Great photos, especially the second one. Are the ovals frozen footprints?

Thanks Larry.
Missed your reports!
Me too!
Larry, I especially appreciate when you share your detailed bc snow camping strategies and tactics, like how to stay warm and dry out there...
So have you established homestead rights on Sasse Ridge yet?
@Rusty - I think a great time was had by all. It was about a month since my last tour, so I didnt care much for the skiing, I just wanted to get out. My buddy was blown away by the total experience and will be back for more. I'm down in a company meeting in Vegas with him now and he is talking it up about how he cant wait till the next trip;) Either he has a short memory or the reward is worth the punishment. I agree with you making that transition from groome...
Nice to meet you up there, I was the group of 4 that dug the pits near where the vidy starts....it was classic cascade snow that day, but still made for a fun day out.

Glad you like it, Lisa. I want MORE. Guess I just gotta wait for longer days to be able to pack more into a day.
I forgot to mention lots of avy debris from the last cycle. Piles of snow 15 feet high 100 feet wide at the bottom of major chutes like Liberty.
What the heck, the heli-skinners got all the powder??? Still the views were 100% spectacular. ;D Even though the windpacked snow was on the plus side of marginal, being able to pop around and ski in the North Cascade mountains, landing and flying over knife ridges is unforgettable.
Nice Jeff.
We helied on Sat 1/22 and didn't find quite as good conditons generally although Madison Av and especailly Liberty Bowl skied well.
Cosmic Blast was windpacked hard but still fun.
We had a great time though.

Lately I've been taking some beginning tourers (and sometimes skiers) out. I'm doing my best not to utterly sandbag them, however my success rate is probably only about 50-50.
I think getting people started by taking them out in the spring is the best bet. There aren't many things easier to ski in this world than good corn, and you've got a better chance of decent vis and weather, and you may be able to eliminate avalanche concerns from the equation.

Nice Larry -- that kind of weather had to be rough for staying warm. Got any new systems that you're dialing in this year?
"completely safe" is relative, Tony! I certainly didn't feel safe in that SUV that tried to pass everyone in the on-coming lane...
What a day. The pics do no justice...except the one of your smiling face.

I think one of the toughest things about getting other folks into backcountry skiing (or just cross country skiing in general) is matching the conditions and the terrain to the gear. If the snow is perfect (almost) anyone can do it. If not, it gets really hard. I think Baker is a great area to learn, though. If you get decent snow on a pretty day, then just going up to Artist Point is an easy way to get them exposed to some heavenly stuff. The views are top notch and there is plenty of easy terr...

Nice report, that's a long hike up from the HRM lot, glad you found some corn snow for your ride down. Great pictures, always enjoy seeing photos from some of my favorite tours on weekends I can't get out.
GPS said: 4+ miles to get up there, 7.6 miles round trip, 3400 vertical feet. I am headed to Victor ID to tour the Tetons this Thursday. Jus...
Sunday was different - totally calm at Muir.

Amar,
I can attest that the forecast on Saturday was correct. It was steady at 30mph with gusts to 50+. Still nice to be up there in January...

Thanks for the report, glad you got above the clouds and into the sunshine. How strong were the winds at Camp Muir?
Just wondering if the forecast 30-40 mph winds actually happened, since the wind speed remains frozen on the NWAC telemetry.

Ahhh, good times. It looks like 67% of you enjoyed all of the trip and 33% enjoyed about 33%.
I've been on both ends of that spectrum. ;D I took an accomplished "lift skiing" friend out to Yodelin a few weeks ago, and he was just a sweaty, thrashed mess by the time we got back to the parking lot. Of course he was used to downhill, and I put him on teles. Are there any rules about that? ;) Looks like you gave your buddy a...

Great day to be up there. Here is another video - Peter carving icy turns.

Berthoud Pass rocks. Wish they still had the lifts up there. One of the coolest, and oldest ski areas around.
That's what I'm talking about. Nice!
Awesome. Juya and I followed your tracks down the slot, then climbed back out and skied down snowqualmie. It was nice out...but the snow wasn't that great. Still...a great time in the sun.
I never met him, but I suspect Telemon would be proud ^^^.
Nice to see you change from hater to a lover Sky. Sweet trip- glad you got it. You too NAOMI!!
Peter,
thanks for writing the report.

awesome video. contour looks looks good!
Pretty awesome stuff. That's a lot of radness. You're maximizing your ROI out there with sun and snow like that~!
The puffy is a year old, Amar. But you didn't mention my new boots or sunglasses. Spending too much, dunno my ROI, but to be fair it feels like I'm living like a king. Je me sens comme un ROI chez moi. (That means I feel like a king at home, just so I don't alienate anybody.)
Long live the HannaH! Hope you're enjoying the San Juans.
Thanks for noticing all the elements, Zap. Life is good.

Thanks for noticing all the elements, Zap. Life is good.
The report has some excellent elements:
* A strong adventurous female skiing partner who also takes great photos
* Nice powder terrain
* Aesthetic ascent/descent routes
* A new touring friend from Argentina to visit in the other season
* Your hat and boots match

Thanks! Yeah, I had time for one run from the summit hut. Lots more tele-turns than in the BC! :-)
You're quite a colorful character, Sky:

New pants, new hat, new puffy, new pack, . . . stylin'!

Beautiful photos and sweet terrain! Thanks for sharing the stoke, that couloir is spectacular!! 8)

Sweet! Sounds like a great trip!
Those clever Canadians think of everything.
That's just how we roll up here, Marcus. The mountains have been optimized to put a skin track up one side, then schralp steep powder on the other, then repeat the process ad nauseam. I <3 the Coast Mountains.

That's a sweet feature -- a perfect little skinning spine.
Thanks for a great trip and would love to do it again. Did you grab a ticket and ski some more? Anyways I just finished a couple of runs in bounds and it is hard, so groomers all the way.

Good skiing today above 4-4500 ft in the open, and with a smooth underlying surface (no avi debris) there were nice turns.

Damn right. Good route choice Freebird. Nice to get that line in Jan.

Skiing has been pretty good up at Paradise the last couple days. Dust on smooth crust. The chute was a little variable at the top, but was better as you skied further down. The bridge exit was still in good shape despite all the recent rain.

I would not have had to dig a pit because just by the feel of the tires on the parking lot surface I would have been able to determine depth, consistency, shear value and CT results. Pus I would have done a donut which is the parking lot equivalent of a ski cut. ;)

...good to know. way to take advantage of health and healthy skies!

Good skiing today with anywhere from 1-8" above the rain crust. Dust on crust at pass level but above 4-4500 ft in the open, and with a smooth underlying surface (no avi debris) there were nice turns. Crust ranges from mostly supportive to supportive to very supportive depending on aspect and elevation. New snow bond to the crust isn't that great with easily triggered sluffs...
It is always like this, right?
