My old stomping grounds! As soon as Tioga Pass would open each Spring or Summer, we would go dirtbag camp at the Mammoth area hot springs and ski all over the pass area. Here is a picture of me skiing either Tioga Pass or Saddlebag area in June 1993.
Seems like many left their September turns to the last . . . possible . . . moment . . .

You better have had more than a liter of water or otherwise I will be very disappointed in you.
Muir is such a mellow tour, who needs liquid?
;)
Way to prod the lurkers, Silas!!
Victor,
Thanks for coming out of the lurker closet! Hope you guys can share the occasional trip report to help us all choose optimal destinations for skiing. There's plenty for everyone, other lurkers need to give a little info this season too, instead of just consuming it. Let's connect for a tour near Crystal this winter.
Thanks too for everything you do to keep our kids motivated to learn, you are building our future's leaders and good citizens.

Good job getting snow in Sept!

Silas,
Great photographs, and I'm not saying that just because I'm in one. It was enjoyable meeting you and Charles on the trip. I can't say this enough, no matter how good, bad or marginal the snow is, there is nothing I'd rather be doing on the days above Pebble Creek than being right there. It's good to know people who also "get it."

Greg, nice photo. I think you may have come up with a new term to describe snow! Heifer-like patches :D
thanks for the update...the goods went fast....hopefully theres more to come soon.
guess i'll have to be content with turns on my surfboard this coming weekend instead ;)

Pete, as of today (Tuesday) the fresh snow has melted down to an inch or two, arrayed in heifer-like patches, which made for decent turns if you pick your spots (turn on the white) but down to ice with volcanic grit elsewhere. Amar's climber's left route is now not continuous, there are two carries of about 200 yards and 400 yards before you reach the upper snowfield - I think the standard climber's route might be better f...
The natural beauty and relatively easy nature of the Ridge draws everyone and their dog when the weather is favourable in September. An early start means that you usually only have to answer questions regarding "searching for powder" going in one direction. Perhaps I will really be searching for powder in the area next month. I am happy that there was still some useable snow for you.
Telemon:
That last patch below Coleman Pinnacle has lost only about 25' of vert since you were out there a few weeks ago. It was very enjoyable on Sunday the 24th with the new corn laid down earlier last week, and very much good turns/earns ratio! Glad I got out there early, as the trail was a mob scene on the return!

Excellent post...really enjoyed the slideshow! It motivates me to book a flight today to the Alps, a dream of mine since I was a kid. Thanks for the great photos...

Yes it was good to see and meet Silas. Kinda got my juices flowing and now I'm fiddling with bindings and wax.

Pete, I would say no, with the small amount of new that stuck and the sunny weather we're supposed to have all week. Still, I think you should go up and let us know what it's like!
I added the allowance of photos to Silas' post.
Not sure why you sound so disappointed about the skiing, Silas, maybe jet lag? I thought that, for September, the skiing was quite good, and definitely better than last September. I thought the areas with only patches of new snow added some fun, giving us something to aim for. Plus, all of the new snow seemed to have corned up nicely and was smooth and fast (helped by the fact the the underlying old snow was smooth and not icy, if s...

A lenticular cloud shrouds the summit:

Sky rips the corn on the Muir Snowfield, with the menacing seracs of the Nisqually Glacier seemingly just beyond:
(Shot from quite far away with a 250mm-equivalent telephoto.)

Not too bad for September:
No crowds, gorgeous weather, and just enough "recent" snow to keep things from being too scratchy. Quite an enjoyable day.
I think the Yaks need help with their telemark technique... clearly they don't have the proper tele stance.
I think you'd have been up there even w/o the shaming. Good job keeping the PNW streak going!
Yanna and I enjoyed a wonderful overnight up at Yellow Aster Butte, which gave us a good view out to the new snow starting to cover the ice on Baker. Made me think it might be time to start making sure the ski gear is in order. No streak for me...

Good to see you, Toby. I skied from 50 feet above the highest of your tracks, just because I could. Great conditions to below the Palmer halfway hut, then refrozen snocat treadmarks for a while (they must do this on purpose, surely!), then a slushy snow finger to 250 feet above the lodge. Definitely a worthy afternoon tour.

Well Silas, I was just waking up in the parking lot (2:00 am arrival from California last night) as you left. I caught a glimpse of Robie, plus an assortment of snowboarders, but no skiers. I looked uphill, saw a long hike for limited return (particularly compared to my single 3500 foot run last weekend at Mt. Hood), and opted for a nice hike at Sunrise instead. Then: a traffic jam extending solidly from the Sunrise parking lot to my own driveway in Bellingham.
I dropped out of heading up that direction last second. It looks better than i thought. Way to get away from the crowd.
Yikes, I should have checked the tay rules before departing for southern climes. ???
Four days at Cerro Las Lenas, powder every day and no new tracks, my own private ski area, wow! Now filling up on beef with friends in Buenos Aires, and $15 massages to take care of my aging body. Hope it lasts into retirement.
Back to work Friday, the party is over.

Cheater!! Silas - I think you should have to ski one northen hemisphere September day for each southern day if you want to keep your streak going ;)
Way to bag September in style. I bet you're eating well, what with all those under-$5 steaks and all...

Paul and I skied Muir last Sunday. The weather was nice while driving, then white-out rest of the day. With more snow and sunny weather in the forecast, skiing should be great this weekend.
Thanks for running guinea pig, Pete. Having been in hiding for the past month and generally unaware of conditions, your report is most pleasing.
Nice job Toby,
Wish I could have joined you and Chuck...I bet he didn't have to stop at the gas station after enjoying too much chewing tobacco. ;D
Much better visibility than I would have imagined.

Way to go mej.
I would have been up there with you if I would have followed my instincts and packed some skis.
We hiked up to Earl Peak on Saturday. No snow there. There was at least one familiar tay name in the newly placed summit register though.
BTW the picture I took the liberty of posting was from sunday near Saddle Rock.
You not countin' Silas? I count four!
I was up there that day it was great. Nothing like fresh pow in sept. You must have been the group I saw. We debated on following your tracks. Probably should have.
Silas, having got as close as booking tickets to Santiago to go on this trip with you and then having to cancel,( couldn't find a reliable way to cross the Andes via bus ) I am very, very jealous but glad you are finding some powder and people to ski with.
Next year I am going come hell or high water!!!!!!!!!!
See you for October turns. ;D

Woot! Had I not been recovering from Dengue, I'd have chased you down there. Nice work!
Uhhhh ...
You gonna do this every September? Like, as in NEXT September?
Just how much does this whole trip cost, anyways? 8)

I could see that new snow from Ellensburg and was wondering how much fell up there. I was wishing i was up there and I'm glad someone was able to get some turns.
no fair...you actually got to see the slope you were skiing as opposed to the ski-by-braille options at rainier.
looks like a fantastic day at Hood!

Right on - way to get after it. That sure is a pleasant sight to behold.

Nice job Pete
I almost made the trek down there but decided a local trail-run would be a better option. I'm sure you and Becky had some good laughs in that visibility. Hopefully those nasty suncups disappear with a little more snow. Winter is on its way!!!

Silas, Great to see that you are having some good powder turns in Las Lenas. Please get Rosa Maria and her sister trained "properly",aka - breaking trail and allowing us old folks to have first tracks. Jill and I will be back skiing in AR and Chile in 2008 and I'm counting on Rosa Maria to help an ole fellow in the backcountry. How's the telecomputing test ? Zap

There was a huge roock fall on the Kautz headwall ( I think that's the name.) Rocks fell about 3-4,000 ft leaving an avalanche type dust cloud. Very spectacular and would have wiped out all below.
Sky must have dislodged something when he skied it this spring.... ;)
Hey,
Saw you guys up there. Pretty nice run for some September vf! Runnels were a bit annoying, but the ice patches made it a true backcountry challenge. The crevasses are getting a little hairy up there. My climbing buddy punched through twice on the way down following everyone else's boot paths. Beautiful scenery though. We camped up there on Saturday in the rain which was less pleasant, but which afforded us a few lessons in soaked clothes m...

The Fryingpan seems to be a bit of a haul ??? and there is skiable terrain for the hardy.
It would certainly be a bit more of a haul for the "geezers", we were happy with our own Margaritaville not far from the parking lot. Clear skies, beautiful scenery, mountain goats, great friends, frosty beverages, and no sun cups, what more could you ask for on a sunn...
