But with 400+ miles to drive and 7+ hrs driving time I might have been tempted to hop back on a plane and come back out to visit your buds in the PNW ;)
The sequel to this trip:
http://www.turns-all-year.com/skiing_snowboarding/trip_reports/index.php?topic=10194.0
... is scheduled for July 11-14.
Wow.
Way to tough it out 'til the end, Jonathan.
Certainly better than nothing, eh?
Looks like the patches we normally ski in October.

Glad you explained the presence of the telemark equpment in one of the photos. Your reputation is intact. ;)
Nice trip, Robert,
And nicely done viddy.
It is good to hear from more of our California brethren.

I don't think mein Deutsch has gotten such a workout since the last time I was in Germany (uh, two weeks ago). Danke for the colorful report; I may try to head up Alpental again before the snow gets too thin.
Hey Cem,
Did you by chance run into a couple hard partying women in pink skirts on 395 in Bishop at 1am while they were in the midst of a bachelorette party? Just wondering....Cheers!

Beautiful pictures and yes, firnspiegel is just wonderful fun to ski -- almost musical, though I always forget the name.
Proto-corn, on the other hand -- that's a really fun term. I'm going to attach proto to all sorts of things in my daily conversation now.

Thanks for the conditions up date Amar. I was just looking at a plot of snow depth over the last week at Paradise and it has almost melted down to the depth from last weekend. Good to hear this couch based measure of consolidation is consistent with actual in the field experience!

Wow, I feel honored to be in one of your pictures, Amar!
And, I must agree with you, firnspiegel is magical. ;D ;D ;D
...and your turns are looking good :) I'm surprised how consolidated things are. I was expecting to see slop out there. Now I'm really excited for the weekend.

firnspiegel. I keep hearing this word. In American, is that Corn??
Not corn, but actually WAY better than corn, it's like ultra-perfect corn topped by a thin layer of ice, which surprisingly actually improves the skiing rather than hindering it. "Firnspiegel" mean firn mirror in German, see
I thought it was not exactly corn but more that thin layer of ice that forms from water on top of the snowpack freezing at night and then re-thawing. Am I wrong?

Meanwhile, on the Muir snowfield today between 10:30 and 2 pm we were remarking how there wasn't even a breath of wind.

(Coming in, I had passed several climbing parties on trail; all had been turned back by strong winds this morning.)
Meanwhile, on the Muir snowfield today between 10:30 and 2 pm we were remarking how there wasn't even a breath of wind.
What a stark and sobering contrast to Monday and Tuesday . . .
The skiing today was absolutely fantastic. After driving through Amar's aforementioned cloud layer with a few sprinkles to boot, we emerged upon the glorious site of blue skies and sunshine. Lamenting our late start (10:30) but happy nonetheless, we skinned up the Muir snowfield in lovely conditions to arrive at a quarter to 2. After a short lunch, we descended upon our blank canvas of smooth,...

Nice Amar! That last shot is spectacular. Such a drastic change in weather from earlier this week. Nice tr.
Very funny and actually very accurate although my recollection was not" oh please come you are so cool" but more like" All the cool people can't come so I'm down to the dregs, you want to go?" ;D ;D
So late Monday morning Chris calls me and says something in his creepy Scottish accent like: "I think that we should leave my house at 3AM tomorrow and ski a few hours of June pow-pow at Chinook before I go to work." to which I reply something like: "No, that's a stupid idea." He begs and begs: "But Joe, you're the coolest and best ski partner.." and so on and so forth but I reason that I will have to either drive solo two and a half hours each way to ski...

i didn't want to get too off topic, so I started a new topic in the random tracks area about some other cascade climbing inquiries. Sorry iluka, wasn't trying to hijack your thread!
Not a problem by me on the thread hijack... I was wondering the day we skied the peak, what class the climbing would be on the summit block. Smoot's Climbing Washington...
Thanks for the beta everyone! I thought, and quite possibly because of earlier photos, that it looked like an easier 5th class...some people call that 5.0, some 5.5, it's all subjective I guess. It definitely looks exposed. Judging from other becky routes I've jumped on in Pistachin Pinn. area, Washington Pass, and such, I'm guessing it's for sure sand bagged and needing some rope. Looks really fun!

The wind was so calm at the bottom of the basin we wondered why everyone on the interglacier was mostly lying down, or moving at a snail's pace.
Yeah, I figured we were providing good entertainment for the small tent city in the center of the basin. I was more or less prostrate for a couple minutes while I added layers and threw on my ski crampons...

... I'd say near vertical class 4 with big solid holds. I didn't get far off the ground. Further to the right looked like a solid 5.0, about 40 feet or so. Definitely nothing class 3. Becky must be talking "old school" class 3! --Just didn't bother with a rope.

If the guys we saw hitting the S side of Castle Saddle read this I'd like to hear how it was.
Nice to meet you guys. We had a good run on the S side, especially through the trees which helped with the limited vis. We found wind packed powder up top with about 8" ski penetration lower down. Lots of new snow to push around, and really bet...
So that was you we saw up there - you did good to get as high as you did. We probably only made it to 7500ft or so before running into the spot where all the new snow disappeared and skinning became difficult in the raging wind on a splitboard.
The wind was so calm at the bottom of the basin we wondered why everyone on the interglacier was mostly lying down, or moving at a snail's pace.
We did a 2nd run on the ridge above the entrance to the basin, and that'...

Rob, Mike,
Thanks for letting me tag along, it was good to ski with you.
I can't believe how great this winter is. It's June and we're skiing fresh snow at 3k!
here are a few pics, sorry they turned out so bad but there's not much you can do in those conditions.

The photo sure looks harder, but Beckey's Cascade Alpine Guide, p. 130 says: "The final 50 ft. of the tower may be ascended on the south (solid rock) or SE sides. Class 3."
I booted over to it a couple weeks ago from the south summit and took these photos. It is the thumb below Rainier for those who haven't been there. 2nd shot is a clo...

That looks like it goes at 5.5 or 5.6 maybe? How long is the pitch and what's the rock quality like?

"From the saddle, we were able to keep skis on all the way to the summit, although technically, we stopped at the easiest of the points on the summit ridge and didn't go for what looked like the actual summit as it didn't look very inviting..."
It's a fun little pitch. So close but yet so far...

Scotsman and crew - nice work! I was just talking with my ski partner about teleporting between here and January - it looks like you did it!
Hi Lisa,
Sorry I took so long to reply but we had a great time that day. I slept very good that night. I hope to get to ski more corn like we had that day before the end of the touring season. Here is a map of our wanderings from Aaron's GPS.
Thanks again,
Keegan

Someone wrote in another thread that the fine was $100 for climbing above 4800' without a permit.
This is a bit of a dilemma - Personally, I feel that MSH doesn't use their money very wisely. But putting money towards a permit that one has issues with is your own choice.
Since the summer climbing season is the most popular, they limit the number of people on the mountain to 100 (between I believe Memorial Day and Labor Day). I never hit MSH during this season, but have a week before the limit went into effect. We ran into a climbing ranger, and so did a number of othe...

On the active.com website where you register for your permit, if it says (not available) next to the date, as it does for all weekends in the forseeable future, I assume this means they are sold out? And theoretically, the odds/financial damage of forgetting this and skiing anyway would be....?

Saw a few tracks on some side peaks but nothing on Deception. Also, nothing on the Needles, but there is also little snow there.
'Tis true. The prospect of having skied snoqualmie powder and summit volcano corn in less than a week's time is pretty nifty.
I think this belongs in this thread, just for Tuesday's juxtaposition's sake:
.THURSDAY NIGHT...PARTLY CLOUDY. FREEZING LEVEL 12000 FEET.
.FRIDAY...MOSTLY CLOUDY. FREEZING LEVEL 11000 FEET.
.FRIDAY NIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY...PARTLY CLOUDY. FREEZING LEVEL
10500 FEET.

unless you're looking forward to the imminent corn, in which case junetober is looking past the good stuff, while junuary seems appropriate for a transient flashback.
Junetober just seems more forward-looking ;).
Thanks for the great report Zap and the fun trip. I think we chose wisely. The freshies on Friday that turned to slurpee on Saturday were pretty well settled on Sunday. Fun in the sun!!
