This was a really fun trip! On the way up I wasn't so sure that the turns would be that good and was regretting bringing my joke boots and waxless (and "skinny") skis, but except for a short stretch right above Meany Crest where the crust of the newer snow was only sometimes supportive, the turns were great! Firn spiegel from Whitman Crest to the crummy section on the lower Fryingpan Glacier, mush on skier's left of the upper Meany Crest bowl where David took a little ride. O...
On a side note, thanks for dinner the other night.
Nice job getting that one gentlemen. Sweet.

I am certainly jealous I couldn't be there with you, but for the fact Adams was so pristine and wonderful, I don't feel so bad. Great photos and way to get up in there.

Snowmobiles are prohibited up there after May 15th. We skied there on friday and passed the climbing ranger on our way down. A really nice woman who had the unenviable task of trying to track them down that day while on snowshoes...

Brenda and I stopped below the col - a bit sporty for our tastes, maybe next time.
The col looks worse than it goes, md2020. Nice deep boot track helps. It's worth the grunt.
Nice pic. My butt doesn't look so big from that distance.
Joe, saw your tracks coming down to Cayuse Pass Sunday as we drove home. Funny you mention Shriner's views as we were there Sunday, and went all the way east to Cougar Sat, both from Deer Crk at Hwy 123. I'll see if I can get something up tonight; very spectacular view day! 8)

Here's a shot of your crew climbing to the col.
I thought snowmobilers aren't allowed to go to the top after a certain date, which I think is long passed.
Way to utilize your weekend. That's a good two-day showing.

Should I assume that anyone can get hold of me through the message service from this site? This is in reference to the garments we recovered yesterday.
I would rather not post my email address.

Nice TR -- sounds great!
And yeah, anyone who cares enough about their garments will sign up/in and send you a PM...

It's really good to be back and I feel much more at home on this side.
The approach is well worth it. Cascade Pass is one of my favorite places and the views are incredible.
A few more photos:

2. The gang just below Cascade Pass. The parking lot can be seen below.

I was there when it happened. It was skier-triggered from above and a boot-packing snowboarder was caught and washed halfway down the slope. He was extremely lucky that he wasn't buried in it and walked away with a scraped arm and some missing gear. The snowboarder was just above the rock when he got hit and I think the skier was in the bottleneck and somehow didn't get caught.

From my vantage it looked like if someone wanted to go up Goat Island the best approach (snow covered) is staying to the right by the bridge and traversing to the south end and back tracking up the ridge. What do you think?
I suppose you could go that what, but above the point where the trail crosses the creek the is a lot of avalanche debris and slide alder -- so it it might be a bit messy. Since the bridge is currently usable -- I...
I think we saw you guys heading up for your second lap as we came out in the open at the bottom of Glacier Basin. Looked nice! We pondered following you up, but decided to keep moving toward Steamboat Prow. Our best turning snow started from close to the elevation of Mt Ruth, so between conditions and relative solitude, I think you had a nice optimization strategy.
I'd go back to check out Ruth soon, but I'm happy to let the memory of the "trail" die back a little...

Hey Pete, that was probably Mary and me. We did a traverse through Summerland and Panhandle gap to the Ohanapecosh gl, then to Whitman Crest and down the Frying Pan. Beautiful day. I think we may have seen your group at the Owyhigh TH as we drove out.
If it was just shy of 7 p.m., that was us -- I think we saw you up above, on the way to Panhandle,...

I was with Spicoli shooting the footage of his descent to the nisqually chutes. I think I might bring an extra set of drawers next time. It sounded like an exaggerated shotgun blast, and its force and boom was so big I thought it was on the opposite side of the glacier but it was fifty feet above and to the left of me (and Andy). When it slid, it moved extremely slow and didn't bottom out for what seemed to be about 5 minutes. We were actually aiming to descend thru a chute to skiers lef...
Sweet. Thanks for the TR and encouragement to go do the walk to the pass - looks like its worth the effort.
Congrats on getting back to the left coast as well. The Sierras rock. Be sure to spend some time down around Bishop and environs.

SPICOLI,
thanks for triggering the slide. Glad I wasn't the one to do it and glad it was a remote trigger. Though next time, please make the whole slope slide. The snow underneath the slide would have been great skiing, but that only lasted a few hundred feet. We contemplated skiing it, but thought better of skiing the lower half of the chutes which hadn't slid.
Also thanks to Amar for inspiring me to milk the cow(litz) cleavage(er). Glad it didn't slide.

I was the one who remotely triggered that slide that ran the length of the chutes. I was about 50 yards away when it went.. making turns well above the main entrance.
Nice work Randy,
Standing on the top of Tamanos looking for tracks on the Fryingpan, to far and to bright to see tracks from a far. That looked like great Terrain over there!

I was wondering if the party we saw touring east of Pandhandle Gap had some TAY'ers in it.....I was with the party of seven who toured by ya where you were having lunch on Sunday. We were doing a traverse from Summerland to Owyhigh Lakes via Cowlitz Chimneys (TR and pics later today)... beautiful area up there....very cool views of the broad east facing terrain of Rainier.
We were in there climbing this weekend. This chute looks like it's still in shape (see the photo). Royal Basin is still full of snow that is corning up very nicely in the early to mid morning.
On the approach in, continuous snow is not found until after the lower meadows but it's easy to keep the skis on after that.

I'll have to ask Zach about that. That may have been him. But if it was, the parents didn't hear about that escapade.
Nice shot of Sherman! Me likey. Is Interglacier starting to open up any more than it has already? (1 small crevasse, just below 8400' - 6.6.08)
TY Randy. Good call on your part though. And, despite the start and though it's sad, it seems that no matter where we go now we can share "Stupid Moments in Snowmachining". Whether it be a cornice on the rim of St. Helens, a snow bridge spanning a large crevasse on Baker, or just trying to maul past hikers on a gravel road doing 40mph, they sure are helping to make the other snowmachine riders look REAL bad. ::)
Way to grab it! I think Ruth gets overlooked in comparison with Interglacier, but with the way it's rock ridges sit, it's more protected from the wind, but still accumulates some good deposit. And it sits perfect for the sun to hit it for some nice corn! Way to nail it!
Glad you had a great Father's Day! Did your son Zach ever meet up with some guy @ crystal on Gold Hills to jump a kicker over the maintenance shed?
I actually wanted to ski Kendall on Friday but it looked so melted out I steered clear. Glad to see you getting after it!

2nd that.
Scotteryx good catch. Yeah Forbidden, not Formiddable. I got them mixed up FOR some reason. ::)
"Surrounding views...
Formiddable..."
Actually, it's Forbidden.
With the North Cascades, they are almost always named something scary...... just not Pilchuck ;-)

We skied in the Tatoosh range and had a high camp below The Castle. We spent some time watching the activity on the Muir snowfield with binoculars (at times it looked like Chilcoot pass during the gold rush). We saw a bunch of people gathered at the debris field from that slide and followed it up to the large crown fracture. It looked ugly even from a distance and gave us pause. That aspect at the back of the Tatoosh range had similar fresh slide activity. The corn at the top,though,...
I wouldn't have thought you could ski to the car at Kendall after looking at Summit West on Thursday. Good to know there's still good snow there; maybe I'll get another chance to hit I-90 before it's all gone. Let me know if you want someone to tag along and justify you taking a slow pace.
Altasnob, were you with the party that skied the chute in the west rock ridge? If so, cheers on a sweet looking line/cornice cut.
Forgot this weekend was UW graduation so traffic through Seattle was nuts. Yeah, we were late. Baker had crossed our minds but then El-ho came up. Had to pounce on that.
That's a sweet crash pic, but if you'd said you were imitating superman and meant to to do that; I would've believed it. Nice one!
Sunday afternoon QB says : Alpine start would've been better! Nice TR's Stugie and Slut!
Good times other then the tent pole ;)

Not that long a day, 8 hours. In perfect snow conditions earlier in the season it should be possible to knock an hour or so off that without too much trouble. In fact in terms of effort it is not realy that much more than going to the summit, the elevation gain is about the same. I doubt if you saw our tracks as it was pretty icy when we descended the Reid but that is a great ski and there were no open slots on the section we skied. Nice work on the Reid, I would love to ski th...
NICE JOB wow what a long day. Think i may have seen your tracks down there on the Reid Glacier. That ice fall is sort of spooky (at least it was for me years ago...) lots of slots/ or potential slots... Sounds like fun but don't think I have the stamina to do that: "Man must know his limitations"...Dirty Harry I believe... Way to go-- that is so inspiring......
June 15: ditto :-) but saw one small skier-triggered slab on the way up today that a skier following our tracks yesterday apparently set off (he came down later than we did).
We were looking for you guys at Baker. Glad you got some great corn! Nice pics too! I love the North Cascades...such great touring! So I'm curious, did you guys make it to the airport on time?
When we climbed that in May of last year there was a HUGE slide in or about the same area you are referring too. My pics came out blury, but the crown was about 3-4' and it was about 600-700' across, descending a good 1/2 mile.
To underscore the danger you smartly avoided, please see a related TR at:

I believe that's the steep east face of Monitor Ridge which is an in-your-face candidate for a slide whe you climb on the Swift Creek trail. It finally happened. MSH can lull you into complacency. Your trip report and the CC TR pulls us back to eternal vigilance.

Nice work. Ive always wanted to head that way from 123 and your lines look like art work on the mountain canvas.
