I don't remember seeing that crown on 4/13.

wasn't there on 4/15

Thanks for the report, link, and photo!

Looks to be sun softened wind slab. Usually remains cohesive in the early hours retaining structure from overnight freeze (hence previous skier tracks), but then looses that structure and becomes volatile with softening by the sun and/or air temps.
Like you said most likely formed from the mid week snowfall (and wind) we had recently.

In your photo there are several visual cues of wind drifted snow formations... but I get it, I&#...

There is a 2.5-3 foot crown immediately at the exit of couloir, extending from wall to wall, that may have slid earlier this week.

I don't remember seeing that crown on 4/13. Visibility was poor but there definitely wasn't a mandatory jump.
Lovely photo #2. Good to know you're out there amigo.
Dude, it sounds like a battle out there. However if you don't go, you don't know! Or in this case we now all know because you did go.
Thanks for the excellent report.
Wow, that is spooky.  From your description and picture, I know the exact spot.  Even with its gentle convexity and shallow spots there, I'm sure I wouldn't have seen that one coming in the conditions.  Did you dig a profile to look at the new/old interface there?  Glad you two are ok - thanks a ton for the info!
Thanks for your trip report. Out of curiosity, did Slot also have a 3 foot crown extending from wall to wall at the lower exit (mandatory jump) last weekend?

It's been pretty much the same throughout the Eastern Sierras Bridgeport to Lone pine. STELLER! If I could figure out how to post pictures from my phone I would but it's too much for my little brain to figure out.

On my phone from the send screen, I slide right all the way to “Copy I Cloud Link”. Wait for that to happen and then paste it into the b...
Thanks for report! Best Mountain Weathet Range in the world! Some say.

Yahoo, Snoholic! Go get 'em. Post your follow-up. Love to see wher you've been...

I've got a few pix, but they're apparently too big to be posted. And I'm not tech-savvy enough to compress or whatever I need to.
Nice Greg, I'm following your footsteps. It's definitely big line time here now!!!
Sounds really great...thanks for posting...that's big county with lots of choices so I hear..way to tap it!!  Any photos ?

Very cool!!!  Thanks for posting..looking forward to more..
Awesome..... I climbed and skied Mt Fuji a way back with my brother Andy a ways back. So good. Have a great trip. Enjoy.

Thanks for sharing Andy. What a journey. Some great snow on the back side of biggie. Amazing snow quality. But a trickier snowpack to deal with. Thanks for the vid.
A live person at the VC said that the phone system was down yesterday too  ???
Nice to read your TR of your recent visit. It brings back memories of skiing Jakes Peak, Crater Crest and Power Plant Bowl back when Jill and I were a bit younger. ;)
Traveling the japan trains with skis and backpacks is more of a crux than most folks realize.

Chu-Hi and rice with salmon.  Yum.
Guys that picked me up, the SUPER BUSY Yokohama train station, and selfie showing the set up that I had to move around the trains.  It was not convenient, but ended up not being too problematic.
route was near the looker's left skyline.
I hope you can share some pics! I spent a month there in the winter treking around in the 80s and wish I could have skied the summit of Hart Mountain! Wild country with no cattle allowed to graze!
Soak and ski. Sounds great!
"Forceful Steering..." LOL, that sounds brutal!
Thanks for the report, Kenji. I enjoy your photos.
For future guidebook authors it also goes by the Dave summers pinner chute.
Boy you guys sure get after it! Thanks for the great report.
Hit this same line today. A fair amount of postholing from mile 3 to 4 (intermittent deep snow). Was able to skin the last 1.5 miles. 7 hours round trip

Had great views on the way out. Ski'd down in a cloud. Snow was surprisingly fun/slushy. I'll try and get a full TR up with pics this weekend. In my opinion this route will not be worth the effort in a week or so due to melt. Good times
Thanks for your trip reports ..hope to get some from your adventures in japan

The couloir is on the Arm below Point 6146. The skier's left wall is overhung and water was dripping onto the couloir forming a layer of water ice. We suspected that there was another layer of water ice underneath the most recent snow from the mid March warmup. Great looking line, but clearly not in good condition. It was an easy decision to pass on it and avoid having to climb out of the...

We dropped in (marked by the blue dot) just shy of the west summit:

Since we didn't get up high enough, we never had a view of Townsend. I bet it would be great skiing though, if it still holds enough snow. From what we saw out there, SSE slopes were still holding snow but due South and SSW slopes had mostly melted out. A few degrees of angle towards solar input definitely makes a big difference this time of year.<...
Amazing streak(s) Andy! Way to go
Thank you for the trip report + pics. Hoping to hit the same line next weekend
Nice one.  That line is listed as an ascent route for Iron Mountain in the Olympics climbing guide, but without snow it's all scree.
Did you summit either Buckhorn or Iron?
And did you get a look at Mount Townsend?  The SE slopes of that are good in the spring too.  I skied off the summit a few years ago by doing the kick-and glide across the summit grass for a bit....
Thanks for setting that booter! I was surprised to see that there had been enough wind transport on the WSG to cover the skin track and booter from the weekend. We were glad to see you coming out of the NF! Sounded like you had a good time. I bet that corn at the bottom was perfect.

Adding some photos from Dave.
Hey!
I was the one on the NF

Saw you guys poking around the top of the NE coulie! Glad to hear it was a good time!
Strong freakin legs! I could see from the bottom that that coulie you checked out goes!

Probably the Crawshaw couloir?  Do you see it here?

Some ski photos:
1. Dave skiing the steep pitch on the Hanging Glacier above the NWC entrance. Pretty firm snow here.
2. Traversing into the NWC.
3. Looking down the top of the NWC. Nice wind-buffed powder here. My favorite part of the run.

We then skinned halfway up WSG and traversed the Arm scouting a wicked looking couloir, but couldn't quite green light the descent from above (I'm sure Lane will add a specific pic) - wondering if anyones knows about this option?

Probably the Crawshaw couloir?  Do you see it
Thanks for posting -looks very nice.  Need to get over there sometime soon.  cheers.
I can not imagine taking an extra lap towards the end of an 8.5k' day! You're a machine. Good luck in Japan, and thanks for all your posts here.

Nice to run into you! We (group of three) enjoyed a nice morning corn run on the slopes from the ridge that accesses the NF then headed up the White Salmon and enjoyed some suprinsingly good steep pow turns for the upper 2/3rds. Watch out on the early morning desents into the W/S drainage very hard to get an edge on the open slopes, the woods proved much better.

Nice, that looks fun. It also looks like you put in some grindage on your boot soles  ;D

Thanks! There is easy access to the S side of Bryant from Pineapple Basin via a thin couloir E of the summit. It's heavily corniced in the winter but would make a fun ski in the spring. We skied from the summit down the SW ridge and then traversed to Melakwa Lake. Started skiing at about 10:15am and it was still firm, but this could be a great little corn run if timed correctly. I think it's a worthwhile variation if doing the circumnavigation CW in the spring.
