Amazing how things change in just a few days!  It sounds like conditions are quite different from our trip on Sunday- there were very few crevasses open (really only one large one, and a couple of little cracks) and although tracks were clearly visible they barely cut the surface, and we had relatively untracked conditions.
No worries.  If it's as good as FM, I'll be ecstatic.  Nice work on Klickitat -- we skied the sw chutes on Sunday and were revelling in the weather...  So good.
Hey Marcus. I'll let Matt know! Sorry about not getting back to you yet. We recently returned home from a long June trip. Unfortunately, those dates won't work for us (Sylvie or I). But I checked out the link you sent in full. Looks nice! Thanks for the invite, should be another memorable trip. I still can't get over Fairy Meadows!!
Nice work Toby!  Tell Matt that "fatass" says hello...  Did you guys get my email about the Sorcerer Lodge next February?
Right On! Skied a similar line July 1. Imho an eastern Sierra or Shasta spring ski isn't complete without a soak in a hot spring or a dive into a swimming hole.

[Edit: removed non-skiing photo to keep thread to three photos total. --Charles]

Allyson ditched you again?  Typical.  In any case, good pics as usual.  All hopes you had a good return flight.

Experience has taught me to be very careful when the female members bail on a trip.
Sounds like you guys are developing that same type of experience base. ;)

Great report.  Sorry I missed you this trip, Kamster.
Yeah I've taken to doing this too.  The original names are so much cooler anyway, and more often than not are related to names of the surrounding geography.
Nice TR and great pictures :-) ! These suncups look fantastic.

Indeed Sauk is always there...that reminds me of that trip a few years ago when we reverted back to Sauk after our midnight schwak up Eldorado ;-)
Username's right. Although I have wondered of the potential of the Klickitat Glacier for skiing (closer to the Mazama)!... I like to use the original names when I can. It seems like the right name to use since we have feelings of respect, elation, fear, ect. towards the mountains, much like the natives do. The name "Adams" is in honor of a president of the USA who never set foot on the mtn., and probably had never even seen it. The creator of the re-naming campaign (check username...
Hey there,

I am planning to ski the Emmons or the Fuhrer Finger this weekend, have Sat-Tuesday, but would like to do in a one day push.  Am planning on a solo but would prefer a partner(s).  Cheers,  cbc

i wanted that Ramen so bad!!
Fortunately for 15 cents at a convenience store in Concrete you were able to buy that cup of boiling water to 'cook' your spare package of Ramen; otherwise I would've heard sobing and whining all the way up the Sauk Mtn trail  ;), thus ruining the "romatic" outing.  The

"romatic" was the word Cass and i had in mind for the 4th.  we invited our other pal in hopes of a threesome, but only to hear excuses, excuses...  so it was just Cass and i.

Now that was a funny report! Nice work Kam.
Nice TR. She is smiling even when carrying skis on the first tour. Hope she continues to enjoy ski touring. Good gear selection, especially for the dowhill enjoyment.

My wife has toured Muir (beat my friend and I up) and St. Helens in perfect corn, but she prefers to avoid carrying skis. She is so much more sensible than I.

It is great to see a new ski tourer enjoying the experience!
Well done Silas! That looks fanatastic... I've driven past four times now, each time thinking, "damn, I have GOT to ski that...." only 545 miles, eh?
If she was still speaking to you after the first hour of skinning, you've got a winner!
Great trip -- the 7100 foot traverse out is getting a little thin.  I see why Kam called it the p-tex traverse...

And to whoever "volunteered" to polish off our second 16er of Rainier at the summit -- you're welcome!  Good skiing with y'all, for however short a time.

actually that's when monika started to sleep after borrowing my sleeping bag...

thought this could be a new technique--show up late, then crawl into some friendly person's sleeping bag after they leave super early ;).

But kind of unfortunately I slept so well in your bivy/sleeping bag, that oyvind and I started too late and couldn...
The ascending traverse might have been us.  We skied down to about 6900 then picked out way up and over to about 7200 on the crescent glacier.  Bill was able to pick a route through the rocks that only required one skin over rocks and one veggie belay...but it worked out well.

Steve

I think that's Klickitat as in one of the original names of the mountain:

Klickitat
Thanks toby. Nice job! Lots of people are skiing this line over the last several weeks. I hadn't seen this report. Way to go. Glad everyone is having fun up there.

BTW, did you ski on the Klickitat too?
yes, i too agree that it was a fantastic day.  what was it, about 75 degrees at the summit??  ;)  seriously, we should have brought our bbq up there.  next time.  ;D

As we did the traverse out, we saw some folks who were on a climbing traverse on a snow ramp that led back up toward the s. climb from the narrow snow exit that is past the left traverse out of the base of the chutes. I wonder how high they had to climb to find a continuous ski back down to the climb?

It may have been people whose tracks we followed on Sunday -- we...

no worries about waking us up...I think we prevented you guys from sleeping just as much when we left camp...

actually that's when monika started to sleep after borrowing my sleeping bag...I think she was very glad to see us get up and go.  In addition to heavier skis, maybe bringing a light down bag would be a good idea  :)
Cool pics Kam and K Wu! and great seeing other familiar faces there on Saturday!  That was by far the best ski from the summit conditions I've had up there (as opposed to the usual boiler-plate ice); the snow in the chutes was still ok despite being a little over-cooked and 'grabby' from the afternoon sun...

I wasn't able to get any good ski shots with the 'point-and-shoot' digital [just got the SLR back from being cleaned on Monday">, but a few other tri...
Many, many thanks to Richard and Carl for a great day of summer skiing- month 21 in my TAY streak.

Michael, i thought i heard you yodel from Mt. Adams.

Yes - that is what I hoped when I Yodeled my lungs out ;-) Though with the altitude it didn;t always come out very well and folks thought I sounded like a wounded animal.

Monika: great to see you on this tour - no worries about waking us up...I think we prevented you guys from sleeping just as much when we...
I suspect we were among the hordes who passed by as you enjoyed your beer (and warned some climbers they were descending the wrong way?). Sorry I didn't properly introduce myself.

I think we skied down the chutes shortly before you did, and a bit later I looked back and saw you on your skintrack traverse back to the s. climb. Damn - sounds like that was perhaps a better choice than our descending traverse - we managed on mostly snow for a ways, but then had to carry for about 1.3...
Wow ! great shots and good being on a mountain surrounded by friendlies
Cool. We were the last to summit on the same day. We took my 8 yr old neice to the summit (big day from the parking lot for her) and she skied down. Pretty cool. She did have to walk a section on the false summit portion which really iced up when the sun went down. I had a hard time making it any fun at that point. Everything lower down was great though!!!
Nice work.

Hey Skip - what days are you guys thinking of doing it?  If it doesn't work out this weekend (due to weather or campsite availability), I would like to join you guys if at all possible.
Since we had about 25-30lbs of camera gear collectively, there's bound to be some pictures. Here are a few of mine:

Thanks for another great trip.

Nice jobs, guys.  8)

What a nice route.
Wow, really interesting stuff.  Thanks for sharing.
This was quite a hike/ski. A fair amount of walking for a brief bit of skiing. Even though the  the skiing portion was short, it was quite sporting. Just enough to make the walking worth it.
Lowell, thanks for putting out the invitation. It was good to ski with you. Next time I leave in the dark and arrive at the trailhead in daylight, I'll have to remember to turn off my headlights.
Nice work! Even after skiing that line 4 times, it still gets my heart pumping when I look down that roll looking for the exit to the lower face.

a climbing party very early in the day had kicked perfect steps (thank you!!).

I strive for perfect.  Glad to be off service.

Did you ski the route as climbed?

Everything turned out much smoother and easier than I ever expected 8)--would have taken heavier skis.
My many thanks to you all for a terrific trip.  And yes Paul, again nice to run into you.

I'm sorry about waking you all up !!
Your group sure has the photographers.  Here's one of Oyvind with Adams and Helens.
I think you guys were just a bit behind us in the chutes, based on hearing rumor of your being at the summit while we lazed at the false summit.

As we did the traverse out, we saw some folks who were on a climbing traverse on a snow ramp that led back up toward the s. climb from the narrow snow exit that is past the left traverse out of the base of the chutes. I wonder how high they had to climb to find a continuous ski back down to the climb?
I can't remember for sure, but I think it was Amar Andalkar who posted about a surprising increase in snowdepths northeast of Baker and Mt. St. Helens that he noticed in his research (right Amar?).  It was also posted sometime about someone noticing markedly less snow on the northwest side of Baker.  I think it is a very interesting question to explore the mesoscale precipitation variations around big, isolated relief like the volcanoes.  Does not only shadowing but also con...
Yes, I was a bit surprised by how much Sunrise was melted out. However I was not surprised by the pleasent day my son had skiing for a bit with as he says "the big guys". Thanks for the tour of the runs we hit  Ron,, had a great time.

I looked over there on Sunday, Greg.  Scoped out both GR and Tamanos pretty good.  GR had some skiable lines on the NNE slopes but it looked like a hell of a shwack to get into them.  Pretty much the same for Tamanos; the cone is still holding snow on the N facing lines but it looks like a carry all the way in.  Who knows, you might be able to shoot right up there and nail those lines... us geezers don't like to carry that far ;).
If you decide to check it out you c...
It wasn't all bad.  I was annoyed to miss summit views again-- both of my visits to the summit plateau have been whited out.  This time I turned back at about 14K, being too far to the north and reluctant to cross untested soft snow bridges solo (which situation was of my own making).  I couldn't see slope aspects in the clouds and booted down to about 13.5K.  Preparing to ski, I dropped my skin bag which promptly rolled into a crevasse  >:( but then enjoyed a few good GS tur...
Nice work - sounds fun. (?)

I'm curious: how much longer do you think the Emmons will be suitable for skiing?  There's a buzz about trying it in a couple of weeks if the weather and conditions allow, thus the question.

thanks,
-s
Greg, I don't recall the snow coverage on Governors Ridge but it is around 6500 feet which is about the altitude of the Sunrise area.  The photo gives you an idea of the type of coverage at a similar altitude.
Zap:
As you looked south, how did the Barrier Peak/Governor's Ridge basin look, in terms of snow coverage?

Nice beta; thanks...GregLange

Was the snow level at Cloud Cap or did you have to hike up ?  Did you ski down Langille Bowl ?

Hiked up Cooper spur to 6900' and then dropped down onto remaining snow on the Elliot.  Crossed over the moraine at 7500' still on snow to Cloud Cap.  Coming down caught a finger more south than the main langille down to the Timberline trail.  tr...
Great trip.

Jill and I are heading for Mt. Hood later this week and plan to ski Snowdome again.  Was the snow level at Cloud Cap or did you have to hike up ?  Did you ski down Langille Bowl ?
