Nice harvest, Traslin bros! I've done that climb up from town in the summer, also experiencing no crowds (in early August). However, there always seem to be leftover moguls and late summer ice. Your conditions were a shade better...

Better hurry back down here, tho. The forecast for the coming week will save you alot of gas money!!!

@Greg....You are right! Do not forget about the avi debris....Anouther two weeks and the moguls should be there....

Cheers Thanks!

Thanks for sharing the second photo Andy? To funny, I look like Tron!
I believe those are mountain lion tracks. The five-toed track is produced by a front paw stepping in the hind track. I saw a sort of weasel-family shape also, but I ran it by a friend who literally wrote the (a) book on the topic. Here is a link to a good photo of a marten track in snow, which is a decent stand-in for a fisher track; you'll also find a clear image of a mountain lion track.

Had some fun up there as well.

Got one lap of the good stuff (breakable crust and some windblown freshies). Returned to the car just before dark and rising full moon.

Sunshine, clear skies and wind= not a bad day.

Jason, Holly et al & Kyle/Amar et al good to run into you.

@Jas- who's in your photos? those turned out well.
Fun times up there. Love getting up late, getting a good climb in and some turns at sunset! It was great meeting everyone.

I stopped for a couple pics and thought I'd share them.

every now and then I harbour secret desire's to get back to my snowboarding origins....
nice to meet you yesterday Kyle! -
would have been nice on the board ;-)
Sorry to take so long to get back to Charlie's question but I have been out skiing.
You are correct in that it was buried surface hoar.
Yesterday I was up on the north side of Goat and that layer has settled out - warm temperatures has really stabilized the snowpack in that area.  Looks like the new storm should be coming in right side up!
Ski safe.

It wasn't powder and it wasn't corn but it was one of those days it was good to be on a snowboard  ;)
Hell, I said I skied Liberty Ridge on Facebook.  ;D
Remind me where Skyline Divide is.
Got carried away with links; hope they're useful to someone.

Nice save Kyle! ;D
Glad you had fun. :)

Here's a shot on the approach to the Muir snowfield at 10:00 AM this morning, roughly 1000 vertical feet above Paradise; the glint off the crust kind of speaks for itself. As others said, better higher up though.

Warning:  It is early season but the danger is lurking.  With ski pole test we couldn't "feel" any layers beside the wet crusty layer at the base but we ski cut a really big avalanche, probably a D2.5, R4.  Aspect was 350 with slope angle right at 38 degrees.  Dug...

The snowfield proper was pretty good below about 9k, though it was very windy there as well. Nice soft snow, if slightly sun and/or wind-effected. Above 9k there were large patches of ice. I suspect others will post photos.
Hmmm... I wonder how long a drive from Wenatchee....  That looks really nice.
Looks like you made the right decision, or should I say the "Left" decision. We went up the busier right side of the Palmer on Sunday and had mediocre conditions at best.
Good call - no bumps or people falling in front of you half way down either . . .
An A4 and a Rav4 both ditched it going up the road on Saturday, not sure about anybody else.  Good call parking it if you didn't feel good about keeping going.

There isn't a wild amount of clearance with chains on, but there's space to be functional.  In my garage I don't get any contact lock-to-lock with the chains installed on my 06 wagon.  The chance of contact goes up if the suspension goes into bump though.  That means go slow and be gentl...
Really fun day out.  We had quite a party in the muir hut - thanks to the six pack of rainier tall boys that I distributed in the parking lot.  Nice meething everyone!

Thanks for the warning, Chuck.

You just have techno language to describe conditions. Where are your pictures for the visual learners?

Here is a flicker set with some pictures:

great day!

Nice pics and report.  Can't wait for a bit more snow to fall and the season to come into full swing!
Doh!  Thanks Scott -- yeah, that'd be me not paying much attention to snow reports and the details...  That makes a lot more sense... :)
I think you have the wrong skyline Marcus. This would be the skyline divide in the mt baker area.
I don't think turns on heather/skyline ridge would even be possible.

the storm that gave 542 so much early season love barely left 2"s in the stevens pass area.

Nice outing by the reporting party. sunrise alone looked worth the effort. thanks for the pretty pictures.

Another day in Paradise,  I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it may be my last for a bit.
Not all of us were smart enough to head to the leward side.  From Muir we found hard snow, then mixed, then great powder from 9k ft down to Pebble Cr.  Fairly boney below Pebble Cr.  "Discovered" a wide trail on the E side of Alta Vista, it was fun to ski accross an aspect I usually avoid because of avy concerns.
Looks like a great day! :'(
Nice photos Silas.
Big thanks to the "White crew" for letting me tag along. They did reap the benefit of chocolate & hot tea in the hut for their generosity. Pretty spectacular day for a first time on Rainier, even got a self portrait drinking a rainier on Rainier. Great day except for the one whiner that kept complaining about his boot not going into ski mode :) .

I'll be back, tOM
I like to remind myself that many people are killed by short falls in small rooms.
Early season hazards = Let's be careful out there!  My new Trabs have a long gouge from October.
Last November I remember skiing almost 2' of fresh with a base of nil---had to pull up before the full
"diving porpoise" effect so I didn't hook a tip under the hidden, snarelike branches.
Nice meeting you up there today.  Last 1,000' was a mixed bag of ice.  After that, pow!

We ski'd all the way to the lot!  Cheers for P-tex!

See you at White!
Thanks, really appreciate the update!
Glad you came out all right!  I've whacked my knees on early season stumps and rocks before -- doesn't take much to hide the nasty stuff.
I was the one who blew up coming out of the chute. Looking back i realized how lucky i was to not hit any rocks and how bad the situation could have been. I let my stoke to ski a sick line with fresh powder override my sensibilities about skiing safely while in the BC far away from help. The crash was a good wake up call.
Nice photos.  The dogs photos is of our group.  Here are my photos from the weekend...

Alasdair
Great to hear that you and Ron are back "out there".  ;)
Nice vid and pics -- way to get the early turns at Stevens.  That one header in the video is spooky in such low snow cover!
We all defiantly caught a few rocks depending on what we were trying to ride. A few of us got core shots too, worth it though for those pow turns!
I saw the slippery  trail out coming so I wore my aluminum crampons all the way down . One of my partners tripped and fell 3 times. Road was hairy for sure .Geezer bones don't like falls
Yeah Robie that was my subie sorry I missed you. By the time I hiked down the trail it was one slippery mother. and the road down was a mess cars and trucks in the ditch everywhere. Good skiing in the sun though hard to complain about that.
Nice to here that you two got out there and enjoyed some turns. I hope to catch up with you soon.
Good TR and video.  How many rocks were hit during your tour???
