Very interesting, great to hear about your project bearing such rich fruit, Lowell.
I didn't find any mountain booty at all...although I might have run into Loofus ??? Who/what is a Loofus?
I did a quick web check and got the following -
Loofus (loo-fus)
(1) a pubic hair that women occasionaly choke on, it can't be removed because its stuck in the crotch region very tightly. it can't be shaved because its made of steel.
(2) a really dumb douche bag. by douche bag i mean ignorant wanna be mean but can'...

So ended one of the most memorable climbs of my life.
Wow, very nice.
You didn't find any OR gloves did you? I seem to have sacrificed them to the mountain along with Loofus (on the same trip to boot!). Glad to hear the snow is still in decent shape :D
That's a wonderful story, Lowell. It was touching and engaging.
I've eyed that before. How about calling it just the west chute? Since it's immediately west of the southwest chutes.
I am glad you made it. It wasn't too difficult (on my return) to jump across the Elliot outwash on those three large boulders - but not too friendly for the four-legged ones. Dodger went downstream a bit and crossed where the river was wider, shallower and less forceful.
I should've waited a for the snow to soften-up a bit more - did you make it back to Cloud Cap before noon?
I think Langille is still good and worth the effort, especially if you...

Just thought I'd let you know that we made it, lab and all. We saw you on the ridge ahead of us. We spent some time on Langille and saw you making some turns on Snow Dome. Not a bad day.
Nice line. You may want to re-name your report to "Avalanche Glacier Headwall" instead of "White Salmon Glacier". Looks like you rode the last line of the year there(!), as you rode down onto what's left of the lower Avalanche Glacier. The White Salmon Glacier is off to the left in your photo of the mtn. (Many variations of the chutes on the Headwall are rideable May/June.)
Thanks, Mark. We were wondering about those guys when we saw them coming down a little after 8:00 AM - kinda early if they had summitted.
Thanks for the report, telecarto. Looks like you had good company.
I've been thinking about heading back after a perfect day up there last weekend (other than losing my 52mm polarizer as a sacrifice to the mountain). Is Langille still in good enough condition to warrant a day of yoyo-ing? I found that Snowdome was okay, but the bowls were really the silver lining last week.
My car is still cursing me about that road. I just recentl...

Welcome, Telecarto and the "labradoddle"; nice to have a few more Portland folks in our community.
Nice trip report, too.
Nice trip report, too.
hey Greg, I just sent three larg-ish jpegs (±1mb each). Use or distribute (or trash) as you wish.
Charles pleaded family obligations and incipient old age (although not in those precise words), so I headed up alone. I think I might've gotten a bit more skiiing than you, but you definitely had the more adventurous time of it. The worst possible example of bad luck/poor planning was the group of eleven (yes, eleven) climbers whom I met on their way out; the...

Looks like a fun day! Any idea what conditions might be like up there two weekends from now?
Thanks.
I guess - smiley or grimacing - just depends on which end of the crevasse you find yourself on....

Well, since ain't nobody else said it ...
Welcome!
So how were the frozen in tracks from previous weekends? Were they noticable still? In your photos, your tracks seemed the only ones visible, probably because of fresh grit on the snow.
Looks like the headwall part has melted out surprisingly little in the last 3 weeks.
I like the concept of "smiley" crevasses. If I fall in one, that will make me feel happier ;)
BTW nice username 8)

Looks to me like you made good use of Pete's sage advise, Robyn.
Nicely done.

I thought the same thing of that little snowfield and I was very close to cruising over there. As it was, I was fighting daylight to get back to my car (in which I promptly locked my keys when I reached the parking lot. Don't ask me how). Now I'm kicking myself for not skiing that little patch. If it skied anything like it looked, I agree that yoyoing it would've made for a great day.

I left the parking lot around 7 AM . . .
Ahhaa, so that lone dot was you, Mark! We were speculating as much as we packed up at camp.
I'd love to see the pictures, you can send them to gclouie-at-geemail-daht-kahm
Thanks!
Thanks for posting the report and great pics Greg. Fun times even without a summit. Was a good judgement call to turn back after 3 retreats in that maze of crevasses and facing a dicey snow bridge. Yes, returning next year to resolve this grudge match is definitely in the cards! I think I was once called afflicted (imagine that?) about getting into these places with skis late season (eg., Redoubt Spickard this time last year), but hey, who's to complain about skiing that surprisingly ni...
Nice report, nice photos Greg. I sense a telemarktips cover in your near future.
I left the parking lot around 7 AM, thinking to myself "Did Mike really do this approach hike in the worst heat of the day yesterday....?" I was also thinking, "Fer sure this isn't where they're spending my trail pass dollars." The trail has definitely gotten more overgrown, even since last year, and the (full) pages in the trailhead register all date from 200...

Scottsman;
Thanks for the great 'skin track' (as in loss of skin) through the shady forest. That wide trail was sure hot not to mention having to squeeze by all the hikers with my boots sticking way out to the sides and all the parents gathering their children close to stare suspiciously at the crazy people with skis on one of the hottest days of the year. It was great finally meeting
you and Alisa, watching Mack free solo the Castle and sharing the suncups with good co...

Yup. This one is a must for next year.
The worst day of skiing is infinitely better than the best day of work.

Sounds like a fun trip with the added bonus of seeing some great wildlife on the hike out. Wish I could've been there, as I'm sure it beat work no matter how bad the snow ;) Maybe next year?
An especially Rockin' video, Jerman. Must have been the editing guidance from Jen, eh? ;)
I was going to put one of those stills from the beginning of your great "46 degree" run in this post but for some reason, unbeknowst to me, msn groups puts something in their photo urls that much of the time prevents the hotlinking to TAY threads, which I find somewhat irritating.
Do any of you techno types out there know how to fix or work around that foible? ???

Its early Monday morning and there's nothing better than some ski/board porn. The ending gave me a good laugh. Zap its all good! 8)
Thanks for the info. My sources told me I needed a permit to ski from Muir.
Loofus- you don't need a permit on Rainier if you stay under 10,000ft, and there are no restrictions on solo ascents if you stay below Muir (or Schurman, on the other side)
I didn't know about the solo permit, either. I did obtain a permit from the Paradise VC, but she didn't charge me for the climbing pass because I was only ascending as far as Camp Muir. She acted like I really didn't need a permit, but she issued one anyway. The ranger at Muir didn't even bother to check my permit because I wasn't staying overnight. Neither of them mentioned anything about a solo permit, even though I made it clear I...
Jerry & Jen,
Excellent video ! It was a perfect day on "The Mountain". Eric, for the record, I was kidding. ;)

Would you agree that skiing on the Whitman (possibly solo) would probably fall within many of our comfort ranges? (It's all relative of course...)
It's pretty mellow and there weren't too many cracks if that's answer enough. On Little Tahoma there's a couple of places where you wouldn't want to fall above, but largely it wasn't...
Thanks ,Guys that's one I'll save info for the future. About four years ago I was in that area and it looked good then. perhaps a little earlier than this a traverse from paradise and exit out at summerland trail head is very doable.
Gary Vogt and I were going to do it but the Hwy123 was rockslided.

Thanks for a great trip guys. Nice trip report and photos Skip, thanks for posting them. That solo evening stroll and run was very enjoyable.

That sounds like a great trip! I've looked off Whitman Crest at the Whitman proper when coming up from Fryingpan, and Whitman looks like a relatively sane glacier to be skiing upon - there were definitely cracks but the really big ones were few, far between, and concentrated in places you might expect like breakovers and compressions. nice report. and i like the composition of the icefall photo, Frank Swanson. ready for August? ;D
Thats a pretty damn good achievement.
Do you know what your overall vertical gain/loss was over the 4 day span?

Wolfs from what I observed you would have to cross rockbands somewhere. There also appeared to be a finger of snow going off to the far right that might connect with the Wilson Glacier but hard to see from my vantage point. Guess the only way to know for sure is to go back.

Thanks Ron, Were you able to ski all the way down or did you have to walk out the valley?
We skied the length of the lower Paradise Gl morraine down to about 6400 where we skirted up the west wall of the morraine with a short portage. We basically swithced footgear and saddled up for the hike back at Golden Gate although Scotty stuck it out with more short carrie...
Looks like it was another great trip! I was overlooking your route that same day from ~9,500-ft on Little Tahoma. 8)
Thanks Ron,

I'd go back if I could, especially since I did not do the bowls. Unfortanately I'm off to Michigan for 10 days. I'm hoping I can find some reasonable early August turns when I get back. Give a shout if you guys are ever looking for more folks for Oregon turns and I'll do the same.
author=The_Snow_Troll link=topic=5135.msg21600#msg21600 date=1153320747]... How are the cracks on the glacier? Are things opened, closed or just sagging?...
I'd probably describe the glacier's condition as "sagging and opening up more every day". Our descent was more above the cleaver that extends up from the saddle at Cowlitz rocks. We crossed a wide bridge with cracks on either side of us at about 8300 and we had to...
Thinking of heading up there this weekend to help a friend keep his streak alive and have a few questions about route conditions.
How are the cracks on the glacier? Are things opened, closed or just sagging? Was the crossing of the 'Iron Curtain' at 7800-8000 pretty straightforward or did you stick to the shoulder (skiers right) and just hook back over to avoid the cracks.
Thanks...skh

Gouda as it gets ? Wisha wouda been there.
It was a very BIG day for the "geezers" so we had to skip a lot of things to get an early start so we could make our destination. We had to skip our usual Tall Timbers breakfast stop :(, skip the Muir snowfield :D, "skip the cliffs" ;D, and skip the Dairy Queen >:( on the way home. But.......it seemed we had our own secret garden to play in the whole day, not wanting it to end. This had to be one of the best days so far this summer ;D 8).
