awesome video!
curious though, just cuz everything I have ever learned is that you should always ski a slope one at a time in the BC. What information do you have as a guide (who I'm assuming has extensive knowledge of the area and conditions) to allow you to ski in pairs like that? thanks!
Good question. Skiing a slope one at a time is prudent technique i...
We were up there today. Headed lookers left at thumb tack and up basin under east face. Found 4-6" of wind buffed goodness in basin. Minor sluffing and windslab in basin but no propagation. Sun affected snow from basin back to source lake was not great, but better than I would have thought based on the past weeks weather.
Parking lot was good for donuts ::)
fixed the date, apologies, the crust was very hard and very supportive skiiing on it was just like having a groomer under the soft, it made for fun skiing especially in the sunshine.
Thanks for the report. Was the crust breakable or supportive?
And where did you get the time machine? Very cool to be able to experience tomorrow's conditions today! [again wishing for the clown emoticon]

Great vid Jeff!
Skiing one at a time is just to avoid exposing the whole party to a hazard. If the hazard is not present then the buddy system or spacing out on a slope is acceptable. BC travel techniques as Colin Zacharias, the AIARE Technical Director says,
"Where you ski summarizes everything you know about avalanche concern. How you ski reveals your avalanche mitigation plan"

Welcome to TAY Jeff where no good post goes unpunished. ;D

had scotsman dug his pit in the parking lot he would have known just how much the plow was about to spread on top of him.
I would not have had to dig a pit because just by the feel of the tires on the parking lot surface I would have been able to determine depth, consistency, shear value and CT results. Pus I would have done a donut which is the parking lot equival...

I believe this thread should be moved to "lift assisted" skiing.
I guess getting a helicopter drop-off at a yurt could be considered "lift assisted" but all of these turns were "earned" from the bottom of the run with skins.

Plow debris in the parking lot.
What are we looking at, Andy? Slide debris or plow debris?
Storm skied a couple days over xmas down So Cal way. 13.8" of rain in 5 days where I was staying in la-la land. Could be a banner year for Cali.

I was running out of easy home projects.
I read you on that bit. :)
Hopefully some consistent coverage is headed our way. Just in time for your road trip?
attaway, Zap!
Similar conditions at Hyak today, a few big streambed "moats" have opened up mid-run, but skiing was surprisingly good, especially at the top.

I keep reading articles about the extreme avy conditions. Glad to hear it was a safe "roundtrip". ;)

the coverage is excellent down here, so when the real corn season comes, it will be sweeet.
O yeah. 8)
Really loved your town and your mountains. I didn't get a chance to tour while there and only Silver King was open the days I went but the views of Summit looked good. What is the name of the large bowl south of the resort?
Conditions weren't great at Whitewater, but they were good enough to justify spending $20 on the one ride backcountry ticket. Avy forecast was extreme, and a person died in a slide the day before in nearby Kokanee Provincial Park, but we didn't observe any signs of instability. Nonetheless, we stuck to the thick tree lines rather than venturing to any of the more epic decents in the adjacent sidecountry. Even though we didn't get any blower Kootenay powder, we avoided skiing in th...

Nice! Stevens Peak was my first true backcountry ski experience at the ripe young age of 18. I need to go back!!! Looking forward to your posts.
Cool pic, must of been taken from some of the logging areas across the interstate. The little glad in the foreground I believe is called Wayne's world by locals. The pic also shoes some of the great line options o...

Good example of how stability can differ from slope to slope. I likely wouldn't have even dug the second pit, good on ya for even doing that much.
Welcome to the forum, and thanks for the good information.

Thanks for posting more details jrayne. When you say you did a pole pit, are you talking about something besides just sticking your pole into the snow to feel the layers?
Thanks again for posting your findings and lessons learned. Glad you didn't get that layer moving when you skied it.

Funny video. I did a couple trips to Bow, or was it Peto, Hut in the 80s. Back then it was a small Quonset hut. We suffered from bad trip timing. Freezing cold and next to no visibility.

A number of years ago a friend and I spent a few days skiing lines in 5-Mile Basin. Good times! Thanks for the pics.
Jrayne - Thanks for posting what you found.
Also, thanks to the guy that posted the vid. Pretty damn funny, but I think they need to work on the Manitoba accents a bit more. It was good enough to fool the gal at the trailhead. Her tone with them was hilarious. Kinda reminds me of something...

I appreciate the honesty and it begs the obvious question: why didn't you perform a test before skiing the slope?
In the interest of full disclosure, this pit was definitely an afterthought. We actually dug it on the way back up after skiing the run.
Background: Cash was our 2nd run of the day. We had dropped another run outside of the area -- and not in the permanently closed area -- after digging a pole pit and assessing the situation. There was nothing alarming about what we saw or felt. The snowpack proved to be quite solid. Solid would be the operative wor...

Three from the elbow, Koda, so CT13.
This is correct
the Rough Correlations document is appropriately named. 3 elbow "taps" I initially interpreted at the "wrist + elbow" level in the Rough Correlations chart as opposed to a blow from only the elbow... I would not guess to be a "tap"

Three from the elbow, Koda, so CT13. Still a little light for my taste, for such a quick shear, but everyone makes their own risk assessment.
Jrayne, did you guys do any propagation tests? What were you observing during the rest of the tour?

Q1 sheer at 53cm on 3 elbow taps. The block came out like a file drawer! We skied the run without incident, but if it had ripped, it would not have been subtle.
Interesting TR. I'd like to know more about the objective of the trip? ...did they ski out to the hwy, or skin back up? Were there other factors that gave them the green light to ski, or a reason th...
That video reminds me: I've gotta buy another shovel.

Going to play devils advocate here....maybe this will help for those new to the backcountry. What's the point of digging a pit, w/ a result like that, when you're going to ski it anyway? A Q1 shear, 53 cm...that could easily have led to a bad situation. Was the pit really just an after-thought...you were going to ski it regardless? What result (from the pit test) would have been needed to conclude the ski run just wasn't worth it? I know this is a tough/personal question to answer...
Mmmm, that's what we need during the rain. Thanks! Sounds awesome.

The clump of trees just before the east facing slopes of the back bowl; we headed down Mazama Ridge to jump off and make a run down the slopes above the Paradise Valley Road, then back up to eat lunch, and ski the front of Mazama (best powder I've ever seen there).
It was very cold above the back bowl, probably 13-15 F, with a breeze, and my old Marmot 3-layer Goretex parka was barely sufficient:

Pretty woman with a harness?
Zack Griffith has the lovely Molly Baker in his videos and she rips.
Don't you boys have girlfriends???
Think the 2 folks to the right in ... 0258.jpg had the right idea. Spacing is good.
Dropping in off the top of Mazama Face, a couple hundred yards south of where the lower Skyline Trail tops out on Mazama Rridge?
Good one...Thanks for sharing! :)
Glad you liked the slow-mo I'm working on making is much smoother than it is.
Thanks for watching everyone, my jaw dropped today when I saw how many views it had gotten in just the first 3 days.

I don't know, tell your friends to slash harder and jump off stuff? 8) ;)
Oh believe me, Allen was taking every opportunity he had to tell us to rip harder! Problem was, of the 3 runs we had, I botched one by going out of view, then carried the camera on another, so I definitely wasn't gonna push too hard on the top to bottom shot. Sure gave me apprecia...
