I am not French.
I was asked if I was Scottish yesterday. Was asked if I was Gavein K-H.
Maybe the guy had seen me ski?
Nah.....
...saw you make those nice turns down Sahale. Looked like a lot of fun and great snow. We found some good turns ourselves over on Pelton Peak, which was one heck of a consolation prize given the sliddy snow.
Nice job with the pics Jay, that first one is a real gem. Despite the snow conditions being marginal and there being a bit of hiking involved the day was a splendid one. Great views abounded and we were rewarded with a new area to add to the growing list of Teanaway favorites.
As soon as my camera stops acting up I will post some pics too.

Looks beautiful! Skiing glop is still preferable to hiking in my opinion. It's all just a means of getting outside.
ridngoofy: We saw you bootpacking the Roman Wall. We were the group of five skiers behind you.
You did not miss too much. The skiing on Roman Wall was not that great, bands of soft fresh and old frozen snow.

Stoked: we took the Grouse Creek route. Had to bushwhack the first 300 meters from the parking lot. The snow is melting fast, the approach might be gone for the season. See the pictures in the above...

We were going to do the PG, but sastrugi snow guarded the entrance for what looked like a long way. I'm sure it was good lower, but we did not want to lose vert on marginal snow when such goods were on the snowfield.
Thanks for that decision. The sastrugi were there but wimpy. The snow on the glacier was untracked and phenomenal until we got to the b...

Is that Scottsman with the new Dalbello Virus boots? How'd they ski?
They ski and skin just fine and despite the constant sarcastic remarks about their color from my partners, I like them more than any other AT boot I have owned.
They have improved my downhill performance from "bloody gaper" to just "gaper"!
Joe, I would prefer the notation to read KermittheScot please as I am not French.
I thought I cut a rather stunning figure in my Sounders green shirt and boots!!
And why do you keep taking photos of my ass!
My wide-assed skis as Joe likes to call them handled the corn and the slush with equal aplomb despite their drivers meager skiing skills.
Helicopters overhead most of the day.. hope they find the missing climber. On a sunny day such as yesterday the mountain fe...

Happy Birthday Marcus! And thanks for the Silver beta, looks like still enough snow on the west slope for a ski down toward Annette. Now if this rain here in Roslyn would just stop with enough time to get up there today. We had it in mind and time is running out!
Looks like below 6000 feet we may actually have some firm corn finally!

Nice TR. I love Zig Zag!. I see you skied way down low. Just curious as to your route back. Was it just a slop up the steep canyon wall?
Thanks!
Ah, Muir is a tad further but I may reconsider
Cheers

A great day Silas, thanks for the cupcakes!!
Joe,
Beautiful photos ! The snow surface looked fantastic. The pleasures of skiing smooth corn with and inch of cream allowing you rebound turn after turn as you descend a steep fall line. Yahooooo ! It feels so good - it must be illegal. ;)

Hi Zap,
What would you recommend @ Alpental for best experience tomorrow?
I mean runs and skiing time window
Thank you!
Ivo
Timing really depends on the overnight temperatures. I found the front side runs receive less direct sun exposure so the snow stays firmer longer. With the snow surface being slightly suncupped, I find th...
Let's see (iPhone quality ::) ):
1. Right when I made the ridge
2. See the road / parking lot below?
3. Notice slushie on viewer left (one of many many - but most were below)

Nice skiing with you, John. Eager to ski more gems of the Teannaway.
Likewise Andy. You going to make it out this weekend?
J
Pls give our regards to Jill and wish her a speedy and uneventful convalescence! Andy & Regine
nice .. too bad about turning back .. thx for the beta .. o happy b-day .. and your pix are cool
Hey! That was me, the boy and the grand daughter. Nice to see a TAY'er as living 2000+ miles east I don't get the chance that often. I was out there teaching my son how to guage my endurance and ability relative to his - he still has a way to go. Also had the nephew from Boston on his first Cascade back country outing
Nice skiing with you, John. Eager to ski more gems of the Teannaway.
I'm waiting for Alisa's pictures too :'(
I don't post here often lets see if I can add some
View of Helen Lake Camp on 5/29/2010

Alisa, Nice TR. OK, where are the photos ? I'm pleased to hear about the snow pack at Bunny Flats. Years ago, Brent Hostetler and I did a Memorial Day ski/climb of Shasta. We camped at Lake Helen and it was amazing the number of tents. When we departed in the morning for the climb, I was shocked when I looked down at Tent City at Lake Helen. Not a wilderness experience but an enjoyable outing. And it was SUNNY. ;)
Kurt took some good pics of the tent city at Helen Lake, it was huge!
There were a ton of people up there but not as many as Muir two weeks ago.

Nice work. I've been on Shasta twice...no summit. There are other good ski routes on the peak as things get too hot and melty on the avalanche gulch route. Can't remember the names, but they are around to the E and N sides. They are WAY less crowded. Sounds almost as crowded as Tuckerman Ravine up there!

The snow pack looks healthy. What were the elevations where you started skinning and top ?
Hey Zap,
Ski area base is 900 meters. The snowline is just below 1100 meters on Collins run, the approach. As soon as the run turns a corner away from facing south the snow depth goes to around 2 meters (6 feet). Probably on the summit it's 3 to 4 meters. T...
Awesome Alisa and Kurt! Sounds like a funtastic time!
I went looking for Mark in the teneaway and built a giant igloo on longs pass.

John, fun hanging out with you guys for a few stormy minutes on the Navaho summit. Fun skiing on the SW ridge. We'll do MD/Brenda's loop tour another year.
Hey, looks like the Flyers are trying to make a series of it. ;)

Unless they get a lot of rain you should be OK. The shasta forest office will be able to tell you how much snow is as bunny flats before you decide to make the trip. There might be a better trail head to start from later in the month too.
The forest ranger and a guide from mammoth lakes both said that ussually there is not enough snow to skin up Misery Hill.
If you get early start you should be able to do the whole thing from Horse Camp with out the overnight at Lake Hele...

Nice work getting through the winds and summiting! I'm glad to know that there is plenty of snow down there; should still be good at the end of the month, eh?
Good one..
I was happy to ski some june turns yeasterday on Seymour.....

I tried that link the first time, which is what gave me problems. Marcus's technique worked fine and pretty straightforward.
It wasn't our first choice, but ended up being a cool thing to do. I'd never skied in Cali before.
We got lucky at Diamond Peak. Went in Saturday afternoon in cloudless skies, and skied it Sunday in beautiful weather. Did not start raining until we got back to Eugene. FYI, Diamond is in as good a shape as I've seen it at this time of year -- LOTS of above treeline snow and steep lines are in that are normally rocky and not skiable. Continuous skinning from Corrigan Lake (we were able to drive within an 1/8th of a mile of the trailhead). We were able to skin...
Beautiful trip! I was thinking of heading that way this weekend, but another set of plans is getting cancelled due to weather...

yeah it was winter above 5k. I wish the conditions had warranted at least an exploration day, but it was pretty sketchy.
We hit broken snow at 4400', and started skinning at ~4500' in 3' of snow. The snowline is so abrupt this year, it's really fantastic for not having to fight patches for long!

What elevation did you hit snow/ put on skis?
Wow, still looks pretty wintery up there!
Hey ridngoofy,
You approached from Glacier Creek Road? Did you head up Grouse Creek route or stick to the trail? And where is the snowline? This weekend doesn't look so great but you never know!

Nice Alisa! I didn't know y'all were heading down there. Sounds like you had good conditions.
