Carl you're an awesome skiing machine! Nice footage! It was a pleasure to meet you in the BC and hope to run into you again!
Baker BC is a zoo this time of year when it is the only show in town. I am getting less tolerant of the masses in the slackcountry and beyond as I get older. An early start makes me less grumpy. You come up Marcus and I will gladly wait for an acceptable start.
Hi Zap, I was one of the others on AT gear and have to say/agree that the conditions where really nice. A lot of untracked turns available and the quality of the snow was great - as was the sunshine. I also did a check of Hyak and it looked busy and tracked out...& maybe even more unfriendly terrain features.

We followed tracks in to Miner's Basin above Gold Hills.
We skiied 6k ft E face w/ surface sluffs then tried 6k ft W face and nearly set off the whole facelet. Multiple fractures but no running avy. The trees by the edges let loose because of the avy being nearly set off. Occational wumphing all aspects 6k ft.
Yeah, definitely a scary snowpack in spo...

i'm about ready to give it up and sell our AT gear because of all our injuries but you make me think we should give it another shot
Hi Kath, I do understand the feeling especially after all the injuries Jill and I have experienced in the last year. Hopefully, you and Robert have recovered. I find that being in our mid 60's we just don't heal as fast...

We were across the street hitting the backside of the area. Pretty darn good snow for this early, everyone hit a rock or two, but it was worth it!
I mostly am familiar with Bullion Basin area (backcountry with my lab), but Silver Basin sounds awesome. I'm new to 'turns-all-year'. Where do people meet for ride sharing (I'm in Olympia, WA)?

What a beautiful way to start the season. Knee deep, light n fluffy and good vis in a.m.. Skinned up Appliance store via top fo Queen chair. Considerable ammo...
Nice! I was going going to head up to Silver Basin on Friday before CM ski patrol strongly recco'd against it. Looked like great conditions...can't wait to get out there.
Nice! Sounds like Pete and Becky didn't suffer too badly from your "selective partnering" ;) Hope to get up there for a tour with you soon -- and now I know I have to leave really early.
one mile. We were towing a sled. Although the sled was pretty light with no gas in it. :(
Awesome! Sounds like you need fatter skis :D
How far up were you able to drive before resorting to chains?

We were going to tour up when the lift op said no.
John saw us and asked if we wanted a ride.
I'm sure Tara had something to do with it ;)

Very sweet snow again today, albeit with just a few more tracks in Nash than yesterday. I took the kids to West in the am before heading over at noon. No shortage of skiers, boarders, and snow shoers making there way up the hill on my way up and on the down. Fun times for sure.
It was awesome up there today. Upper and lower nash were about as sweet as possible. Had to grab a second run on Lower Nash before running home. One hell of a first powder day of the season for me! To bad we never crossed paths.

Hey, you're on a chairlift! No fair. Lucky!
Funny, they said "No." when Scotsman asked. >:(
I knew we shouldn't have let Scotsman ask. :(
Funny :D I asked really nice but Carl had Tara with him and I only had you and Brit( banned)! You guys don't look as nice as Tara!

Nice. Well, shows what being impatient gets you, I get up Thursday at 0330 to test my new powder setup in fresh, get a rain crust. Should've waited 'til this morning it seems. Oh well. Interesting to know the crust went all the way to the top of Alpy... does the new stuff seem to have bonded relatively well?
I did not take the photos. My friend Rylan is a pro photographer and took them. Im not entirely sure what the camera gear is though i believe he was using a wide angle lens.
I have skied from the Baker parking lot numerous times and for the first bit (Blueberry Shoots/Table Mtn/Swift Creek) there are always people simply hiking out using the easiest route (the skin track). Obviously poor etiquette, but just something one has to deal with. Going beyond these areas usually means next to zero foot traffic. Think of it this way: they may be mucking up the skin track, but they are likely more staunch advocates for protecting wilderness areas....
Just a quick re-edit ::)

Someone had to get it....It might as well be you! ;D
No dice....But I can only imagine, if I remember the terrain correctly, Oh wait, yup ....Sweet! Stoked...
It's not up quite yet. Looking forward to it
I watched the video. Sweet tunes to go with sweet turns. Way to go back for seconds too.
Sadly, the camera was forgotten in my rush to get out the door this morning. I have no excuse for the lack of poetry, other than not wanting to embarrass myself here quite yet.
author=davep link=topic=22377.msg95610#msg95610 We broke a traverse up Big Chief and were lucky enough to have some nice young guys catch us part way up and break the rest of the trail. :)
I was one of those young fellows, thanks for getting us started! We saw your tracks up on Double D, on the way out. Nice work!

That's what Tara told me today...
Seems to be working fine now?
I'll put it up on vimeo too.
It was closer to 12" over at Alpental for dawn patrol, but both areas skied very well without a hint of the crust, save for the skin up on parts of chair 2 (crust went all the way to the top).
The sun coming out as I was leaving was too much to overcome- I had to stop at West on the way out for 2 more quick runs.

Zap,
Hi5s aren't exactly billed as hardpack skis, but they don't appear to have real negatives there other than a speed limit. My ski all last year was a Mustagh Ata SL in 178, which I liked pretty well in anything but really deep powder, where I wanted more float. Amount of rocker on the tips of the Hi5 makes it feel shorter than the nominal 178 on hardpack, and it seems pretty nimble. Nice and light for a 105 waist setup, the RT bindings were fine, though I need to get use...

Predictably, I'm pretty sure conditions improved after we left Thursday morning. The post frontal convection didn't really set in until Thursday afternoon, and looks like most of the lower elevation accumulation associated with this system showed up then and overnight. Glad you had nice turns, I expect if I go looking up higher this weekend it'll be quite pleasant.
Congrats on your first tour.

Cheers.

Thanks for the posting, I was thinking of going to Alpental to Chair peak and back tomorrow... this was insightful.
Also, amazing photography. Did you take the photos? May I ask what equipment you used?
Thanks,

Thanks,
Skinned up and descended Hyak yesterday AM for dawn patrol, and noted the same conditions: About 2.5 feet of snow at top of Hyak, with 1 - 2" of fresh on top of the rain crust. Made for some tough skiing, as you had to stay on top to prevent getting submarined by the crust.
All in all, a great way to kickoff the season. Looking forward to more turns as the white stuff keeps falling!
Note to those trying Hyak: There are a few exposed creeks that you have to...

Family Feud #1 answer for what pisses Joe off most in the backcountry ...but what can you do? Beats hanging from a cross and asking God to forgive them, for they know not what they do.
I thought #1 was when somebody crossed you ski tracks???? I'm getting confused again!
Thanks for the insight about the rain crust. So how did your new setup handle the conditions ?
Nice. I'm totally stoked for dawn patrols this year.
So i'm assuming that was you guys I ran into at chair two? Nice shots. Let me know next time you're up touring around here so I can get my picture taken!
