Thanks for a great trip guys. Nice trip report and photos Skip, thanks for posting them. That solo evening stroll and run was very enjoyable.

That sounds like a great trip! I've looked off Whitman Crest at the Whitman proper when coming up from Fryingpan, and Whitman looks like a relatively sane glacier to be skiing upon - there were definitely cracks but the really big ones were few, far between, and concentrated in places you might expect like breakovers and compressions. Would you agree that skiing on the Whitman (possibly solo) would probably fall within many of our comfort ranges? (It's all relative of course...)

nice report. and i like the composition of the icefall photo, Frank Swanson. ready for August? ;D
Thats a pretty damn good achievement.
Do you know what your overall vertical gain/loss was over the 4 day span?

Wolfs from what I observed you would have to cross rockbands somewhere. There also appeared to be a finger of snow going off to the far right that might connect with the Wilson Glacier but hard to see from my vantage point. Guess the only way to know for sure is to go back.

Thanks Ron, Were you able to ski all the way down or did you have to walk out the valley?
We skied the length of the lower Paradise Gl morraine down to about 6400 where we skirted up the west wall of the morraine with a short portage. We basically swithced footgear and saddled up for the hike back at Golden Gate although Scotty stuck it out with more short carrie...
Looks like it was another great trip! I was overlooking your route that same day from ~9,500-ft on Little Tahoma. 8)

I'd go back if I could, especially since I did not do the bowls. Unfortanately I'm off to Michigan for 10 days. I'm hoping I can find some reasonable early August turns when I get back. Give a shout if you guys are ever looking for more folks for Oregon turns and I'll do the same.

I'd probably describe the glacier's condition as "sagging and opening up more every day". Our descent was more above the cleaver that extends up from the saddle at Cowlitz rocks. We crossed a wide bridge with cracks on either side of us at about 8300 and we had to...
Thinking of heading up there this weekend to help a friend keep his streak alive and have a few questions about route conditions.
How are the cracks on the glacier? Are things opened, closed or just sagging? Was the crossing of the 'Iron Curtain' at 7800-8000 pretty straightforward or did you stick to the shoulder (skiers right) and just hook back over to avoid the cracks.
Thanks...skh

Gouda as it gets ? Wisha wouda been there.
It was a very BIG day for the "geezers" so we had to skip a lot of things to get an early start so we could make our destination. We had to skip our usual Tall Timbers breakfast stop :(, skip the Muir snowfield :D, "skip the cliffs" ;D, and skip the Dairy Queen >:( on the way home. But.......it seemed we had our own secret garden to play in the whole day, not wanting it to end. This had to be one of the best days so far this summer ;D 8).

You probably made the right call. My brother and I skied the chutes on July 8, and things were getting pretty thin. We had to carry over some rocks to enter the chutes. We also had to dodge a couple crevasses lower down. We had a fun time, but it was definitely getting late in the season.
Thanks for keeping an eye out for us! The camera thing was a bit of a bummer, but hard to complain about such a nice day of skiing. We enjoyed sharing the chutes with you guys -- you were making some nice tele turns!
We were the tele skiers who started down with you (maybe it was almost 2 pm). When we got to the bottom of the steep part, we looked up and saw your party stopped midway down and wondered if there was a problem. We waited for awhile, and asked another skier who had passed you. He told us what was up, so we headed out. Sorry to hear about the camera, but glad that it wasn't anything more serious.

I was up there as well with some friends on Sunday. Couldn't have asked for nicer weather! Our trip sounds almost identical. We mostly just booted it since the South Route was so well trampled. Sneakers were quite nice for the approach and the Round the Mountain trail coming out.
The summit weather was great -- light winds and not too cold. The wind at Pikers Peak was actually much harsher. The visibility was just about unlimited, with Mt Baker easily visible. We also skipped the...

Nice work still skiing this route this late in the year!

Too bad about the crevasse. Looks like that's the exact spot we crossed it on our recent trip. Must have deteriorated a bit. In any case, the "sunken bridge" (in front of person in pic) is worth roping-up for.
It seems like there were several sections with some relatively new 3/4-minus gravel, but my poor car hates me right now because of the rest of it. I'm trying to talk it into one more trip up there this weekend, but I don't know. I'll probably do it with a case of fix-a-flat.
I'm still jonesin' for more of the Langille bowls. That was the best overall ski trip of my life.

Cool trip. First time I've bothered with Rainier.
Maybe should have bothered a week or two earlier.
Despite some lost Ptex still had a lot of fun.

A good July tour. I've turned back at that very crevasse at least twice in years past, but we crossed it a couple of weeks ago and continued on. It forms predictably but is also surrounded by smaller slots which may or may not be visible. Makes me nervous when I'm alone.
Sounds like you skied to the same meadow/swamp in the main drainage, where we also de-skied....but in the intervening weeks the trail must've melted out, saving you the trouble of bushwackin...

That road ranks right up there with some of the rougher roads I've been on.
Oh - it use to be a bit worse! They resurfaced the upper section in, I think, the summer/fall 2004. Prior to then the entire way was as bumpy as the lower section.
Nice photos/report! Hope it stays nice for August.
As always, I enjoyed your report, Mark. I have never skied Ruth Mountain, but I do remember admiring it while on a backpacking trip through to the Chilliwack River valley and the border a decade ago.

Thanks for the report and video—nicely edited, with good routefinding descriptions. You're producing a backcountry route video for commercial purposes? How about some details?
Was that really July 2? If so, the snowmelt between then and the 8th, when I skied the same route, must have been remarkable. Last weekend, there were just two thin ribbons connecting the Inner Glacier benches and the lower snowfields, but the skiing was still good.

Nice to see good coverage out on the Sholes Glacier, Old Reliable for September turns.
Glad there are others still skiiing the easy stuff at the end of the road. I was up there last weekend and skied the little thread remaining between the Inner Glacier and Bagley Basin: one ski wide with flowing water underneath. This weekend I opte...

You can hire painters - you CAN"T hire someone to ski for you!
Au contraire, mon ami.
I cannot be hired to paint but will offer a very competitive per vert ski rate. Small surcharge for hiking to snow.
Will even post a report under your name.
Nominal charge for attached pictures. No one would ever know it wasn't you

Iain, Jill and I arrived at Paradise late on Saturday and when we looked out the window of our campervan on Sunday morning we saw you tracks. Nice lines. Zap
I was visiting Sunrise with my family and was scanning the mountain for climbers to show my dad - your turns looked awesome through my binoculars :). Looked like fun.

Mike - You have low altitude hysteria!!! You are in SERIOUS trouble!!! You must IMMEDIATELY get to a higher elevation that has snow! Go now!! Don't wait!! You have a typical sign of low altitude hysteria - thinking that you will do house projects instead of skiing.
When you get to a higher elevation with snow, you will realize how serious and sort of funny your statement is:

It was nice meeting you and Evan at the Trailhead. That road ranks right up there with some of the rougher roads I've been on. The way out did seem a little rougher............hopefully we'll cross paths again out on the slopes ;)

Nice job Iain! The Fuhrer looked pretty nutty 9 days ago, so you definitely get some extra points here.
Nice report and nice meeting you at the trail head. What a good day to be on Snowdome with almost no one else 'cept us Eugene folk. Is it just me, or did that road seem even more jarring on the way out?
I tried to upgrade the above photos to the maximum resolution, but the system did not seem to allow me to that. So here are three other photos of :

I was up on Snowdome Friday (14th) and had a great day. We followed Eliot Creek up to where it was coming out of the glacier and crossed there. We saw the the seasonal bridge on shore waiting to be put in place. We booted up the edge of the

Just got back from skiing snowdome today (Saturday). The snow was still great at 1:30pm this afternoon all the way down to the TL trail. The snow bridge near the location of the summer bridge on the new Timberline Trail section near Cloud Cap is still good. There is a small hike over tallus at the top of the Languile (sp?) bowls as others have mentioned and the waterfall at the bottom is still mostly covered but watch for the large crevasse in the middle (my dog nearly fell in...

Yeah, dudes! I'm bummed I couldn't come along, but I'm glad you made it. :)
Wow Freshie - I had no idea that was you again! What a small world. Thanks for the update re the lower bridge. That's super good info. I too love the Snowdome tour!

I'm not sure about current conditons, but on the 1st there was just one big obvious one up around 9000'. In years past I've seen and skied right over smaller ones lower down. All in all I don't think theres much danger to worry about, just go and have a great ski.
Hey Freshie,
Good to hear that the old trail lead to a good snow bridge. I hate that last little climb from where the trail is 'closed' up th the new crossing point. when i was up there a couple weeks ago I knew there was probably a snow bridge down lower but decided to go with the known as I was pretty tired out (had to hike up to the trailhead before the road opened) and wasn't sure the condition of the old trail and possible snow bridges.

Jeff, twice in a row now I've come down to Oregon for a tour and picked the same trip as you. You all blew by the two us at the base of the dome and then we had lunch just below you at the top.

Hi Matt - The snowbridge over the Eliot is still intact. The seasonal bridge was not in place yet on Sunday. If the snowbridge is gone, it may be a bit sketchy of a crossing.
Good luck,
Jeff
Good luck,

Was up there Saturday as well. We only topped out at 8400' on the Russell, cause of time constraints, but it was cool skiing that one bit of the Russell plus the Flett. First time I'd even been to that corner of MRNP. Actually as we were crossing the eastern "piece" of the Flett, we saw one snowboarder cruisin down towards that little pond. Was probably you, Snoslut. 8)

I've never been up to snowdome, and am planning a trip this weekend. I've seen that most people have said there's one open crevasse up top. In general, are there lots of crevasses to watch out for, or mostly just up top? Thanks.
I just looked and saw this report was from Sunday (not Monday like I orginally thought). I assume the snow bridges were still there as they were in the July 8th report.
