Congratulations on your "coming out" Robyn.
Nice report; thanks for posting.
Did you have to "deski" to get down from Pan Point?
Yup, there and Pebble Creek were really the only spots, before we got close to the parking lot and just ran out of snow.
No problem adding the photos. In fact, they match exactly the view the next day, Sunday. It was a beautiful day!
Thanks for the report Robyn. Sounds like you had a great day. Hope that snow stays close to the parking lot into August!

Without mentioning names some of us were even fortunate enough to get a tongue lashing from the ranger.

Sound like a wild party. Who would have suspected the "Home Wreckers" would cause such a fuss.
No fuss, no muss, our "geezer"...
I was in the Gang o Four on Sat, parked right next to md2020 I am thinking now.
'twas a very nice day for skiing. Perhaps a bit cuppy in parts, but firmness of underlayer way better than a previous trip Jul 4 2005, where the Russell was rather mushy. OTOH coverage on the Russell headwall was considerably less; was not possible to ski from the 10200 point this year, would have been last year this time.

Ahhh! My heart was with ya !
One thingthat is fun up there as the year progresses is small ice caves above Cateye.

Bullshit! You can be mine...
Sorry, just couldn't leave that untouched. Nice work again boys -- Toby, I only saw that knee drop 3 or 4 times in FM! Looking good.
Matt, photogenic as always. 8)

Great day for the event maybe next year.
Good to see that Sag is still skiing, and on a new set of BD skis.

So, ah, Ron, I heard that there were some chutes by the lookout ;D
We missed those. So much to ski, so little time, eh? ;)

Awesome. Crazy to see how many people are getting on the NFNWR this year! Nice pictures.
It certainly was a great chute fest :D, great weather, skiing, and friends, what more could you ask for. The snow conditions were fantastic, and our favorite chutes were at the peak of their harvest ;D.

Brenda and I were up there on Sat and found decent conditions. The strip of snow out of Spray Park up to the Flett Headwall was a bit of a disappointment compared to the last couple of years - this is probably the latest we've ever toured up there however. It was the first time for us up on the Russell Glacier so we weren't sure what to expect. Lots of small cracks and some crevasses opening on the west edge. Some ice coming through that we had to be aware of - the dirtier snow was usu...
RB and I were up there Saturday and saw you guys descend. What time did you start Toby? We were heading for summit via Roman Wall. One particular crevasse half way up that required an end run on lava rock thus de-skiing both up and then down (too big for 50 somethings to jump). So we called it a summit at just over 10,000. Still a pretty good 5200' run. Some smooth and some bumpy. Mr tele instructor was using a lot of parallels on tired legs.

For those interested, you can check out the current suncup situation in a picture located in the Squock Glacier TR from July, 9th. That picture is at approx. 7500', when they are smaller. It's interesting how different people interpret the same conditions. I guess my alias as "optimist prime" may be in jeopardy!!

Don't all these mountain names just mean "big white thing"?
Perhaps some of these names do (but some don't). And, in my opinion, it sure beats "big white man".
Wonderful story and a fitting tribute to Carl - thanks for the posts and pictures!

Great trip report - thanks for sharing. What a great sign to know which would be the right summit to go to!
On the dust issue: what did people do as the next step once the blow technique doesn;t work? Shops will clean it up, but also charge a good chunk of money for it...

Paul: i just noticed your signature with respect to the "hibachi". that's pretty funny!.. ;D you know i find myself significantly more aware of your actions after that incident.... ;)

Re: Dust on digital sensors...
To clear dust from my sensor, I've been using a floor pump with a basketball needle pump attachment similar to this ----

It gives a good, accurate blast of air. You'll obviously want to be carefull not to touch the sensor with the needle, and be sure to switch the camera to "sensor-cleaning" mode.

Thanks Lowell. I noticed that and thought it to be some spots on my lens filter which was dirty. But I did a test after cleaning it today, and you're right it was the sensor. I was able to clean it with a hand blower and that appears to have done the job. BTW, I've never had a problem with my Nikon 8400 that way (non-SLR) after LOTS more rugged use than with the new Cannon D-20. Will have to keep an eye on it.
Thanks for the photos, Paul.
It looks like you might want to use a blower bulb on your camera sensor. You'll notice some spots in the sky in some of your pictures (e.g. skinning on the summit).
As I mentioned yesterday, I've noticed spots on some of my pictures and, in fact, I know that my sensor could use some cleaning right now. (I've used my blower bulb as well as I can, but I haven't been able to get rid of all the spots.)

I found a nice chute west of Antler. It's located on the trail from Sunrise to Dege where the trail intersects with the ridge trail.

Hey Stoudma,
Sorry I haven't been on TAY lately and didn't see your message till yesterday. Then tonight I found time to try and put up my pics but realized I haven't yet installed my camera's editing software onto my new computer so I can't put up the huge picture files til I shrink em down. Perhaps later tonight or tomorrow- no promises though. Looks like theres some more recent info n the board anyway. Have a great trip!

Hi Oyvind-
Sounds like a great day for you!!! I'm heading out to Adams tomorrow and wondering if you have any beta on the condition of the SW chutes, or any suggestions for another route to be done solo on Monday AM. I've been up the South Climb twice, only to be weathered off just below Piker's both times. Wouldn't mind trying another way to the summit and perhaps something other than the SW chutes, although they would be my first choice, seeing as I...

Thanks Fatass!!! The NFNWR was a great ski. Unfortunately the Sorcerer Lodge dates don't work for me...but I'm sure it will be just as much fun (or more...if thats possible) as Fairy Meadows was.
The name Cheekeye for Mount Garibaldi comes from the Squamish Nation. Apparently it means "dirty place". Take one look at Dalton Dome and Atwell and you'll know why they called it that.
Got some pretty good shots of you guys.
It's not that hard to get good shots of such good skiers.
check them out HERE.

The U.S. Geological Survey has some good history on the naming of several of the Cascade Volcanoes.

Back at camp I met TAY celebrity snoslut (it was sweet to meet you Eric!) and then headed back to Bunny Flat.

Once Jeff was about to leave, I casually yo-yo’ed that a nearby hill again. Was shocked to see skiers still descending from up high at almost 4:00 - significant wet slide risk by then. Was even more shocked to see the...

Glacier's name, I believe, is Dakobed... Got that from Lowell's site...
There's a paragraph in CAG (the green one I guess?) that implies Dakobed means the same thing as Tahoma, just a different dialect. It lists a bunch of variants of Dakobed - basically a series of letter substitutions that morphs it into Tahoma.
Don't all these...
A complete list would be nice. In addition to the above:
Pitt-----------McLoughlin
Cheekeye---Garibaldi
I'm off to ski on Koma Kulshan--the great white watcher!

from wikipedia:
Mount St. Helens was known as Louwala-Clough which means "smoking or fire mountain" in the language of the local Native Americans, the Klickitats.
According to their Bridge of the Gods tale, Wyeast (Mount Hood) and Pahto (Mount Adams; also called Paddo or Klickitat by natives) were the sons of Great Spirit. The brothers both competed for the love of the beautiful La-wa-la-clough (Mount St. Helens).

Hood is Wy'East. Also St Helens is Loowit, according to some brief googling.
"Klickitat" instead of Adams. I like that. I have never liked calling Denali "McKinley" for the same reasons you give. So, if we are to be consistent, we need the complate list:
"Tahoma" instead of "Rainier"
"Koma Kulshan" instead of "Baker"
"Shuksan" remains as is, I assume, as does "Shasta"
But what are the others? Hood, Glacier Peak, St. Helens?

Did you ski the route as climbed?
Saw at 10200' where you had dug a deadman to negotiate climbing up the snow bridge and steeper 50 degree slope to gain the ridge. Left our skis at that point. Wish I would have taken them up that last slope but at the time I wasn't feeling comfortable to have the extr...
