There were few people yesterday and skiers were widespread today but not too concentrated where we were (just a party of 3 we never saw up close, and a single, who we knew). Day before yesterday I turned around at Cougar Rock and went home. Won't ski tomorrow tho, there were enough skiers and snowshoers out there to pretty much trash the snow by day's end. I think a lot of skier mus...

Didn't think you'd ski Paradise during the holidays with the hordes. Not many people headed up to Muir--I ended up sitting around a lot enjoying the sun instead of skiing. Pretty good skiing on the way down, though, but slow with the deep snow and moderate angles. Beats watching football.

Nice choice in terrain. This days are way too short but conditions are awesome. I was talking about you earlier today, saying we needed Ale to help us break trail in the White River Campground area.
Thanks for the photos Kenji, let's me re-live the moment! That was the most turns i've been able to string together in a long time. What a perfect day!
We were nervous about the steep stuff because a hasty pit half-way up Jove on the southerly aspect revealed a CT-13 on the old rain crust. Seems like it has been TG faceting on top of the rain crust that was about 70 cm down.
Powder yeah! David.

Good to meet you folks. Sean and I skied top of the crooked with an 'alternate' entrance. The top was scoured to the ice crust. Went over towards the middle fork and then back up to the top of the Slot. The exit to the phantom provided hard exercise. The track is in now. Cold temperatures could see further faceting along the ice lense and the snow on top developing slab like properties and supporting both fracture initiation and propagation.
Thought I'd reply to passenger's question as I haven't been on the computer for a while.
I remember you guys at the top of Gunsight and really admired the nice tracks you two put down after ours. Hope you enjoyed the skin track I put in as well. I don't always dig a pit or do a ski cut there, especially if I skiied it the day or two before and am aware of its condition as well as how much snow has fallen. I don't like to give to much away...

Nice! I was up with Spencer nearby on monogram lake / little devil peak. Sounds like you guys had a better day than us in the NC... we had to turn around when my Rottafella Cobras cable failed right when the snow turned from that crusty crap to nice powder. F@#*!
Beautiful day though!

All public buildings/arenas have a max occupancy, but I doubt Meadows is ever looked at. They base their capacity on the chairlift capacity... not area size. Adding all those high speed quads over the years has decreased the quality of skiing, yet the pricing keeps going up. They wont post a "full" sign because I don't think they care how you get there, as long as you buy a lift ticket. for the money I spend on a ski tour... perhaps I actually get more skiing in the backcountry. <...

Scott John is only my patrol name.

I agree. days are just a little too short right now.

Hey Scoot, where is this?
highway 20 just past Diablo. It's in the Nat park.
Err, too cold to take pictures. For me. Other guy probably got some really good skinning shots up higher.
I did manage few on the way in from Pyramid lake. Ended up being a lot clearer skies. The slope we rode is mostly visible in front of pyramid, falling left to right..

...it was a Cascade Backcountry Ski Patrol outing.
I had half a mind to tag along, but it was my first day out on skis again; 4 week anniversary of a broken arm... (a little in the field physical therapy :)) and my first day on dynafit bindings. Gorgeous day! So good to be back out again! Ended up Red Mt. way (not to t...
It was definitely wicked cold. The low clouds you can see below Lafayette are actually from snow guns blowing snow on Avalanche.
In the +/- 26 years that I've been skiing at Cannon (inconsistently for the last 7 because I've only been back for holidays), I don't remember a bigger day than this, it was incredible. Of course, I don't really remember all that much from the early years, and probably couldn't appreciate a big day like this because I was too young....

Gorgeous! where is this exactly? I want to put that on my to do list!!!!
That's the Slot Couloir, one of the best BC descents around Snoqualmie when conditions are right.
The staging area is 45 mins. east of Vernon, which is less than an hour from Kelowna. The lodge is your typical fly in backcountry lodge. Very nice lodge with some fun tree skiing.
Jeff, what's the driving time to that area from say Kamloops or Kelowna? Do you need a sled or helicopter to get in there?
I noticed them like swarming bees at the lift cues, but I had no idea that THAT was going on!
And I too is a Scott..... ;D we're taking over..... ;)

I think I hate you.......... ;D
Seriously, though, that looks awesome....super stoked to get some back country pow...tired of working and riding at a resort! My split is itching to get out again!!!!

Wow, the wind must have HOWLED up there bc most of the snow was blown off the top half of clear cut #1, but the bottom half was quite nice. Beautiful sunny and only 9 degrees at 8 AM. The weird part was coming back to the snow park parking lot jammed with cars because Mt Hood Meadows was closed! What a chaotic scene. Hundreds of cars all over the highway, teacup snow park etc etc.. Quite d...
the Shire!
Cannon rules, my mom used to write us sick notes to get out of school when we were little and take us there, never saw it like that though! Legit

Languished in the office all day. I am envious(green). Growing up in Lakewood, hard by Fort Lewis, Paradise was 75 miles from our door. Here in Ellensburg, it's impossible as a day trip in winter. Props!
Any signs of snowmobilers? Last year the Bennett Pass area was absolutely horrible with snowmobile traffic, they were tracking up all the clearcuts on a pretty regular basis. I'm hoping it was due to a low snow year and their regular places lacked in coverage.
Looks "wicked" cold!
I was just telling a friend today about how the whole family of 5 would camp in the middle of winter out of a 16 ft trailer in Franconia. We used to ski Cannon and Mittersill all the time! Cannon is known for it's ice and boiler plate...not powder!
Lafayette is a great climb! Remember the the Greenleaf hut?
Thanks for the trip down memory lane!

When you go into mirror lake do you park at skibowl, go down the road and head up the mirror lake trail, or do you head up through the resort? I have always wanted to head up through the resort, but I am not sure how they feel about uphill traffic. I always come back down through the resort after my final lap so I don't have to hike back up the road.
Great TR, Snowolf. Thanks to everyone for the avalanche of input. Now for the ibuprofen...
On a scale of 1-10, coverage is a 7. Still a little "humpy" with buried baby trees, but totally negotiable. The humps make nice little jumps actually.
How is the coverage (snowpack) at clearcut 1?
overpriced and overcrowded, I don't miss skiing at Meadows. :)

That guy is head deep in powder. That's great!
The real reason I'm responding is to say that your picture of Mt. Lafayette is amazing.
One of my favorites that I've seen in a while.

Great vid jeri. You know the dog is thinking "hey, will you HURRY UP!"
So awesome -- I skied midweek by myself at Cannon one day, when I was maybe 17. It was ridiculously cold -- had to come inside every couple of runs to warm up -- and I still have the Turtle Fur neck gaiter that I bought in the shop that day. Great TR, thanks.
8) Ahhh I know the area but I haven't been in that area yet. Headed up tomorrow to check out Mirror Lake. If the snow is crap then I'll head up higher but this bowl is good fun when the conditions are right!
nice work ryan! or is it pete? choking on that pow from the looks of it.
i lived in littleton as a wee lad and learned to ski at cannon. tons of great memories and still lots of family friends up there. can't wait to finally get back up there and show the area to my wife and little girl...
