Do you mean eloquent, articulate and enlightening conversation, ... or bloviating pontification? Enquiring minds want to know.
Wow - it's hard to tell from the pics, but it sounds like you rowed a long way to ski about twenty vertical feet on sand?
Kam, you are definitely skiing outside the box! ;)

Looks like it wil be ready by next weekend? ???
Classic: "You don't need much vertical for August turns. You don't need much snow for August turns."

Those cleats on your sneakers look cool! I would have like to have had them yesterday on the Colemann Pinnacle. Where do you get them and how much are they? :D
Silas thst was a lot of work to get that 2400 vf od skiing . :D It was worth it but there where times yesterday on the hike out from the North basin across those talus fields when my enthusiasm left me.
August turns are in.
Thanks for the tour. ;D

I wouldn't be so quick to count yourself out if I were you, Tim.
As they say at Commerce Clearinghouse, "You may already be a winner".
It might be worth your while to bring me up to speed on the details of the "pool" ;)

Aw -- Silas wins the pool.
I had my money on JW as the next to check it out and report back. ;D

Alan, I assume the skiers were PeterC, whose post is just below, and his friend. Sorry to have missed you and your son. Nine years old and already experienced in the gnarly backcountry! Maybe he'd be interested in contributing a report of his own, even if this requires enlisting his dad as ghost writer.

I wonder if those two skiers you saw were my son and I. We left the parking lot on Friday morning intent on an overnight ski venture. My son is 9 years young so we should have been obvious.
We were stopped by the steep snow tongue just past the trail junction to the chain lakes. Normally I have no issue kicking steps through that short exposed steep section, but my son does not have the experience and strength to do that with confidence and I just thought better of...

Sorry I couldn't join you, Charles; and sorry I couldn't again be left in the dust—in both athleticism and exercise of the conversational arts—by the Fabulous Pellastova Brothers. I haven't yet been out to the Portals this year, but I expect I'll be headed that way in a couple or three weeks if you're interested. That way, you could stick with your plan to give up your streak in September.
enjoy,

During our descent we met several RMI parties heading up to climb on Tuesday. One party had several attractive young women. Odd commented that they had “big sex” that would make it hard for them to climb the mountain. I mumbled vague agreement, not knowing quite what to say, then realized he was referring to their “big sacks” (backpacks). I'm happy to report that we avoided an in...
We were hiking around the Illescewatt(spelling) Glacier en route to Alberta. I did not see any skiing opportunities, so I am not disappointed that I did not bring my skis along. I may head up to the Black Tusk after returning home in a week's time.
i didnt get a good look at the zig zag,, it did look like there was alot of smooth snow off in that direction from what little i could see of it, ,, clouds developed from about 8 to 9k when i got up high,,
Hi Dan, thanks for your recent TRs and snow information. Could you please include the date in the topic (subject) line when you start a TR thread? I have added it on this thread, assuming that you skied yesterday. If this is not correct, you can edit it yourself, same way you would edit the message. Thanks.
Did you get a look at the Zig Zag Glacier?
Ahhh, Rogers Pass the stuff dreams are made of! ;D
I hope you had a good 55 th. birthday TELEMON and I fondly remember our trip to Diamondhead and your kindness in providing a bed in your house.
Won't be long until the snow flies again.Look forward to skiing with you again in the coming season.
Where you just climbing at Roger's pass or is there any patch skiing there at this time of year?

As far as the backcountry touring video - yes, eventually, I'm going to put out commercial DVD of some of the great ski tours of the Northwest. It won't be gnarly skiing video, but a ski tour guide that will be fun to watch and give people an idea of the routes, terrain "features", and hopefully some reasonable skiing along the way.

Nice job on the composite, Silas! You must have had a great instructor. ;D
I am glad that someone had a chance to go skiing on my 55th birthday,Chris. I was climbing on the snow-free flanks of Rogers Pass. Where does all of the massive snowfalls of that area go?

I am glad to see that the hot spell hasn't destroyed my "local" summer ski destination. There should be snow to play in when I return from barren Edmonton in August. I didn't notice many obvious opportunities for skiing while passing through the Rockies, although the hiking was great. Hopefully, our paths will cross soon, Mark.
I don't usually put trip reports on my website. But I thought this story was worthwhile, so you can find it on alpenglow.org:

Regarding Odd's name, I hope he won't mind if I post a little clip from his e-mail to me:

It is ok. But a little to short. There should have been minimum two vokals.

I think that should go in his book.
That is quite a story. Indeed.
I really kinda like the name "Odd". Is that short for something, like Oddvard or Oddvik? Or is it just plain Odd? :)

Here's a gimped collage of Amar harvesting the HW.
That's pretty impressive. Looks like the adjacent face is ready to go, too.
For another perspective on your route, have a look at this:

with particular attention to John Scurlock's photos (and the "before" photo from one of the group of 11 climbers who bailed up there on Sunday).

Thanks to Sky for mentioning www.gimp.org, a great open source tool for image manipulation (or time wasting?) Anyway now I (and all of you) can make cool stop action images like Charles! Uhh, that is if you buy a Canon A620 like his, or another digital camera that shoots in burst mode (two frames a second.)
Here's Scotty's "look" that Alisa was talking about:

Lowell,
Thanks for sharing the stories that continue to inspire us all. How wonderful you could take part in the climb and the family gathering.

It was a good time. I wish I had camera to capture the look of surprise on your face. Tallus fields are moving mountain sides. Taking break from skiing to climb this weekend.
Nice Photo's. Went thru your gallery and there's some good stuff there!
Robyn- Check this August 2005 TR out, and have a look at Ron's photo from an August trip in 2000:

Hard to say, but with the high temps, expect a great hike but maybe lower your skiing expectations (expect the worst, hope for the best) 8)

There will be plenty of snow - I think it would still be pretty good.
You might have to make a few detours as crevasses widen. We skied straight up, and down. But a few crevasses are open and they will get wider.

Thanks for sharing -- amazing events, as well as the telling of it.
Lowell,
The road opened only a week ago. They don't do any snow removal so it just has to melt out and be graded. It has been open to waterhole for the last three weeks which, as you know, means about a six mile hike. But maybe a mountain bike would make it easier and from what I saw, the six mile hike may be worth it. I'll try and get some pics up soon.

Very nice. Those chutes have long tantalized me, but I've never skied them. Do you know when the Obstruction Point road opened this year? I've been told it usually opens around mid-June. It would be nice to plan a trip out there around that time.
What an incredible event to be part of. I am sure the climb was great, but it must have been secondary to the whole experience.

I am glad you made it. It wasn't too difficult (on my return) to jump across the Elliot outwash on those three large boulders - but not too friendly for the four-legged ones. Dodger went downstream a bit and crossed where the river was wider, shallower and less forceful.
I should've waited a for the snow to soften-up a bit more - did you make it back to Cloud Cap before n...
Great story, Lowell! Thanks for sharing it.
Thanks for sharing that experience, Lowell.
Hall's relatives sound like great folks. It must have been fun meeting them all.
And what a great trip to write about in the book, eh? Your book is going to be an incomparable legacy to us all; would you please up my order to two autographed copies?

Like Paul, I was looking forward to your writing about this after listening to your story in the car shuttle back around Rainier. Very cool how it all came about and that this is such a piece of history that you got to take part in.
Great trip indeed this week end! This was definitely the route finding week end - it all started on Saturday when both Paul and I got lost on our way over to Greg's.
Definitely want to head back there another time earlier in the year - this is such a great aspect of Mount Baker!
Here are some more pictures:

A great story Lowell, thanks for sharing it. I recall you talking about Sigurd's history and the the family coming over to visit. I'm glad to hear it all worked out so well.
