Hey there Stewie, your Dad is stoked to have a new touring partner, I'm sure.  You're getting into the best sport out there as far as I'm concerned.  Here's to many years of turning all year!

Nice pics Ron.  Good to see the gang doing what it does best.
Stewart, that may be the best "First Post" trip report I've seen.  High Five.
Looks like we may be able to spare you for at least one more trip  ;)

The weather and snow conditions teamed up for some spectacular skiing; the best ever for the patch this time of year.

Below are shots of Scotty lapping the rest of us and Jerry demonstrating his very best TAY form.

I wanna see a bear!!! lol  ;D
A great day on the mountain and better conditions then anticipated! It was for me as well my first (and last ;-) ?) complete year of TAY, I didn't really have this as an objective, but after Ron commented on our trip on Baker in August saying that it was a good way to get the August turns in I realized I was close to the 12 month streak - so I figured why not. Of course I thought I had only September missing and only realized a couple of weeks ago that Oct was missing as well...

...
We did catch St Helens blowing some smoke. Here's a photo. Soon we will be skiing that.  :)
Lovely pictures Jeff.  It was a lovely weekend. ::)Did you see Mt.St. Helens erupt on Sat afternoon or where you down by then?
We estimated about 16" of new snow with a nice breakable crust around 8500-9000'.  There was certainly enough new snow to completely cover some of the narrower gaps, while not enough to make a solid bridge yet.  After Oyvind stepped  through one we slowed down a bit and did a lot more probing with the ice axe.

October turns worth the effort.

Some Pictures here.

It was hard to believe such a change in only a week. Last week it was a full on blizzard  conditions and a week later, it's t-shirts and dreaming of frozen margaritas. 8)
Although the patch is small , it's steep and so much fun when the snow is that good. Hero corn!

Very proud of my son, he fitted into the "Paradise Posse" just fine. ;D
Thanks to all.

However, this warm and sunny weather must now come to an immediate stop and it must start...
Yes, there were a couple sets of Trab/F1's up there.  My wife and I met Micheal and Greg L on our way down- I was carring 2 pair Trabs.  My wife hurt her knee in July (Ice on Mt Hood) and is still milking the injury- so I get to carry everything; but her boots- a training opportunity!

We skied the snowfield to the left of the main track- 7450 to 7800????  The snow had been better the last few trips(couple months).  The runnels were pretty much filled in and a slope with no tracks...
Stewart, it was great having you along, someone has to keep "Scottie" in line  ;D.  This particular October ski was one of the best I can ever remember, with at least 2 to 3 inches of fresh over a very bullet proof base.  After several laps, there was still enough fresh left over for several more trips.  With the beautiful clear sunny skies and vibrant fall colors, it was a perfect day spent with great friends.  Thanks Chris for the never ending source of "...
Nice job Stewart, good thing there was hiking;)
Maybe Nicky can get out there with you and you guys can do your avi training together.

You would have been excited to see Michael, Patrizia, Rick and I together, probably the highest concentration of Trab users in North America yesterday (and two pair of F1's "to boot")!

Yes I would have been excited to see that! In fact, I'm excited just to hear that I was in such close proximity to such a group.
It seems when they turned on the heater for the water gauge (10-18), snow melted into the instrament, creating a false reading.

That being said, all the new snow melted in the rains of Thursday/Friday.
Thanks for the picks Jerry!!! ;D It didnt hurt too much it was fun sliding down and I hope that footage works out for you!! :D
I'm hooked now so i will see you soon! 8)
Here is Stewie in action 8) Glad to have you along Stew and thanks for letting us drag you across the snow ;) It didn't hurt that bad did it?
Welcome to TAY, Stewie. I'm impressed that you survived Mr. Jarvis initiation rite and lived to write this TR!

Too bad we missed you, Jeff. You would have been excited to see Michael, Patrizia, Rick and I together, probably the highest concentration of Trab users in North America yesterday (and two pair of F1's "to boot")!

Phil: There was some evidence of new snow higher up, mostly just mucking up the trail to make your shoes wet, though. Looks like it melted fast during the warm weather Thursday and Friday.
Hey GregL - You were on Muir too yesterday? We were there as well. Were you not courting your F1s and Trabs with you? Despite the vast size of the Muir snowfield, I'd like to think I would not have missed seeing or feeling the presence of an F1 user. My mind/Dynafit receptors may be getting a bit rusty given the early season.
Hmm... what happened to the 3+ inches of rain that fell at Paradise this week? ???
Doesn't sound like it resulted in much snow higher up...
Conditions like that call out for the proper equipment:  rock skis . . . and not just any old rock skis, but the wife's rock skis.
(As my brother memorably said while back East over one Thanksgiving for some truly horrible conditions on skis I had borrowed for him:  "These skis are perfect:  they're old, soft, and somebody else's.")
Lots of stuff going on at Paradise yesterday - St. Helen's spouted off, lots of big serac falls on the Nisqually, and our friend Magali saw a mother bear and her two cubs foraging just down from Alta Vista!
Well done, Jonathan! Am I correct in assuming you didn't use your new Duo Sint Aeros on that 7" of unconsolidated fresh?
hee hee, thats why I moved west last year for good. :)
glad to hear your ski season has begun.
My old stompin' grounds.  Good to see the early season stoke out of the Never Summers.  Send some our way ;)
Bony is a legit excuse in Jan but not Oct! Hope Ullr throws the PNW some bones soon...
the first on tay to have have a 1000 veiws,  thats surpriseing considering some of the descents that skykilo has made, it is an awsome pic though!
it would be a crime for any skiier not to ski it?
Wow.

Another first, Skipper.
There should be an award here, somewhere.  The first fiction works on TAY to hit 1000 views.  That outta be worth something.

I got it - I think you've won a free chance to buy the (two sided!!) TAY shirt of your choice.
Just go HERE to select the shirt of your choice.
i thought that the Arapahoe glacier was part of the City of Boulder's protected watershed and was off-limits to public access.  just curious if that restriction has changed...or was this a sneaky sneak ski trip ;)  ?

looks nice...hopefully the rainy weather in the pnw today will produce some worthwhile conditions for the weekend.
I was completely disoriented on the date  ??? because I was so totally excited about the new snow and coming winter -  Ive almost forgotten how cold my fingers were in my soaked gloves too.

Bet those sun cups will all be gone next weekend

Hi Dougie, we will miss you this season.
Damn, someone got the first freshies... Nice job. I plan to go out next Sunday and it better snows by then...
Silly kids!

Hey, some German guy just told me that there isn't any skiing here in Berlin and that the only mountains in town are massive mounds of WWII rubble collected around flak bunkers from the same era.

Jennifer didn't tell me anything about the lack of skiiing here when she suggested we live here for the year ???

Thanks for the early season report Alisa.  And keep sticking those mule grabs Chris, whatever those are...
hmm, yeah...i thought i recognized those pictures from elsewhere.  i was ALMOST jealous, for a second... ;D
Korup and Blitz, thanks for the company. It was actually Sunday Oct 15th and not the 13th as posted.
It certainly was a stormy day and much fun to be out when nature is at her fiercest.

I'm going to try Lincon Rolls with a switch landing off the tops of the sun-cups next time so make sure your camera is working  guys. ::)
Wasn't it the 15th? :) Well, I have never started out hiking to go skiing in a serious downpour before- it definately wasn't a gentle PNW misty rain. The skiing alternated between glorious freshies and sun cup edge skating, but felt fantastic to see fresh snow blowing through the tip cutouts. Accumulations on the way down appeared to be at least an inch per hour, so I suspect almost all of the nasty cupping should currently be filled in (unless it all just gets windscoured). Combined w...
You two get my vote for the TAY TR "Creativity" and "Entertainment Value" awards.  Excellent pics. (even Cass's patch shot)  Nice try picking a spot with no telemetry station... but... sadly, Paradise is close enough  :)
Attached are a couple pictures of Scotsman walking up towards snow... Still a fair amount of vertical to go before we can think about skiing: Rainier is pretty bare now. As he said, it was a gorgeous day, and I had great company. Can't beat that!
That earthquake near Mt. Rainier must have rattled Skip's brain.
Everyone loves a kidder, nice way to start your winter cardio training program  :D.
Nice try Skipper!  I'll let you know if Sky & I have it that good on the Coleman-Deming midweek.  8)
That snow was sooooo fantastic, I'm still amazed!  I must say I was rather concerned that we'd only be skiing a relic snow patch in the rain, but that unexpected deep powder treat made it all worthwhile!    ;)
Huh?  ??? How high did you go?  I could not ski cuz the kid had a soocer game in Sunnyside, but there was warm rain going over chinook this morning.  The pics you had were amazing considering the weather at the pass.  If you're not snowing us, kudos for the freshies!
Looks like it was deep! Nice report!

I myself was turned back due to the climax slides thundering down around us in the Glacier Peak area.

;)

-Matt
I am flattered,as a relative newbie to the turns all year world, that a patch of snow should bear my name. And to be so designated by a nine year veteran increases the honour. I am not very familiar with Rainier, but there has to be a number of runs affiliated with Ron Jarvis, since I've heard that he is familiar with every skiable nook and cranny on the mountain.
Zaba zaba zaba zoo.  Secret white room alakazoo!

i made 18 turns total...

You've got everyone in Midlothian beat except maybe your roommate. That guy in the Corvette has a lot of nerve parking next to a group of backcountry skiers!
Kam - GREAT pictures!  Beautiful colors!  We missed you and Allyson at the course improvements workshop for Glacier Skiing/Snowboarding and Crevasse Rescue course.  I'll send out a summary of the accepted improvements.
