Round about 3 o clock today, with the sun still shining outside, I felt a strong wave of Shitty Weekend Forecast Flu come on. The nearest treatment center was 45 minutes east on I90 ...
Original intention was just to go to Alpental but I thought hell, bet that rain over last few days has melted out the road access a bit, and kept going to Hyak and 9070. Road is in fair shape, potholed, but no significant new winter/spring damage like there has been last couple years. There was one snowpatch to punch and then not far beyond a no-go stopping point less than 1/4 mile from Windy Pass.
Continuous snow all through Windy Acres. In the NE basin, there was some really curious old av debris piled up, pretty high, more stuff than you'd think that little basin could spit out. Went to the usual high point on the ridge to N of summit, W of basin. Generally pretty good corn snow! Lapped top 400' a few times. The best surface seemed to be some of the slopes that had slid at some time in the past (not THAT recently). Below the basin on way back to Windy Acres, snow was a little more dirty and sticky but still acceptable.
Saw one other group up there, three generations worth of skiers with the little one in a backpack, that's pretty cool.
There's always a satisfaction in ending a tour, getting in the car, and having the rain only hit the windshield once you are driving home.

Hey! That was me, the boy and the grand daughter. Nice to see a TAY'er as living 2000+ miles east I don't get the chance that often. I was out there teaching my son how to guage my endurance and ability relative to his - he still has a way to go. Also had the nephew from Boston on his first Cascade back country outing
