Thanks..we spent the whole day on the south slopes dropping towards butler creek. The snow was nice corn back there. An inch or two penatration. The last run in twilight down the north side was actually better than I thought it was going to be. Weakened firnspiegel in the upper bowl and a softened crust down lower. Even the narada slope was fun in the dark. And yes...we arrived to a locked gate at 6:20ish.

I was across the way and caught that sunset as well. Nice ending to a day.
So, what was snow in Tatoosh up to that day, on the northish facings? Crusty? Crust softened by ambient temp despite lack of sun? Or no crust at all?
PS your pictures are much better at capturing that mood. Yours have far better aesthetics in foreground plus yours are from 10 min after w...

Well, zooming in on the photo above, the solid rime ice is as high as the anemometer's rotor:

So even after the rotor melted free enough to start spinning, the ice would still substantially obstruct airflow onto the rotor. It would make sense that the readings might be low until the ice melted away enough for the rotor to get an unobstructed flow of wind.

I do wonder if it is reading low, though, or at least was for that day after freed up. Like I said in my report, I bailed at Pan Point, so wasn't physically at Camp Muir or even on the snowfield. But based on the snow plumes I could see being wind transported off the edges of the snowfield near Moon Rocks, this slice of readings seemed at least 50% low:

Corn in January? That's nuts. It does not look like there is a lot of snow either.
Are you having a low snow year in south Washington?
The south side of St Helens is definitely showing a lot of bare rock, especially along the ridges, quite a lot more than is typical for January. A consequence of recent heavy rainfall and occasional sunshine.

Nice report.
It's actually against the law to fly the American flag at night without it being properly lit.

Here you go.. this was solid stuff, more like milky glass than styrofoam in texture. The vane was still moving, the anemometer is quite immobile.
Looks like the sunshine...
Nice report and photos. Speaking of watching webcams, the NPS air quality webcam looking SW from the ski dorm captured that sunset nicely too, including the sun pillar also seen in your photo:

Thanks for the tour update in the Wasatch.
Glad the return was only a semi epic.

Great news! Congratulations!
I was hoping that the new 100 month skis would have the nano damping materials that you have been working on. Well maybe next 100 edition.

Awesome Kam & Allyson, congratulations!
We ran into you guys descending from the false summit. I was accompanied by my wife and my very tired dog.
You have four days to get Norie out to begin her streak of Turns All Year, get on it!
Best wishes to the whole family, they sure have a nice new nest. :)

Congrats, Kam and Allyson, and welcome to the brave new world!
oldhouseman- i also ventured out sunday on hood with the hopes of a softening forecast, only to find high winds, and bullet proof ice. Needless to say it was a short day. This trip was my reward.
bcglaxer- The trailhead is at a maintained winter snowpark (marble mountain). The road is clear.

Patrick were you the ones Silas and I ran into on the way up or the guys on the other rib on Red? We were a running a bit late this morning. Left the false summit (when silas got puckered on his new set of skiis) at around 2. It was smooth for the board. Silas said it was heavy on the skis. Videos to come.
Did you run into Silas? He stopped by to rub it in on his way to Red this morning...
Outstanding! I definitely need to get down there this season. Can you comment on the road conditions?
We got suckered by the weather forecast on Sunday and ended up turning around at the weather station due to rain. It wasn't raining too bad, but we were there to have fun, and skiing in the rain isn't much fun IMO. The snow wasn't too bad, but it was very firm.
The route you followed down is very nice.

sorry to hear about the flu, maybe something better than corn on the couch
here's another pic (w/o eyes closed!) - red jacket with red mountain

Thanks for that picture at the beacon park Cumulus. You must have had to do some photoshop to make me look that good. Now that the sun an corn is out I'm stuck on the couch with the flu Arggg.
Yes, sorry for your friend's loss.
Do try and make smart choices: My understanding was they had no beacons and traversed under the finger's cliffs so I'm not sure they were aware of the danger they were in.

Well done. If you can't ski pow, you might as well ski corn!
Thanks. A pleasure to read. I'd just gotten into night skiing over the last couple years mostly on full moons. Builds character.

Awesome! Ask and ye shall receive! I am planning to put together a talk on how to use and interpret NWAC weather instrument data for the next NSAS workshop. I have been trying to think of ways to get my hands on photos of why instruments sometimes don't work right. Can I use your photo?
Of course. Consider it in the public domain.

digitally we did uhhh 9.11 miles, or was that 6.99? hardcoded into stats, and hard to say... though we did all agree the announcers voice was hot.
Transceiver Training Park is solar, should be working today, wasn't yesterday - nevertheless the views were fantastic. It's amazing what one can do and still be home by 3:30. Fun day, good to meet you both!
