When I did that route many years ago there was a flagged climber's trail of sorts tunneling through the slide alder on the left side which we found with luck. Still a lot of shwacking with skis. We thought we saw a better way down on climber's right so skied some nice patches down to within a few hundred feet of the valley bottom, but then had to do some sketchy down climbing that was too dangerous. No easy route that I know of, but a gorgeous place you will likely have to yours...
The only time I have had success on Whitehorse, we went up a side gulley (climbers right) near the bottom of snow gulch that was filled with avy debris and managed to traverse back to the main basin higher up. Total fluke that we found something that worked. Man what a great ski it was. Been dreaming of a repeat ever since.
Yes! I am clearly not familiar with Hood, but I was definitely talking about skiing West Crater Rim along the bench out to the top of Castle Crags, then dropping off the bench down to Zig Zag Glacier. From what I have read online (now that I know the name), there does not appear to be a lurking fumarole between the southwest corner of the bench and the Zig Zag Glacier.

Thank you!
OK thanks for the heads up!  I haven't heard from anyone yet, but now that you say it was picked up I'll call the WA parks and rec folks back to see if someone dropped it off with them.
shit... wish i would have looked here last night.

I saw this pole and whippet in the lot this morning, right around the corner (south) from the pit toilets, eh?

it wasn't there when I got back.. I had assumed it was someones from the morning (it was a total zoo).

Hope it has gotten back to you.
Are you talking about West Crater Rim?  I'm not entirely clear where your asking about.
Awesome!  Well if you do see them can you just grab them and take them home with you?  I'll pay you to ship them back to Portland.  Or, if the ranger station is open you could leave them there, I've got a call in to them but they aren't open on weekends.  The poles were left on the southern part of the loop, near the toilet.

Thanks!!  Have fun, should be great skiing.
Thanks for the beta! I'm headed down there now and will keep my eyes peeled. Unfortunately I'll be driving back north though, so if I spot them I'll try and figure something out.
Great trip report and photos. They bring back memories of my trips in the area. ;)
An amazing physical feat.  My congrats to Sean!
Looks like you got it pretty good. Big streak for you this year!

A fantastic TR. I've been thinking about doing this route and appreciate all the detail to know it's in right now.

Thanks, just keep in mind that this was before it got really warm. I wouldn't count on finding similar conditions.

Max, this is Anthony the guy that dropped in just before you.  I'm really sorry to hear you broke your ski just as you got into the Slot.  I would have stopped to ski with you had I known and not been chasing my friends below.  Hopefully you've got a backup setup so you can keep skiing this spring.  I'll send you a PM with my email address.  I'd love to see the photos you got!
No kidding! We got out of there early afternoon just as the NW face started to get some sun and there was plenty of activity from the previous day to show the potential. I'd be surprised if there isn't a major cycle coming into the valley off the unsupported slabs on the NW face soon, it seems like more of a question of when then if. More details posted here: https://www.nwac.us/observations/pk/4163/
Nice!  I checked out the Straight glacier from above back in January, I wondered what it would be like to keep skiing it down to the valley bottom.  The low elevation snowpack was in even worse shape then so it surely wouldn't have been pleasant.

I bet that NW face is starting to get some sun these days...wouldn't want to be under that in the afternoon!
Thank you for the tip Obi Wan, and have a fine trip south - presumably for that southern corn?
A few more shots, we were in the shadows, seems like that's where all the fun is! While Mike caught me smiling it was more like a suppressed whine. It was at my limit for exposure! Mike made it look easy.

It was a great route, and it seems more fun in my mind the more I think about it. Yes, we followed the road for a bit then dove into the park once we found a good looking opening. And we did ski the road from Wheeler down, which was pretty humorous/terrifying as a snowboarder on a splitboard in ski mode with free heels on the icy/refrozen snowshoe and snowmobile track! I probably would have felt better skinning it with long controlled glides ;-)

Nice job on the Squilchuck couloir! Th...
Theilsen looks great with her winter coat! Good job, Oregon represent!
Driving down from M.R. saw numerous tracks in the hilltops between Mission and Squilchuck and a set (2) above and east of the park. It's clear that conditions are alllowing some lines to be skiied that rarely see anything remotely close to ski's. Good on ya, way to tap some great local lines!
The story makes the photos so fantastic.😊
Wow!  Congratulations on nailing a bucket list item, glad to hear it was so rewarding!
Awesome!!! Jtack and I skied in Squilchuck State Park today and I think we saw your tracks diving off the road in the park. Definitely at least one snowboard. Pretty fun loop,eh? We for sure saw your tracks on the Wheeler plateau. You didn't skin down the road, but skied it. We skinned downhill. I think your way was better.
After reading your TR I sent it to Thad, who had been skirting toward the Stemilt basin, and we decided to tackle it on the 14th before things deteriorated too far. It wasn't hard to convince a couple other friends making it the perfect foursome, two splitboarders and two skiers.

Due to a forgotten parking pass we got a later start than anticipated and with a hard return-to-work- time were only able to get one lap in the upper basin. Had we know what lay ahead we would have opte...
Another great line in the bag! Looks perfect, thanks for the post.

Thanks all! Still much prefer this site over the Face Book thing, for useful info. Keep it coming. :)

Me too.
Looks like a sweet trip fellas! Nice vid to boot. Those are some characteristically compact ripper ES turns.

From someone who doesn't see FB, thanks for posting here.

In that vein, if not too much to ask, please post overview pic and/or ID info here too.  I wonder if this is one of the lines i gaped at with ES on another trip to that magical land.
Lots of people post skiing videos, many are interesting, but few rise to the level of ski porn. Nicely done.
Anybody doing that in  day gets my vote!  Its still a great effort because its far in there!
Up in Chelan sightseeing today, there are some fine looking lines here as as well!
Thanks all! Still much prefer this site over the Face Book thing, for useful info. Keep it coming. :)
Lowell, I posted a photo on your FB comment.  ;)
This is the north couloir of Wilmans Peak, correct? The one that ascends to the summit plateau of the peak. Not the couloir that climbs up between east and west Wilmans Spires. Just checking.
Hurray! I've been watching Birch Mountain but haven't gotten out there. Glad you got some. Looks like fun!

This has been "the season" for skiing the Wenatchee Foothills". ;)
That was rad! Thanks for posting that up.
This is awesome Jeff and Erik and nice job as i love that line when it's filled in!! The music choice for your fabulous video was perfect.
Everybody, right there is what we all need a whole lot more of. Thanks so much for the great line, and the great video. Whooo Hoo!!!
Too much fun!  Been up there climbing in summer - looks like a hoot.  Ripping it at the bottom - luv it!  Fun video - thanks.
Great work, both skiing and some of your best POV yet - esp. following Eric. I also liked the fall!
An amazing amount of fun having. Kudos!
That was fun to watch from beginning to end. Thanks for the vid!
Wow! I'm lucky to have a day with you kids from time to time. And the older we get the more true is “Today is my best ski day ever.”
