of the bright lights of the...

Nice pics Lee and thanks for the updates. Don't feed the troll.
I skinned out to Great Scott bowl Sunday afternoon, happy to find softening snow conditions (… finally after skiing there last couple times on boiler plate or ice). Terrain at skiers left of main drainage was in great shape, temps helped to soften up the wind crust, some good turns. Higher up in the bowl, some loose snow in areas over firm base but soft enough to hold a good ski edge (maybe newly tuned edges made a difference this time). Temps in the low 40s. Some exposed...
Hey, I was there too. We were the couple in Larkspur. My wife made the Mac n Cheese.
We ended up connecting wind protected patches over by Wedding Pt on down to Midway (with wind assisted traverse in in between) on Sat, followed by snowmobile shenanigans with the boys.
Skied all the way out on Sunday by staying along the ridge from the top of Wild Bill, foolishly scraping down Sideburn and then pushing our way along Coulter Creek back to the lot. Coulter Creek was filled...

I could finish by describing in detail the demoralizing beatdown dished up by Gold Creek on the way out, but I won't. Children might be reading. All I'll say is that it takes about the same amount of time to go in as it does to come out. By the time the three of us reached the car darkness had long since fallen. You've all been warned. Sweet! Looks like a great ski, I've wanted to do that ever since I looked up Gold Creek Drainage from I-90.
hey skimtner & Robyn,
Thanks for the Avi link Robyn.
Do you guys know of any telemetry / snowfall data resources for (any part of) the Sierras? I'm heading into Ostrander in Yosemite and my main resource has been Badger Pass and Sierra Summit websites.
Looked on TTips and did some Googling but couldn't find anything.
Thanks.
