Would the next person headed for the Shoals Glacier area please bring Rod a sandwich! ::) ;D

Are bushes part of the continuum?
They were on some of the runs at the Thredbo ski area  ;)

The remaining snowpack in the Snowy Mtns had been melting fast (a big rain storm the previous week had 'washed away' much of the snow below ~5,000-ft). Though it doesn't look like it in the photos, there was continous snow down to the river on a shaded south-...
Wow - this looks sooo nice - we are all jealous here - with all this snow I am really surprised you were the only BC skier over there :-)...

A continuous stretch of snow below the foot path allowed me to ski down to the Thredbo River bed.

Are bushes part of the continuum?
TAY dictionary-

Cooler: Noun; variant of the more popular term couloir.  A steep, rocky defile with a thin ribbon of snow down the middle.  After skiing or snowboarding to the base of the snow, you will find a six-pack of good beer just melting out.  (unless I was there first.)

Isn't it spring there? Is that all the snow they got?
Yes, but the coverage is a little better up higher.  According to the locals, Australia has had a poor snow year (in vast contrast to New Zealand which currently has one of its deepest snowpacks in many years).  Nonetheless I found the snow coverage in Australia to be adequate  :).
Many Australians...
Sounds like a damn fun time!!   Sigh.. yesterday was my last chance to skip out on work and get in some August turns to work on becoming a "ski streaker".   ;D   Oh well, I did get in nine ski months in a row, before August.... longer streak by far than I've ever had.  Maybe next summer I'll be more motivated to hike long distances with skis on my back.    8)  Actually last weekend I went to Whistler and I was totally wishing I'd brought the skis, but we had fun mountain...
Way to get it done, Cass! Isn't it spring there? Is that all the snow they got?
now that looks like Virginia... 8)
It's not even September here yet, Cass!
Way to get a jump on those September turns, mate!

Looks like too much fun.  ;D

Snoslut, thanks for the invite. Too bad the date didn't work with our Washington road trip schedule.  We were living the high life in Victoria on Sunday.

The Olympics were amazing and we are envious of your beautiful mountains.

Yeah, I think the Roman Nose is the main culprit in littering debris down the wall as well, toward the Coleman-Deming saddle.
oh, the shame, the shame.  JW confesses he made it back to the slush cup parking lot with unconsumed mountain maragaritas in his pack?  the rules are simple.  ski all the freshies - it will snow again tomorrow.  drink (or share) all the tasty beverages - the guvernor will make sure the liquor stores will be open again tomorrow.

I mean, isn't that the whole point of travelling with a lifeguard anyway?

Rocks rain from above the Roman Wall, sometimes in large amounts.  The Roman Wall looked pretty similar to your pictures during our descent after we climbed the North Ridge at the end of August '03.

Mt Baker is a pretty active volcano.

Bottom of the Roman looks brutal. I was there in Oct a few years back it is was pretty blue ice where there are rocks now judging by the pics.  Are those rocks sitting on Glacier or are they were the glacier used to be?

Sad for this year if it rock on ice.

Sad for the rest of time if it is the rock below where the glacier *should* be.

It was a great day :D, there was more wildlife out than skiers, where the heck is everyone??  No suncups on our HUGE, (as Kam puts it), patch  ;D.   We enjoyed a few laps, took a lunch break, watched the goat, took a few more laps, had our very own famous ron j "mountain margaritas" and visited with the tourists on the way out.  Gosh, they were more interested in us than with the wildl...
It would have been better had you been there, Jer... I had to drink yours, too  ;)

David - You're too kind.   The MadDog and I have been thinking it would be nice if we could figure out a way to hook our walkers up to our skis.  I wonder how that would affect our turns  ::)

Mark - it would have been fun to have you along; you just would have had to do an extra 50, or so laps to burn up all that energy you have.   Or - no, I got it, carrying 3 packs with skis outta even...
This Mountain Margarita thing is getting to be a habit 8), I still have some in my pack from Slush Cup....wish I could have been there.....Jerry
You 2 look like champs, nice turns ;)

It was good to see you out there on Sunday!  I only wish I'd had skis with me...

When we left the parking lot at about 10:20, that deer was still there.
i like your patch, Ron!  it's HUGE.  ;)
Sky: you're right, i don't think my legs could handle that much vertical...  ;)
I went up there 2 years in a row for August turns.  The first year was icy suncups.  The second wasn't bad corn at all.  Pretty accessible August turns for the east slopes.  Seems like snow conditions are a crapshoot though.  Also, the icy patch was much smaller those years.
Hey Dan,

The glacier features an icy patch that almost spans it near the bottom.  It would be very easy to climb with crampons.  I actually fell through some of this year's snow up to my thigh into a crevasse, but it wouldn't have been possible to fall much farther than that.

Here's a picture that shows most of the glacier, including the icy patch:

nice pic, is it possible to climb the  lower part of the glacier solo, while keeping saftey in mind?,, also how long is the approach? thanks

Yeah - nice trip Michael.
Great pics; nice viddy, great turns.
Way to nail the August turns.
great trip, michael!  though we missed your skimmin' skills at the cup.  corinne and arno must have been very jealous of you on the way down, huh?   ;)
Nice pictures, Michael, especially interesting to see the Sherman Peak/Boulder Glacier slide from the top - that thing is huge! Timing is everything, though it looks like it would have missed us.

Wickstad, the slide was mentioned on Cascadeclimbers.com, apparently a couple of NOLS people witnessed it, and John Scurlock went up right afterward to shoot pictures. We missed it by two days.

That Sherman Peak slide looks pretty significant.  Has that been mentioned on tay before this tr?
(or anywhere else for that matter)?
Despite the normal winter, I don't ever remember the Roman Wall looking that bad in the past, even in August and September.
Nice pictures!
And good visual beta to extrapolate from, for those of us contemplating where we will get our September base grinding done.
Here are some pictures:

Way to go Tony! Taking one for the team and really earning your turns at the same time!
Nice work -- when the cups get that deep, you just call them moguls and pretend there's a lift-line at the bottom...
Glad Arno finally got to climb something in Washington in good weather! Pretty weird about the lost woman, sounds like a potential relationship-ending move on the part of the husband!
Hey Michael, glad you had a good trip with your brother-in-law, and sorry I couldn't join you.  Sounds like you had an easier time of it than the Boulder route!  Look forward to seeing the pics.
Great synchro turns.

...just a few bow-ties short of a Chip/Dale calender photo. (someone had to say it..eh')

Currious what the Joy-O-Meter was for your day?

Pin!

Yes, the Arc Angels are not much lighter than the Pocket Rockets, but my T3s are feather weights compared to T1s.  The full length 180 Arc Angels didn't buck nearly as hard as Marks ultra short 130s Mark may have had a more enjoyable hike but I had more enjoyable turns.  It all depends on personal preference.
Looks like it was an awesome time for sure!  Nice work on the photograph y'all!  Hopefully next year's slush cup will fall on a weekend that I'm not away on vacation  8)
What ever happened to the slush cup at Mt Baker by the old Austin Pass rope tow.  It was always on the July 4th weekend.  The last time I went was in the early 70s.  Soon after I heard that the Feds some how put a stop to it.  Seems to me that the pond, when in good form, was well over a hundred feet across, and deep.  People brought all manner of devices, boats (these were real boats made of wood or glass), rubber rafts, huge tobogans, and assorted Rube Goldberg contrap...
Wow, those are great photos sheispiste!

Maybe if you had wheelchair access to the course?  ;D

even injured, i'm glad i made it out. thanks to all who helped me enjoy the day grounded and dry (well, there was that beer ;) !) great to connect with old and new faces. it felt good to be shooting with both hands. here's what i got.  en...
Nope, that was a different Mike- he climbs quite a bit at the gym.

I asked Mike P if he wanted to come, but he declined- too much stuff to do ::)

Joe took Arc Angels in order to save weight.  Of course the amount of weight he saved is miniscule compared to the amount I saved.  Short skis rock!
Hey guys.  Another great TR.  Was that Mike P.?  Just curious.
And no pocket rockets for Joe this time?
I wish that i could've been there. I was too beat after a long hike, kayak and bike trip. Maybe if you had wheelchair access to the course?  ;D

Hopefully i'll be able to make it next year.
Was good to meet you David.  But I think Sami would have given the Seafair Hydros a run for their money, way out of my league

Now I just have to figure out how to keep my wife from seeing this thread... perhaps not the reputation she wants for her man...

Echoing others, great to put some more faces to names and enjoy some surprisingly good turns and fantastic camaraderie.  Thanks to the Kam crew for the bonus weiners.

Next year, I will be riding...
Congrats Jimmy.  I think you and Sam rivaled at the course speed record for the day  ;)

that was a great day. A lot more skiing than I had expected. Seeing as that was the first time Brenda and I had ever skied in August, we're thinking about maybe starting a TAY streak.

Who's got that shot of Kevin making that last run over the kicker? Hopefully the photo is as dramatic as the real thing.
