That looks awesome.
How things have changed up there in just a week or so. Nice pics and nice choice. You earned some amazing goods.

There's a snaffelhound chasing you in that second picture.  Looks like a good day.

That's our guide!

Maybe it settled a little or my visual ruler is off :)
Here are a few pictures.  Didn't take any during the ski
Yes, it was good to get out!  I'm glad you took a picture of the axe-boarding for posterity....I was not about to stop to get out my camera!  In those conditions, the Talum would make a much better ice climb than ski.  I will try and post up a few more pics tonight....
Thanks for posting Eric. Lets get out again soon guys! Maybe next time when can use the non- business end of our Whippets....
More pictures:
3) Lower Squak Glacier with Craig View (right foreground)
4) Jason “axe-boarding” down around 8,300 ft
Thanks for the post Robie, next best thing to actually being there with you in one of my favorite places!
Hope to see you at the NWAC Snowbash tonight Scott.
I want to ask you some questions about this area.
That looks great!  Nice one.
Nice video, what a beauty of a day!

If any one heads up to Heliotrope or the road up to Skyline divide, I'd be very curious to hear about snow levels and amounts on the roads. Hoping access isn't over but its going to stay cold and a foot of snow on a steep road can put a damper on plans pretty quick.

Let us know!
Nice one, you guys picked a perfect day and scored! Curious what the road conditions will be like after last nights cold snow.

Nice work! Any chance by this weekend those gullies will be close to being full, or still a ways off? (Expecting 1/2" to 1" per day between now and then)
Yeah Steph!  tried so hard to get out with Frankie and Seth lst season. Them two where quietly killing it last year. Other then Grouse creek, most we managed was me playing you on the front of the snowmobile.

I remember that pic John. Had delusions it would be that filled when I got up there.

I like the ole tyme look too. Cheap Android app, but I think it does best with reds and greens.

Interesting day, the only reason I made it to Muir without crampons was that I was too intimidated to transition to downhill mode on the glacial ice above Anvil rock so I kept moving to a flat spot. Kyle, I owe you a beer or two.
yes! Michigan! Another expat here, Mt Brighton and Marquette mostly, thought I did hike at Bohemia a few times before they put lifts in.

I like the green pictures, they look old-timey!

Good one Scott!  Rock Mtn. is always fun early season, but you have to work for it.  Scenic too.

Looks bony compared to when Kyle and I skied it in November 2009
I was going to say definitely not cat since the claws are showing.  At first I was thinking large coyote or wolf but the 5 toes makes that seem unlikely.  My best guess was wolverine as well.  I have seen one in the Mt. Baker area and my dad saw another up on Cougar Divide last August.  They are around...
Not quite like last Tuesday, but still a great day :)

Here are a few more photos from the day...

That snowball took a sweet line!
Cool video!
That snow looks sweet ;D
Neat video with your skiing shadow.
glad to see the pup is getting bigger!!  Come up north to bham soon to head out with frank & I.  I'll be down to school 2 days a week next quarter, and will need something to do

Ha..

a revy is a real thigh burner! I'll lay of the green camera next time.

I first skied pine knob at the age of 16 in a sort of 'hood's in the woods thing".  Low light of all my days was at the still very warm landfill down near Wyandotte.  michigan lengt runs seemed appropriate since they ranged between 900' mt bohemia, and 300', alpine valley(where I first skied with m lady).

I was considering calling them 'colorad...

Not bad... we got in a few Michigans and then finished the day with a Revy!

I love it.  I grew up in MI where the XC is excellent, but the downhill....leaves something to be desired.  I remind myself that everytime conditions are less than enjoyable....at least I'm not skiing on a 300' former landfill (Mt Holly).
The green color is making me queasy!
Michigan length runs= nice addition to the vernacular.

How was your day?
Not bad... we got in a few Michigans and then finished the day with a Revy!
yes. hero dog snow... cautious human snow.

A few to several inches on a nice firm existing base. too variable to call. No rocks where hit.  Wind definatly depostied a lot of snow in the bowl... north slopes looked baren, and west needs more snow too. Zero wind throughout the day.

note, these are short michigan length runs of only several hundred feet or so? great workout and transition practice.

also.. don't try and drive up smithbrooke anymore this year wi...
Nice!  Looks like a perfect day for the doggie too.
Spooky first photo.  Good job ekeing out 36 months.

I have been to Mt. Rainier  five times, and have never seen the mountain,

I'm just glad you didn't slide down the Flett into a pile of shale.  Sorry to hear about the poor weather.
from the looks of the first pic, it looks like the fresh is graupel. I skied some 2 seasons ago and it was only 3 inches deep but it packs down perfect
Thanks for the use of the picture for the front page, Todd!  Beautiful day y'all had.
Nice TR and pics.  What a treat of a day it was...a good pre-winter tuneup, earned views climbing out of the clouds and some very enjoyable turns.
Congrats on getting the month in.

You should have kept climbing...things got better and better as the day and elevation went on.

Beautiful - those late season sunsets are so good.

early season?
Beautiful - those late season sunsets are so good.
As the day progressed, the clouds fully dissipated in the valley and we were treated to a beautiful Oct. sunset.
I showed the track to a friend of mine who does a lot of animal tracking, and she said it's likely that it's a wolverine. Which is pretty rare... you got lucky! Any additional pictures?

The walk down with the sun setting was absolutely gorgeous!  Back to the car at 7 PM in full dark.

AMAZING SUNSET on the way out!!!
this is my first try posting pics......
Thanks Andy for bringing up an interesting subject (the claw marks)

I was puzzled by the claw marks but dismissed the idea that it might be a wolf simply because that doesn't seem particularly reasonable.  They were large, much bigger than the coyote tracks I've seen in the past .It certainly was a not a dog, I was the only car in the lot and they appeared only briefly maybe 1-2 miles up the trail.  Wish I had taken the time to find the clearest print.

In that s...
Long as we're nitpicking, quibbling and hijacking, I believe that's "Ruth Mountain."  "Mt. Ruth" is located elsewhere.

No Jtack - just David, Susan, and Charlie.

Susan borrowed my camera, so I'm borrowing two images from the SD card. If winters' snows don't bond well to this crust, it's going to make a great bed surface. Note shiny snow!

Are you sure that's a cat print, with those claws?  We're wondering if it was a bear, out snacking before hibernating....under all those mountainous snowfalls starting any day now....

Definitely with claw marks.  But doesn't look like a black bear:

So it was a ve...
It turned out to be quite an amazing day. I feel bad for those who turned around in the morning clouds and fog. Despite the fog, there were still quite a few people up there and almost everyone was on skis. There’s decent coverage to pebble creek. The snowfield was hard-packed and wind- blown but the last 1000 ft or so softened up nicely in the afternoon sun.
Definitely a beautiful trip.  Thanks for taking the time to share.  I can't wait to try that area out myself.
