Bob, It was great meeting you - we enjoyed your company . Sorry we couldn't hang all day. What a cool day it was though- we are truly lucky to live in such a special place . Hope to see you in the hills again, maybe we can share some Porter this time ! September turns are in - Yes !!
Good to see ya got 34 months Scotty.
Nice Picture Ron!
Yes that cloud of dust was pretty significant as Ron's picture illustrates.
I did hear some significant noise that is what drew my attention to the mountain only to see the 5000 foot dust cloud.

Well the snow on the Ohanapecosh GL was more of my focus and the varied cravases all over the glaciers. The Fryingpan seems to be a bit of a haul  ??? and there is skiable terrain for the hardy.

I think that the snow truly might be pretty good, but ... only once you were well above Meany Crest, like 8000 feet. You'd be lookin at 7 miles and nearly 5K of gain just to reach the edge of the snow.

That's what crossed our mind at the comment, too, Wolfs.  One of us finally casually commented to him &qu...

I'm headed for California next week, and will be carrying skis.  Thanks for the reminder to not even bother in the absence of fresh snowfall.  FWIW, I've tried to ski neve penitentes (locals seem to call them "shingles") like those you describe high above Clear Creek in June, and have skied foot-deep windblown powder on Hotlum-Wintun in mid-September.
Great job. Makes me wish I had attended. Not to mention that 'when u were mine' is one of my all time fave songs!

I need to find a certain Whippet which has been lying there for 2 years (if someone hasn't already taken it).  More melted out = more chance of finding it, hopefully.

I can't imagine it still being there, Phil...it's a pretty popular place.
Great work there Phil! I haven't had time to even look at my film so thanks for getting it done ,very fun!...Jerry

Works ok on one of my XP / IE6 machines -- "A Vista Moment"
A rockin' viddy, Phil.
Very nice work.  Thanks for memorializing such a fun day.
Nice work Phil.
Fun to relive the day from your fine camera and editing work.
Great shots of the jumps.

It was fun to finally meet the authors of many exciting tour reports.
Keep the good work!
Joe
As always, nice work Phil.  ;)
It had a "snout" below cat-eye lake up until a few years ago - although that may just have been from a few seasons of above average snowfall around 1999.  I'd be curious to see pics from the 1990's.
Couldn't get a link to work -sorry- check out the University of Washington Digital Collection, go to advanced search, select all fields and type in Spray Park.  There are 3 pages with several photos looking at the Flett and the headwall from across the park - one taken on August 7, 1912 and another circa 1896.  It's a little depressing but fascinating nonetheless - it appears the Flett had a substantial snout well below Cat Eye Lake. Let it snow....a lot....

You have to click the link he posted and then you see the link with the .wmv file.  That you can right click and save target as.
;D very fun video Phil, nice capture of the whole day, "Dollie" ;) even managed to get in a few runs too.
A wee bit of thread drift- I was in the N Cascades a few weekends ago, climbing Black Peak. The topos showed a huge glacier on the slopes (the Lewis)- when we got to the cirque, it was bare.  The toe of the moraine was masssive- probably 60 feet tall, and then there was just this enormous empty glacial valley, with a few tiny snow patches WAY at the far end.  :(
Really don't want to turn this into a GW diatribe. Just amazing to see that first hand; there quite a bit on the w...

Thanks... looks like it still has its annual snowcover.
But the bottom part of the Flett is pretty much gone... each year since I've been there, it gets dramatically smaller  :(  I remember just a few years ago it gave 800 feet of skiing below the headwall, even when the headwall had melted off all its seasonal snow.
Phil, I added a few more pictures to my flickr set including these.

Bill,

I think we talked with you in the parking lot of Timberline on Monday.  I was with Todd (tele skiier) and I was packing a snowboard.  We left the parking lot around 7:15.  It was nice to see you.........

Matt
Nice report, Bill, and great pictures.
It's great to see another about to pass the milestone.
Looks like your October turns are all but in the bag as it is looking like TIMBERLINE will again be open, even if we don't see freshies by then.

We could see from a distance that a party was climbing it as if it were ice (climbing belay to belay, but could not see from afar what technique they were using to climb or place pro.) Overall it did not have the immediate surface appearance of hard gray/white/blue ice like the flat parts, and no runnels. Much of the center looked like it was still snow, perhaps because didn't get into the sun until about 1:30 in the afternoon and is actually retaining older snow and or the few inches of Th...
Did you happen to see the Flett headwall?  Is it all ice?
where were ya surfin' Matt?

Marcus' teledaddies pretty much let him walk on water...i need to bring fatter skis next year.

And no flippy-flips by me...I'll only go head over heels into neck deep Fairy Meadows powder (one of these days I might even try it with skis on  ;) )
though if you ever see me surf you'll see me flip plenty of times when I get put through the washing machine.

Nice report Jeff,

I figured there were some TAY'ers up there.  We would've stayed around for another run but had other commitments for the afternoon.  By the way, what a difference a year makes in snow conditions (re/last Sept.) :)
Thanks for the update Jeff.  May be heading to the Palmer for those Sep turns next weekend!
nice trip Cass!  thanks for sending the pics back home while with the Kiwi's and down under....

The snow cover was thin

but are you sure you weren't really in Virginia visiting Kam and Ally  ;)
sweet dood, looks like there wasn't much avy danger issues on that trek!  ::)
Nice. We were next to you riding the lifts to get Sept in:

Sorry to have missed it...looked like a sweet time...but surf was calling my name.

Did Marcus set off a tidal wave when he fell in???

I hope Pete pulled one of these again

Korup - thanks for the report.  I am eager for reports of some fresh snow on Muir.

Que es sastrugi?...

Sastrugi or zastrugi are sharp irregular grooves or ridges formed on a snow surface by wind erosion and deposition, and found in polar and temperate snow regions [such as the Muir Snowfield  ;)">.
Que es sastrugi?

Please ignore my ignorance...i am new to this Sept jonse'n stuff.

Are bushes part of the continuum?
They were on some of the runs at the Thredbo ski area  ;)

The remaining snowpack in the Snowy Mtns had been melting fast (a big rain storm the previous week had 'washed away' much of the snow below ~5,000-ft). Though it doesn't look like it in the photos, there was continous snow down to the river on a shaded south-...
Wow - this looks sooo nice - we are all jealous here - with all this snow I am really surprised you were the only BC skier over there :-)...

A continuous stretch of snow below the foot path allowed me to ski down to the Thredbo River bed.

Are bushes part of the continuum?
TAY dictionary-

Cooler: Noun; variant of the more popular term couloir.  A steep, rocky defile with a thin ribbon of snow down the middle.  After skiing or snowboarding to the base of the snow, you will find a six-pack of good beer just melting out.  (unless I was there first.)

Isn't it spring there? Is that all the snow they got?
Yes, but the coverage is a little better up higher.  According to the locals, Australia has had a poor snow year (in vast contrast to New Zealand which currently has one of its deepest snowpacks in many years).  Nonetheless I found the snow coverage in Australia to be adequate  :).
Many Australians...
Sounds like a damn fun time!!   Sigh.. yesterday was my last chance to skip out on work and get in some August turns to work on becoming a "ski streaker".   ;D   Oh well, I did get in nine ski months in a row, before August.... longer streak by far than I've ever had.  Maybe next summer I'll be more motivated to hike long distances with skis on my back.    8)  Actually last weekend I went to Whistler and I was totally wishing I'd brought the skis, but we had fun mountain...
Way to get it done, Cass! Isn't it spring there? Is that all the snow they got?
now that looks like Virginia... 8)
It's not even September here yet, Cass!
Way to get a jump on those September turns, mate!

Looks like too much fun.  ;D

Snoslut, thanks for the invite. Too bad the date didn't work with our Washington road trip schedule.  We were living the high life in Victoria on Sunday.

The Olympics were amazing and we are envious of your beautiful mountains.

Yeah, I think the Roman Nose is the main culprit in littering debris down the wall as well, toward the Coleman-Deming saddle.
oh, the shame, the shame.  JW confesses he made it back to the slush cup parking lot with unconsumed mountain maragaritas in his pack?  the rules are simple.  ski all the freshies - it will snow again tomorrow.  drink (or share) all the tasty beverages - the guvernor will make sure the liquor stores will be open again tomorrow.

I mean, isn't that the whole point of travelling with a lifeguard anyway?
