Didn't top out. Got to a notch above Crescent Lake. The visibility wasn't that great and we got a late start. Plus, it was pretty damn deep in spots so trailbreaking was a bitch. We used a snowmo to go up Smith Brook and over Rainy Pass, then approached from the north. If I did it again, I would use the summer trail, up Snowy Creek.
Sorry, none of the photos were particularly interesting from a TR perspective... just pretty. Thanks for doing the writeup!

Tough to succeed when the pup is wearing the cone of shame... :D
poor poor Nellie...cone kept getting filled with snow.

Very bad protocol.
You should have dug a pit upon leaving the car and before embarking thus determining the snowpack depth and consistency. ;)
Anyway..... I admire a good honest fail and the sharing thereof.
no matter Scotsman...I did a ski cut with my car and nothing moved. :)
Thanks for sharing the avy and location. Great photos

Nice tour, we wished more time to actually ski.
That kind of sums up my own sentiments for that general tour. One of these days I have to go make camp out around Ptarmigan Ridge to have more time to explore and cycle out thattaway - I think the most we've ever mustered was maybe 2-3 1K+ laps partway out to the Pinnacle. On a looong day with LOTS of trailbreaking.
Nice pictures, Matt.

I was going to ask how The Swath is looking. but it sounds like vis was limited across the highway.
Hey Joe, we skied the swath on New Years Eve. There was a couple of feet of snow at the parking area but that didn't translate a lot more snow up high, it needed a couple of more feet to get the lower switch-backs along the road filled in better. It was one o...
the 2nd photo gives it better scale than the 1st. That looks scary
Great pictures, Franklin! Looks like it's almost time to update your photo editing to 2011, lol! What was your website again?

Impressive slab failure. Looks like caused by a drop from the top.

Thanks for the skin track!
Al and I ran into your track after a run though the fog on the SE shoulder of the Hill. Breakable crust made for some challenging turns. I cartwheeled at least two times on the lower end. Another 5 inches of fluff would have been perfect! We were wondering about those tracks on the SW. The mystery has been solved :)

Very cool to have skiers in the foreground instead of just the videographer's fists and tips, not that we would have seen your tips this day. Thanks!
Exactly.... The "chase" scenes really work as a POV . Makes me want to get one.
11 days and counting.

Sam, the 'city of subdued excitement" thing is creepy and reeks of neurotic behavior and weirdly suppressed competitive impulses. I live here and it gives me the willies.
Stay true to your Northeastern roots, have more fun than the rest and be supremely cheerful as seems to be your normal MO.

It was too cold to take many pictures, but here's one of Zach in a west facing slot between the trees at about 3,000'. Yesterday's ego snow has deteriorated to just excellent snow (in places). Nice navigation, Silas.
Only when we were in the trees.
Well, crust kissing only happened to us down lower on Commonweatlh basin west facing . We found some stellar tree skiing Northwest of Kendall lakes. Not anywhere as bad as reported on Saturday.

I've always eyed those avi chutes on Goat Island... Anyone hit that in Winter?
???
There is a video in the text above referencing us riding those avi chutes.
I have ridden the Interglacier more times then I can count and always imagined what it would be like in winter conditions. After years of failed plans and putting that tour on the back...

Nice Silas -- were you still touching down on the rain crust?
We felt the crust only when we were in steep trees.
Holy crap. Thanks for posting Jeff!
Sweet Lord Jesus wow!
I love you Jeff Ward.... and all at NCH!
I need another sedative and stat after watching that!

I started up around 2 p.m. We saw no one on our way up. Resorted it most of the day because the kids were racing. Then got away for some touring in the afternoon. I am always reminded how much the gloss has worn off from resort skiing when I tour.
Thanks for shooting that bakershredda. We had a great day up there, wondering if anyone would notice us from baker.
I have a few shots from the day, none of the skiing though, that's all video. I should have that all edited up in a day or two. The trip was basically perfect, everything worked out superbly. Chimneyboy even grabbed the camera for the last run and got a shot of me. From perfect snow, to perfect weather, to a wild cat sighting, and even the lack of a road approach.....

Used a tiny pocket dig camera for the stills and video -holding in my hand. At one point I dropped the camera while skiing and caught it in mid air. I just ski and try aiming at the subject -old school. No holders, no helmet cam... This weekend tried holding camer in vare hand... all I got was frozen fingers, but didn't drop teh camera (till later, and found it three hours later : ). Then used Windows movie Maker Live for the video. I have Adobe Premier, but wa...
We went up via the logging road network on the south end of Rampart, then through the steep trees to the top.
The top 6" was probably the quickest to move, especially on the lower angle stuff -- we got some sluffs down to the crust on steep slopes (35+).

Did you head up the summer roads or just up the forest west of Rocky?
It seemed like a good day for Margaret, but opted for a creek walk to Catherine instead. We weren't getting more than the top 6" to sluff, and had ~12" above the rain crust. Did you have dry sluffs down to the rain crust?

Way to go get it! Nason Ridge is sweet. Did you top out on Rock?
Hey! I was up there, too, this weekend. It was crusty in the trees, but at least not breakable. We stumbled around without really finding the goods, but it was our first year there so I guess that's to be expected. Another 4 inches would really freshen things up.
Great hospitality. I'll definitely be back next year.

Same thing for us on Sat at Paradise and Sun in Tatoosh. It's been a great year so far for blue extra. So nice after the last run to the road not having to mess with skins. Not sure why more bc skiers don't use the stuff.

Newton has great terrain to ski but gets skied so much I'm surprised there are not moguls in there some weekends. Looks like you got up early enough for first tracks, nice photos. I didn't get out over the weekend, but your photos make me wish I did, looking forward to next though...

Yeah, that was me, in my new Dynafit TLT5 Mountain TF-X boots :-) and Regine and up above iluca &*scott and closer to P'dise mreid & snowplay ranger Drew (came busting thru the bushes on big fat skis and what looked like F-1s and hurriedly skied up the road without skins [must have mixed grip wax with his glide wax]) to get back to work with the kids. We headed up high till the ceiling dropped, the wind picked up, and the snowfall turned into a blizzard--greater powder, but go...
