That looks like a great ski guys. Good work on waiting out the clouds. It seems to usually work the opposite way for me. I climb up to the top of the line in clear skies and the clouds set in while I prepare to drop.... maybe I need to climb faster ;)
Thanks for sharing your photos Sam. It's nice to have some famous internet skiers around to show us the best lines.

Great TR and photos. I was bummed yesterday when I learned about the opening on the 25th seeing we were near Paradise on the 24th. It's very sunny near The Sisters in OR. ;)
Stokes - 2lbs lighter than Kailas with skins, hmmmm. You are now the "official traibreaker". ;D

Glad to hear you had a pleasant tour around Pinnacle. On the 24th when I climbed Castle, I was originally planning to orbit Pinnacle and ski the same route you skied. I found the south slope snow quite unconsolidated on the 24th and decided to traverse to Foss and descend down Sunbeam Creek. Jill was waiting for me at Reflection Lakes and I knew that she knew the better choice on the 24th was the traverse. :)
Yes good tour to test out my new Stoke skis, boot liners and Frankentongue design. Awesome skis and great turners. But the Scot keeps saying their to short for me because he knows I like to sell off my fat skis. They weigh less about 2lbs less than my Kailas skis with skins on!
Anyhow great day, on the tour back we were able to hide out in the trees to keep out of the heat-lots of snow. Be kind as to watch not to tromp where flowers are starting penetrate the winters icy cover. Also watch o...

Hey Keith. That was me and my son out there. Your yodeling was awesome! It came out of no where and capped off the day. We were on our way over to Peak 6567 and it skied really well on the North side; no sun cups and firm. I can't yodel, but I clapped madly hoping for an encore. You probably couldn't hear me. Well done, the yodeling and the skiing! Thanks for the pics. It was a beautiful day.
Bandwith nazi is going to get you. ;)

Thanks for the report! Have a trip planned for this weekend, so this really helps. :)
Oh man, I was feeling so over skiing before this trip; it was exactly what I needed to fix my attitude. Thanks for a great day, Amar.
That's a great trip.
I'll bet you enticed your non-skiing ski buddy to move the rig and pick you up at the sunbeam creek pullout, you sly dog.
It's always fun to find new lines and you can't know too many :)
Have a fantastic trip south with your ski buddy and here's to her rapid return to the snow.

Pictures looked great, I like the chute ;D
For some reason the vids are not working for me on my Mac ???
Hope we can hook up before it's gone.

Hey, thanks for the TR. Off to get some turns in that basin tomorrow AM.
I love that view and that haaaaa! feeling when you drop out of the trees and turn the corner into the basin. The McCall beckons you with that huge bitch-slap "Here I am, come and get me" attitude.

Thanks for the report. great images!
Thanks for the info and pics, we did a week backpacking there last Fall and planned to get in there to ski this spring. Doesn't look the same with all the snow, and to think we were desperate for water, gets pretty dry around there.
Good to see you out! Was wondering when I might see your Chinook posts again.
I've pretty much gotten up into the goat rocks every year for the past 15 or so. Not this year. That's why this TR is especially nice. Thanks for sharing! (OMG, there is a TON of snow).
Not sure about Snowgrass, we considered it as well. The issue is that the road spends a lot of time above 4000' on the way the to TH and it only takes a shady corner to screw you.
If you do make it in, here's what it looked like the other day...
Goat Lake is in the upper right of the first shot, the second is the Flats and lower valley.

Nothing at all fail or "attempt" about that, looks like a success any way I look at it! Great pictures in on your web page of the ice fall collapses too. I love Drew's hat in that one picture - is that what I am missing to take it to the pro level? ;)
Thanks for the TR. Do you happen to know if you can get to the Snowgrass Flats trailhead?
Looks like you guys did the Headwall adjacent to the Roman Nose. Here is the link to Jason's photos. I figured that's what got Drew's attention.

Pleasure skiing with you, Sam. What a killer first outing together!
I was talking to Sky and he said he, Jason, and Ben skied the couloir under the seracs in 2003.
Looking forward to more!
Oh and Lisa's making me blush.
Likewise, I had a lot of fun, thanks for the phone call.

Nice ski!! Just saw Jason Hummels photos of the same line he and the Traslin brothers just did.

Way to get after the good weather (finally), and bag a sick line!
Hey gravyb, That was Dave P and I drinking the best ski beer in the world up on the ridge. Nice eye ;) We saw you go down from the saddle and followed your route later in the evening. We had a fantastic ski most of the way down to Lake Annette until the snow pretty much ran out. We skinned and scrambled up to the actual summit, which amazingly we skied from literally 10 feet below, then skied the East chute back into bowl.

looks like a lot of fun to be had on old snowy!
I would not put off any trips up here because of the snow. The unconsolidated layer is not that deep, just not optimal for skiing. Rich booted up a 40 deg slope (when he realized leaving his skins above) without sinking very much, maybe only 8". The slope up onto the 1st Burroughs was actually firm with 2" soft on top, which would have been good for a quick run. The lower slopes didn't seem too bad either.
Red is the descent line. The hourglass chute is probably going to melt out in the middle real soon and make for a fun moat jump with a very fast landing. I am sure Jason Hummel can get a photo of someone doing that?
I only booted about 20% of the hike, and of that only half of that was in the trees and road. It was quite firm and icy @ 5 a.m., so skinning was difficult up the 2 last slopes before the "skiers" summit.

Thx for the TR.
Is red or yellow the descent route? I've only been in the east or west bowls when there for skiing.
Did you boot or skin? What percentage if both. Thx.

Looks great, thanks for the report! We're making a run that way this weekend, keeping fingers crossed for weather.
How was stability/snow conditions, anything to add?
Everything was pretty stable where I traveled. I did see some large slides and point releases on other aspects, but they could be old.

The snow is still unconsolidated, but the coverage is great.
Thanks for the report. We were thinking about hiking up there this weekend, but I think we'll give it a little more time.
Damn that some nice turn farming on the upper right part of the prow.
Thanks for the report.
Sunrise will be goooood when it opens.

I'm heading to chinook right now and will be keeping a sharp eye out for cornices.
Thanks for the kind words, Joe.
It's nice to know that at least one of the most experienced of the survivors on the forum confirms some of my simplistic logic. :)
The comments about cornices and Snow Sense are both great additions.
Thanks.

Thanks for the report and the info. Interesting about the massive crown on the west crater shoulder....
Yes. That is the car we drove. You could even get by with a regular FWD sedan as long as it isn't too low slung. The road to Morrison was actually in pretty good shape. Don't even remember many potholes.
You got your Father's Day gift Silas ! Oyvind
Well documented dissertation Ron, lots of good info there that reads pretty similar to my way of thinking. So either we are both way off or on the right track.
I would offer that the cornices at this time of year can be of concern, especially the hanging ones. Some of the ridgeline ones have settled back, but still keep a wary eye.
Good read is the book

Nice report and good work tagging the summit. Coverage looks amazing -can't still believe how much snow is still up there. Should still be good well into July! I'm hoping our second baby gets here soon so I can get out of the house in a few weeks and get some quality July turns.
