Pictures from our trip.
Hey Joe,

Been too busy to put up TR's, but thought people waiting/hoping for Sunrise to open would like to see what things were looking like.  Did do another big trip from Cayuse over Governors to Tamanos on one of the few warm sunny days in mid May.  A great trip to keep in mind for early Cayuse opening with good snowpack.

No recent avies on Fremont; were you referring to the old NW swath that I ascended and rode?  Did see one slab on Burroughs t...

I only got 1/2 way up Pan Point before I booted, but the rest of the trip was great skinning. The last 500' was a little challenging, but I get lazy at altitude.

I also discovered that my f'in ski crampons got bent somehow. They would not fit over my skis even though I have used them a dozen times or so - must have gotten bent somehow. I spent awhile trying to bend them b...
Awesome to hear! And agree with the lessons :)

Side note: yes, snowboarding can be much easier and quicker to learn, especially to the level to enjoy black diamonds; this doesn't meant that it's less fun. For me, at the right conditions, it can be better than skiing. Of course, I'd try to get my kids to do both - ski and ride.

Cheers
Ivo
Vinegar.

Gently dab on with cotton balls or even better use a small spray bottle.

Best sunburn cure evar.
I also got the worst sunburn ever on my neck. Sunscreen on in the lot when I had my zip t on, then as I was getting heat stroke I just had a crew t shirt on.

Holy hell am I in pain. Aloe vera neck from hell!
Yes, about 2 miles to dirty yet continuous snow.

As you know, the trail is a nice wide mega-highway, so the hike in and out doesn't involve any fighting deadfall or ducking through brush, so while annoying, it's not too bad.  It looked like they had already got in there with chainsaws.

I'm still, as the kids say, "stoked" on this day!

Someone slide down pan point on...

That would be fat-ass skis.
Remember we discussed as we approached Pan that since your skis are so wide that if you put wall to wall carpet and a specially designed heel lift blocks to extend your heel lift capacity you could walk straight up Pan. Problem solved.

I was scared that dressed in my vomit green shirt and boots that if I fell I would look like a...
We also boot packed up pan point, but it was a slush fest by the time we got there. 11ish? There was a lot of people hiking up with alpine gear, but most of the people on AT gear were skinning. Got the worst sun burn of my life on my face!
Oyvind, Monika and Dave - GREAT skiing with you guys as usual!  I'll post more pics tonight.
Nice trip. We saw you traversing the Deming earlier in the day. The new snow sure got gloppy lower down later in the day!! And icy up top. For all you "greenies" out there, snowmobiling is coming to an end. It could be closed by the FS this week. Now, you will just have to share the mtn. with the HUGE #'s of clueless people with expedition size packs attending instructional groups.
Assorted friends, relatives, TAYers and European guests are joining forces with the intent of climbing Baker from this side next weekend. We will have a number of difficult decisions to make because of the uncertain weather and stability conditions. Thanks for the most recent route conditions.

Snowboards were never an option in my household, so twenty years ago my son learned to tele on basically parallel X-C skis (telemark skis hadn't evolved much at that point and there certainly wasn't any kid-sized gear). At 31 he took up snowboarding on his local boring ski hill (MT.SEYMOUR) last winter while his boarding friend learns how to telemark.Guess which one is easier.
Nice work Oyvind, way to take advantage of the weather.
Way to keep up the motivation. This has been a tough month for weather.
I admit to bootpacking up Pan Point with skis on pack and skins on. :-[
Snowbell and Joedabaker skinned up but for me with really fat skis and no crampons, I find it takes less energy to bootpack  that bit when its frozen hard which it was at that time.
I saw one guy tring to skin  up it take a 100' slide in front of the crowds  so I was happy with my decision. ;D
Great day. Glad you got some.
great score guys!!

And yeah, that road is pretty brutal. it gets my truck turned sideways at times.

Nice boys. Exactly how long was the hike?

the hike is easy, it's the potholed road until a ways past Bean Crk that is the killer. It gets worse every year.
Thanks for the report.
That was on our radar that day too. So about a 2 mile carry before continuous snow?
It's a little more work, but good for you guys enjoying the solid-dude.
Nice -- I've got to get over there with you some time.  We had a great day on Silver for a mellow sickness-recovery/birthday tour.
Fun day!  John's approach (which I had previously spied on the map and intended to explore someday) is a more aesthetic ascent line than De Roux Creek.  Nice way to start the morning.  Thanks for showing us the way, John.

FTR, Anita and I skied the SW flank of Hi E for c. 900 feet, then did a sweeping oblique traverse staying above Gallagher Head Lake, then skied down (on the jeep road for a bit) towards SF Fortune Cr.  Very fun skiing on the SW flank of Hi E.  I set off one mini...

Joe, I would prefer the notation to read KermittheScot please as I am not French.
I thought I cut a rather stunning figure in my Sounders green shirt and boots!!
And why do you keep taking photos of my ass!

My wide-assed skis as Joe likes to call them handled the corn and the slush with equal aplomb despite their drivers meager skiing skills.

I love the "name that mountain" photo.
Thanks.
What do you know, I was just thinking yesterday that I have not read of any interesting adventures from Boot.
This approach to Mt Freakmont had been on my mind, but three weeks ago there was still snow down by Huckleberry.
Good job! Looked like a sizable slide up there in your 1st picture of Freemont. That's quite a walk to get there. You must have put on some mileage.
Glad to hear it Rusty!  Your boy must be genetically predisposed to be a world class telemarker.  You cant let him waste such a gift on snowboarding!

It's a religion not a turn. :)

Ahh ha, because as a turn it doesn't make any sense but as a religion it doesn't have to.
Brilliant!  :D
Great pictures Jay.  I like the third one with the tree especially.
That 4:50 ferry proved to be too early for me.  I would have liked to join you and Itchy but I had to settle for some slightly perfect conditions closer to home.   ;)
It sure does look good!  Nice trip y'all. Hope to be joining you in the not too distant future....
Looks like a festive day out.

It was still quite fun up there today - we managed to mostly dodge the raindrops, and the snow nevery got very mushy - just nice true corn, and never grabby. There was just enough in the way of dents left from your bootpacking yesterday so that climbing the west slope today was pretty casual, though long, and that's good!!
Wow. It looks good up there! Nice fun for sure.

Superior day with questionable company.  ;)

A superior day to be sure but I found the company to be fine...of course I am referring to the lovely lady that I had the pleasure of sharing a portion of the climb with.  ::) (Hi C)

Quite a contrast of tone on the south slopes of Rainier that day.  I learned of the slide and missing climber upon cresting Pan Poin...
Nice job on hitting the corn guys!

Chris
Md2020-
Yeah, was nice to see you two too. Sorry you guys did not have the usual dry Teanaway weather Sunday.

It was nice meeting you guys by the crater.  I wouldn't have gotten the motivation to ski Sherman if I hadn't seen you guys charge up there.

My wife Randi got to enjoy Baker on her third ever touring day.  What a treat to ski back to the car after an amazing weather day.  There is still very little crevasse danger on the Easton and Squak from what we observed.  Considering the unfortuante events at Rainier on the same morning, we saw no slide activity ex...
Nice !

Had a memorable memorial day with my son at stevens last week.  Keep up the good work!

Oyvind
We had about 2 miles and 1,000 ft before hitting solid snow.
keep up the good work Rusty. You gotta make believers out of them early. It's a religion not a turn. :)

Ran into md2020, who was camping up by Fortune Peak.  He showed us an alternative to the summer hiking trail by continuing up towards Fortune Peak Pass before turning off to the right (thanks mad dog, let us know how your trip was).

Good to see you two. We kind of screwed up putting our skins on so soon, as we always seem to do. We lost a bit of time screwing around, bu...

Our apologies to Mike and Brenda for doing so much damage to the slope.  We knew not what we do.

no probem John. We truly appreciate good slope testers. Gotta tell you though, the rivers that started running down that face had us a bit freaked out. We ended up skiing into the east bowl a bit then climbing to the lower entrance to the southeast face. We only a...
My partner and I skied that S bowl on Fortune about an hour after you, sending more hissers. I surprised that the untouched snow skied as well as it did. Gotta love fat skis. Fantastic terrain up there, and plenty of snow.
Magic Peak was our goal. Since conditions were not optimal, we decided to try a different aspect. We were actually ahead of you, but decided to climb up above mixup arm to get extra turns down to the road on our way back to our cars.
So Jason, I guess those were your shoes left on Cascade RR?

How late did you come out? Saw some slides coming off the Triplets/Magic. Obviously you managed it well.
Nice boys. Exactly how long was the hike?

I was asked if I was Scottish yesterday. Was asked if I was Gavein K-H.

Maybe the guy had seen me ski?

Nah.....

WOW ,being asked if you were Gavin K-H quite an accolade!
Your performance on snow reaching great heights!
Thanks runningclouds. We were just up there yesterday and took the Heliotrope trail. I agree, Grouse Creek was melted out.
Nick, Nice TR and photos.  You young guys certainly have the stamina to hike those long distances.  I must admit that skiing at Alpental recently has required a short hike.   ;)
Thanks for the fun day and the cupcakes.  Here is the birthday boy with the birthday cupcakes.
