Really great snow conditions later this afternoon.

Wolfs, you must have been the one approaching Muir as I started descending at 3:50 or so.  Hard to believe the clouds held off.

Definitely great day . The epitomy of fall skiing. I got a later start (after 1) and is remarkable how much of that snow on trail you show in pic #2 had melted. Probably saw 2 dozen other skiers/boarders?

Weather held up pretty good, nice light sneaking under some of those high clouds later. Was amazingly quiet in the auditory sense: no wind, no rockfall, just high mountain peace and quiet. For once I was NOT the last skier on the hill, one other fellow also up there at 5PM. We ended...
Amar - as long as you are playing spelling cop, I might point out a stylistic no-no in your post.  Single digit numerals are spelled out. "I did pass 3 boarders and 1 skier..." really should be written out at "I did pass three boarders and one skier".  :)

Yea...the Traslins posting here gives us some real stature!!!  Congrats on the 5 year streak.  Hard to believe it is almost that time again.

Hmmm, read the whole thread, but still need more info.  WHERE does the skiable snow end.  Can you ski to pebble creek?  Thanks.  Looking forward to the annual fall trip to Paradise for first turns of tthe new season.

We starting skinning at 7300 feet.
Thanks for sharing....The look on your face was priceless when we pulled to the village and there was no snow. It always worth it getting out there... Snow biking looks fun!

A week or so before the storm, the route was continuous down to the base of the Pebble Creek windlips.
Thanks for posting this E_N I have been meaning to put something up all week.

Here are some photos from Sat.  Notice the low angle jump turns.

what am I getting myself into...  ;)
way too much time on your hands ... all of you :-)
The pizza and beer there are so good.  Mmmmmmmm.
Careful, posting with the caps locked can lead to strains, sprains and other injuries, since your keyboard's DIN settings are invalid in that mode.   ;)

Special thanks to Pandora for showing us one of the many ways that the Caps lock can effectively get a point across!

Correction, that's "Hudge" thanks....  Get it right there Mr.  :D

HUDGE THANKS TO AMAR AND JAMES FOR POLICING TAY TRIP REPORTS SO EVERYONE'S ARMCHAIR SKIING EXPERIENCE IS THAT MUCH SAFER!
Good to see someone was getting turns in on Saturday!  I was up in the snow as well on Whistler, albeit on the bike.

* and yes, the snow is supporting the bike all by it's crusty self.  The snow level dropped on Monday, bringing snow down several hundred feet lower than what was there on Saturday.  Winter is on the way  ;D
At least the beer didn't have a crust.

There are a few leftover pockets of last years snow in the gullies below the camp area, but the camping circles are all melted out and the only worthwhile snow starts at the snout of that branch of the glacier right above the Hogsback right around 6000'.  Overall way better condition than a year ago, when it was largely exposed ice.
ok, no harm, no foul, but yeah, accuracy is better than not, even when the distinction seems tiny or irrelevant.  i've been guilty of a bit of carelessness before..

btw, it's good form to explain an edit wherever reasonable  to do so.  Continuity can get lost and comments can become confusing when the nature of an edit is not clear.  same goes for administrative actions where post deletions occur after comments have been offered.

wednesdays, not as rough as monday...
It appears there is a consensus that Amar sounded grumpy, and we can have some fun with that, but there are good reasons for being accurate as he says.

What comes to mind is that if people use a trip report for planning purposes and it's not quite right, it can result in a hazard.  Unlikely in this case but what if there was a significant obstacle in the stretch not traversed?  What if somebody said 'Well I know X Person and they took Y hours to get there so I'...
Must have been demoralizing to find that even the pizza had a crust.

Thanks for the conditions update - will you tell how far down (altitude) you were able to ski?  Is there skiable snow for any distance below the Hogsback?

Someone's got a case of the mondays. Get off the high horse.

LOL, x2.  I can understand the correction on Muir given the report did say got to Camp Muir, but seems like tact got lost in translation.  And complaining about grammar/spelling online on top of it seems a bit meh - but than again, I don't know I'd recognize 'correct' E...
Right on, Andy.

I think they're safe from A2's wrath up there in Canuckistan.
It's a good thing you all skied off the summit.  Otherwise the TR title would have to be "Blackcomb Snowfield."

I hate to post something like this, but I'm in a bad mood now, so here goes . . .

I'm confused as to how the above report was possible, given that I was the first skier to reach Camp Muir that day at 2:30pm. No other tracks of any kind had reached the camp since the most recent snowfall, except for the footsteps of a couple on foot who began descending from near the...
How did heliotrope look when you headed up there?
Nice!

This area presents a bit of a conundrum in terms of access in summer and fall. no roads up there, and no skis allowed on the tourist lifts, if/when they are open.

So how long did the hoof up from the village take?

Did I miss something?  Was this a first ascent - or perhaps a first descent?  I appreciate the info on the conditions on the snowfield and a good day out.  Now could someone please correct the spelling on the PEAK Karl Marx!

And I very rarely correct people's spelling online, but this goes for both you and cornRIDE. Please, please, please, it's Mount RAINIER, not Rainer and not Ranier.

There, I'm done being obnoxious for now. Sorry for bringing a bit of TGR-type behavior to TAY. I hope we'll have a much more pleasant interaction the next time our paths cross.

Yeah quite the herringbone track.  Congrats on 5 years.  I always enjoy your trip reports.
FWIW: Right on Amar. Shred13, seems you made good decisions based on your experience and objectives resulting in a good day on a great mountain. Lisa, guess I'm too old now, I don't get it and don't believe that will stand the test of time as a "great song".

Accuracy in posting is important if one wants credibility. There is no shame in making a decision leaning toward comfort or safety, to the contrary it is commendable. Integrity is the whole package.

Congratulations on 5 years.  I noticed the herringbone tracks of a hardy soul.  ;)
Damn, they made Hoji walk up there?

Congrats on five years, Andy!

Cheer up Amar! It's snowing in the hills!  :) This reminds me of a great song! "Hang me out to Dry". Check it out.

Headed up to Camp Muir Sat. Monring.  Left Paradise parking lot around 9:45, got to Camp Muir around 2pm, back to car at 4:30.  We (upupdowndowwn and Ben V)hit the weather window perfect, great hiking/skinning conditions with sun out and a slight breeze.  Getting to the top around 2pm allowed for about a 1-2 inches of corn to form on a smooth base.  About 2-3 min. after rode down to the base o...
Hey DG, the last couple of years the little Zigzag has been holding snow, but as mentioned it usually melts out or isn't worth riding in normal or low snow years.

oldhouseman - I like the White River route - it's usually fun this time of year and does make for a lot of continuous vertical (hard to beat 3000ft+ in late Sept/early Oct).  I agree, a few more days of weather like Saturday wouldn't hurt my feelings either...
Nice pictures as usual Stoudema.

I was up there on Saturday too, but on the White River side. Climbed up through the Ski area and along the White River Glacier to the base of Crater Rock. Great conditions for early October and one long run back to the parking lot. The weather was absolutely perfect too.

ahhhh! did you share your sandwich with me? caught the weather window (short) perfect. my girlfriend and i will be up in the area after the next batch of snow. it was fresher than anything else i've ridden since may ;)

now, if i can only find the matches to start my ski sacrafices... i've got the itch much worse this monday than last.

Headed for Anvil Rock but the wind had swept it clean of any new snow leaving it brown and icy. Descended the Muir Snowfield instead. Snow was wind affected and firm but rode softer and sweeter than expected. Worthy conditions for the 8th of October.

Thanks for sharing your epic trip, Alfred.
It was nice meeting you and skiing with you at Snoqualmie Pass last winter.
Really nice run.  Doesn't that sand / sharp rock / gravel hike back over to Mile canyon just suck?

Southside typically does melt out completely by late August / September, except for a small postage stamp snowfield that Timberline track-packs all winter and salts all summer.  This year had a great winter snowpack and little to no summer here on Hood.

Timberline's back open for fall operations this year.  Last year they had to wait for winter snow.

Wow - that looks awesome up there for October!  I didn't know that the Little Zigzag held snow all through the summer, it must have been nice to be able to hit that up I bet.  It looks like it was a great day for it - we were out surfing/boogie boarding at the coast and caught the sunshine there too.  Really looking forward to the snow season on Hood...
I wouldn't call it freshies, but I would call it very good :). Some of the smoothest snow I've skied up there on Saturday. Can't wait to get back up next weekend.
Wow! Looks like an Adventure!
noice.

was up with kevino & 2 non-tayers on the 7th & had some nice conditions as well.
Hi Mtraslin,

I used a Canon Rebel T2i with a 28-135 mm lens....
Good one!

What camera did you use to get those shots....Thanks in advance.
