How was traversing from the back side of pineapple over to melakwa lake?
Not as fun as coming down from Bryant Peak Col would have been... ;-)
The traverse was fine... Nice turns just off the back of Pineapple, traversed most of the rest of the way with one quick skin to get up over the final ridge before dropping back down to Melakwa.

Thanks for posting this incredible day's journey. Great shot looking down the Biz-Natch! See you soon...
Wow, I made some really sloppy turns! Ha. Anyhow, good film, story and pics guys. Nice to meet you up there.

Very Nice.
PNWBrit( Banned) and I got a few slackcountry runs yesterday as well. Hiked Hemisphere and dropped off backside with nice pow leading to virtual cliff out the Brit skillfully negotiated by traverse through avy debris. Then we skiinned up and dropped Blueberry Chutes. What a day... what views....snow great.

Nice day on the face of Granite Mt. despite weather being quite warm and soggy. Skinning up the SW rib was a workout!

The only thing thing that really sucks is the heli-ski/tourer comingling. Just yesterday I was skinning up a bowl and a chopper landed on the ridge about 200 ft away from me, dumped their clients and shredded the choice line.
I have empathy but it also depends on if you are in the heli or not. Last week we landed at the top of Blue Lake Col just as a group of skinners...
great video .. fun to see hummel on the other side of the camera too ..
Jim, Sorry to hear that you only had 2 days in the alpine with all that fresh powder. I'll bet you had to suffer getting that white stuff flowing over your knees, up onto your waist and then regrettably on your face. Geeeeez, you must have had a terrible time. O yeah, you really missed some great weather and storm cycles here in the PNW while you were gone.
We are jealous but glad you are back to share our misery. See ya Wednesday evening - it should be blower powder. ;)

post a pic of the farmed furrows off facebook :) see you in march
Awesome work! I've wanted to ski that line for years.
I understand the preservation idea in a popular place...but I do not go into the back, or side, country to 'follow rules' or other peoples turn size. I go partly 'cause their ain't nobody tellin' me what to or not to do.
great report .. love the pix .. the axe (or whippet) is a really cool shot .. so is the one where you're almost near the hut .. so are the peak shots .. your american border is awesome .. nice work .. beautiful photography!
jason (ha i see you caught him in action) has posted his stuff on flickr .. i thought it looked crowded in the lookout lol .. anyhow someone of that party will prob be posting a report somewhere ..

The new snow at 5500' was of mashed-potato quality, and generally not bonded well to the underlying crust. The sluffs we did trigger propagated until they reached flatter terrain below. In our case, since we were in the trees on rolling benches, none of these went far or had the chance to get going very fast.
There was a lot of evidence of natural slide activity in the chutes we passed on the way, both older debris and snowballing/pinwheeling of the new snow. L...

Thanks for the TR and beautiful images. Powder and sunshine, hmmmm. We'll be there late February.
Glad you guys enjoyed the TR. Come get some. Farming has its place, and this spot is one of them. The sheer number of people skiing around there warrents its use. A few big gs turns by 10 people would definitly change the appeal of the bowl. I remember talking of spooning turns at Paradise a while back and started a sizeable sheetstorm..Anyways keep on spooning there Joeda or else Scotsman may issue you a citation. ;)

Powder farming is huge and nearly every line is farmed with precision. It makes sense because sometimes there can be weeks between good dumps and people want to leave some for the next day or even week.
See all you nay sayers, I'm not the only one who believes in powder turn preservation. 8)
Thanks for the report, gotta love Utah snow and it&...
Sounds dreamy... thanks for the perspective..Glad you are having fun. Please post regular TR's.
The scene is more open. Tons of folks out in the BC and everyone seems to be nice and willing to answer my noob questions on routes, aspects, etc. Also, most people I see are great skiers. Out in LCC most people are ski bums and live up there and ski everyday and have the general ski in day drink in night attitude. I like that. Whats the scene like down there and how does it differ from the PMW scene?

Nice sunset pics...making me wish I was up there for a visit. Anyone thought of skiing Fuhrer Finger during the nice window going on up there?
Attempted to do just that on 1/27. We experienced 65+MPH sustained winds from the W, gusting higher. The winds had scoured everything down to bulletproof ice on the Wilson Glacier. We wanted to climb the W...

There are actually two locks on there. One with the "code" and the other one looked just like a padlock.
What a nice day it was! We saw some of you on our way out. We hit it early so I could be at work in Seattle by 2, but it was just soft enough to be enjoyable.

That poor road ranger probably had more to do than just lowering the flag. It's been quite awhile, but I'd sometimes have to close up as a volly, when the rangers were otherwise engaged. This included locking & checking the buildings for vandalism or B&E's; comparing the remaining license plates in the lot to those signed out overnight & passing that list to dispatch; and leaving the current Longmire gate combo on the vehicles of late day-trippers. Also securing the...
Nice pictures ! The slope to the right of the pillar in the back bowl is 911 . Named by Dorothea Driggers .
Thanks..we spent the whole day on the south slopes dropping towards butler creek. The snow was nice corn back there. An inch or two penatration. The last run in twilight down the north side was actually better than I thought it was going to be. Weakened firnspiegel in the upper bowl and a softened crust down lower. Even the narada slope was fun in the dark. And yes...we arrived to a locked gate at 6:20ish.

I was across the way and caught that sunset as well. Nice ending to a day.
So, what was snow in Tatoosh up to that day, on the northish facings? Crusty? Crust softened by ambient temp despite lack of sun? Or no crust at all?
PS your pictures are much better at capturing that mood. Yours have far better aesthetics in foreground plus yours are from 10 min after w...

Well, zooming in on the photo above, the solid rime ice is as high as the anemometer's rotor:

So even after the rotor melted free enough to start spinning, the ice would still substantially obstruct airflow onto the rotor. It would make sense that the readings might be low until the ice melted away enough for the rotor to get an unobstructed flow of wind.

I do wonder if it is reading low, though, or at least was for that day after freed up. Like I said in my report, I bailed at Pan Point, so wasn't physically at Camp Muir or even on the snowfield. But based on the snow plumes I could see being wind transported off the edges of the snowfield near Moon Rocks, this slice of readings seemed at least 50% low:

Corn in January? That's nuts. It does not look like there is a lot of snow either.
Are you having a low snow year in south Washington?
The south side of St Helens is definitely showing a lot of bare rock, especially along the ridges, quite a lot more than is typical for January. A consequence of recent heavy rainfall and occasional sunshine.

Here you go.. this was solid stuff, more like milky glass than styrofoam in texture. The vane was still moving, the anemometer is quite immobile.
Looks like the sunshine...
Nice report and photos. Speaking of watching webcams, the NPS air quality webcam looking SW from the ski dorm captured that sunset nicely too, including the sun pillar also seen in your photo:
