Awesome photos.  Looks like you timed the weather window nicely.
Whoops. Nice choice :).
The resort-skinning
Pre-season is upon us:
More laps than rocks, please.
Thats too bad it was tracked out at west.  Sure wasn't at alpental.

No shortage of fellow midweek slackers on the bunny slope today. Good coverage and really pretty good snow, considering. Actually got kinda tracked looking @ 1 PM ...
In regards to uphill traffic...

Skiing at alpental today and talked to the co-workers, they are going to be putting up no uphill traffic signs starting tomorrow thursday.  They ask to please check in with them before heading uphill from here on out.
Bird, I like your video.

get any flak from folks working at SummitWest? Is it fair game until they open?

Mutual respect goes a long way. Folks working on the hill are friendly; nobody likes a cranky morning.

As I understand it, the uphill policy at non-Alpy "Summits" is murky (Edit: see italics below), but low-key skinning is common until hill operations begin and again...
Now, that is a classy setup from head to toe, a time warp, I don't miss my silvretta's or wood skis but, that shot makes me wax nostalgic.
Charlie, thanks for the update. Nice photos of what to expect before the next cycle.
beautiful shots up there - hopefully they'll continue to pick up more coverage later this week...

Looks nice up there! I drove over the pass yesterday and it was dumping. Was wondering how it would be to ski!

Yahoo !  That viddy's got me stoked.   ;D    Any core shots?

Glad you liked the viddy!  I didn't hit any rocks... They were definitely there.  The wind packed snow helped to keep the skis on top of the snow.
Good Job! Looks beautiful out there.
Welcome home man! The top image says it all...."getting back in the groove".
Nice photos Brian, had fun out there. I look forward to more of these type of days this season. Time to get my ass in shape!
Excellent! Thank you very much for the info.
Nice work, Silas! Hope to get there soon, and hope for better conditions than I found at Summit West yesterday...
Good observation old guy.

There was about a foot of snow above 5500' to 6000' on north through east aspects that remained on the ground for a good while in cold conditions with plenty of clear skies before recent storms buried that  (those) layers. I haven't skied yet or dug a pit but I noted that layer while hiking in late October and early November generally on those aspects at higher elevations. Weak layers don't really go away except when rain penet...

Ted, Phoebe (Ted's dog) and I may have seen you and your kids.  We did two laps, had some fun turns.  One minor rock scrape.  Plenty o' weed surfing.
Touring on the road shouldn't be a problem.  We got 18" of snow out of this storm (on top of 7" previous), and it's still coming down.  And they're not plowing it.
I was thinking of doing a Nordic trip on the road to Reflection Lakes this weekend. Do you think there is enough coverage over there? The nice thing about a road is that you only need a few inches, assuming they haven't plowed it.
Thanks,
Ross

Thanks for the info.  Could you give an idea of the elevation and aspect of that slide?

~5,700', East facing slope.  The slide ran ~400-500 vertical feet.
Below is a the referenced TR regarding the initial discovery of slide activity.

It rained pretty good up there Sat night after 9:30 up to ~5K, which was actually a good thing as it set the snow up thick and solid at the base. It snowed/sleeted another 3" or so in the morning and I took the kids and dog out for a couple laps at West, 12-16" on the ground with the snow fully supportive, and no rocks. Fun enough for non-skinny skis.
Love the first picture, now that's "skinning from the car"!
Shrubberies?  You must be the skiers who say "Neep!"

Good adventure, guys.

Good that you were wearing orange then.

I thought the orange would be good to wear in attemps to avoid being shot by a hunter mistaking me for a deer in the bushes.

In the end it was a fun adventure...forging a path with the car, skinning from the car, setting off the smallest slide ever, skiing in the bushes, and being chased by a man on skis while dr...
Looks like the visibility was Sauk'd in.  ::)
Good that you were wearing orange then.
Hmmm, yes of course. One letter does make a big difference. Our day was spent on Sauk Mountain near Concrete. Thanks for the catch, I have modified the original post.
Where is squak mtn? Obviously not in Issaquah.
Alright!  Way to get after it!  Thanks for sharing the photos and documentation of slide activity.
Thanks for the heads up and way to get some good turns and keep it reined in.  Hoping for some heavy rains to soak out those weak layers.
A thousand feet higher and a few cilcks North we found some decent conditions around Stevens.  On Saturday cold powder was found on Heather ridge 10-20" There was no base just cold pow to the dirt/rocks so carefull turns were mandatory. Sunday was a different beast with stormy weather and higher freezing level. There is now a base. Good shrubbery slashing turns were had higher up under Skyline Chair and Big Chief Chair (Kehrs). Car to car skiing both days.

Side Note: We also did...
Uh, uh. I did't read carefully. Five pads when the front and rear pads are transposed, good to think about.
I can tell bear tracks when I see bear walking by.
I love travel partners,(human.)
I don't think the tracks are cat. Cat tracks have four front pads, the whole print is circular and you won't see claw prints like you will with a dog. Circular, no claw marks, and around 3-4 inches are classic sign of cat, according to a partner of mine. She can easily tell cat from dog. It's not important at home, but in BC, on the coast of Vancouver Island, it translates to cougar and wolf. A great friend to travel with.

Did you look for a tail draging print from the...
Hard to get too much of an idea of relative size, but if they are big, (looking at your one with your foot in it) I would agree they are Cougar, but Fisher do step like that.  When I take pictures of tracks I use mt pocket knife for scale. Thanks for the pictures.
These pictures are amazing, hopefully we'll see more like them?
uh, Jason, your photography is getting scary good.
Is that the power assisted bike that passed us on the obstruction pt. rd a few years back?
Looks like you made the best of a great fall day and the new snow.  :D

Didn't take you long to try out the new Whippet, I will be interested to hear "the rest of the story".  ;)
