I swear I did a nose cannon that was over 3 ft long!

Wow, cool  :D  :D
I should have recommended sunglasses! Have fun out there :D
Very nice!  I'd love to get up there soon myself.  Thanks for the beta on conditions.

It looks like you ski alone a lot... if you ever need a partner, I'm new to the area and am looking to hit the Olympics more often.
What a great trip report, this is the second TR of Mt Ruth of late, and it looks like such a great ski. I have never been, but It sure is on my list, thanks.
Thanks for the fun day Silas!
After Monday's foggy ice skating we were tempted to stay home.
Glad we didn't ;D

Some pics from the day...

Our drool was blown off by high winds and I swear I did a nose cannon that was over 3 ft long!
Very befitting for our geezer status ::)
Hey I just saw this-congratulations and quite a creative effort.   ;D

Is that second photo of something on Lillian?

If Ron drools a lot while skinning, the base will build up sooner.

Useless without pics.  Good on you, Ron!
We want pictures!
Are you sure it just wasn't Ron's ghost haunting the Patch? It is halloween!

Seriously, good for you Ron/

Ron Jarvis and I braved the forecast today and layed down our turns under forboding sky and very gusty winds. The Paradise patch under Mclure rock  was our palette. Accessed through icy Golden Gate trail. Snow was a hob goblin mix but nobody fell. Ron did extremely well with his usual good humor given what he's been through.

It appears that the "Ron J...
Nice. Ruth is a nice ski early season...and you can't beat the views. Thanks for sharing.
Damn son, you cranked up the saturation on these pics!  Eaaaasssssssyyyyyyy.....

Thanks for the report though.

turns out it would have been a perfect day to ski off the summit ...

While any sunny & relatively windless day is perfect for skiing off the summit, the snow on Tueday was better down lower.

Chuck, Scott, and I skinned up to ski the north facing slopes near Cofax (below the ice climbs) thinking we’d have more fresh snow. But alas, we still found the noisy...
Thanks Moscawulf, Gabe and Peter for a great day in the mountains!

Yes a fun day indeed as the irritation of waiting on pavement gave us quite the glow at sunset skiing down.  Thanks again for the ride home!
Well played, and documented.
It sure was a nice day out -- the snow wasn't perfect -- but at least it was edgeable.

here is my helmet cam vid http://vimeo.com/31239476
Awesome photos!  Looks like you got a wonderful day up there.

About my favorite place of anywhere.

I was a bit shocked to discover that no one else had even bothered to hike up to the pass.

Looks like a cougar or lynx was out enjoying the day as well!  Great photos, thanks!
Nice trip report, looks like the snow was great!  Your right that road is almost a deal breaker, 15mph seems like max speed.  I may go for round three, your skiing looked so good.  The last time I went, I wished for crampons, was glad to have my ice ax, nice to have a reminder.
Wow! Looks amazing.
Mouth-watering! Beautiful area...
The fresh from Tuesday was already gone when we skied ~1:00 PM yesterday . . . but the wind deposit made walking down the icy rock steps a little nicer.
great trip report Silas!
cool videos!
also some piccys from the last 2 weeks if anyone is interested.

Should we be checking some NPS website to stay aware of road closures?   We were lucky to miss the closure today, but how to be better prepared in the future?

FWIW, Tuesday's closure was announced the day before on the TNT's 'Adventure Guys' blog:

Did you carry shortie skins or use ski crampons ?

Neither.  This summer I quit carrying skins at all.  I boot up with skis on my back.  I'm not sure what I'll do once the snow is deeper.  I bought the 160's for ease of trail carry and weight.  They skied great in shallow fresh and they'll be good summer skis.  I'm...

Yep.  They came in the mail on Monday and I took them out Tuesday.  They skied great.  They climb like you'd expect a fish scale ski to climb.   Nice upgrade from my last pair of summer skis which were the K2 Summit superlights.

Great to hear that you enjoyed your first tour on the Vector BC.  I have a pair waiting for the snowpack to descend to road level....
Coolio Video!  Skiing Mt. Daniel - It's on my list to do with my son Daniel.
Thanks I'll put in the mix for sunday .

BTW, do I need a snowpark permit to park at Paradise?
You do not need a sno park permit to park at Paradise - you pay through the nose for your daily or annual permit already.  And I mean that in the nicest possible sense of the phrase "through the nose".

What is the earliest time in the a.m. I can pass through the gate driving up through Longmire?

Top of skiing 12:30

Are you skiing a pair of Vector BC ?

I thought I saw that red beanie descending from Muir!  Wish I'd have made it up there a bit faster.  I had a look at the PG from Anvil and was tempted to drop in.  I talked to a skier who was on the way down from the camp; said there was a party-of-five up at Muir contemplating the PG...  Glad to hear you guys got the goods.  Wasn't too bad on the SF either!  October pOw!
Very nice video.  Good music selection for the video.  ;)

Thanks for the detailed report ( as usual!!!).

Is that the same for other entrances (when those roads are open,i.e..)?

Thanks again for great conditions up-date (and the enthusiasm).
Hey Silas,
Funny running into you below Anvil yesterday.  We were caught in the 3 hour delay while they used dynamite to blow up some dangerous trees near the road.  It took a couple of bg booms and a whole lot of waiting before we were allowed to head up there.  They don't do logging like they did in the good old days.  Wonder if this was a Saruman vs. Ent thing.

We were POed at our not checking the road reports.  But why don't they schedule th...

Lunching at Muir we enjoyed a Chinook helicopter flyby, training perhaps, or looking for someone?

You could have at least cleaned the snow off the new web-cam so we could have watched you  ;).
Soon, very soon. Glad your finding the goods.
thanks for all the photos, everyone!  it's great to see so many different perspectives on a memorable early season day.

i put together a panorama of baker that i shot while climbing heliotrope the day before ruth.  what an imposing mountain!

You rock "Marker-Rock User."

I like it. Like it all.
