Patience my friend, it will come... Smart to wait on that face. It is just getting better for awhile hopefully- it has to stop dumping (at least big) soon. With you on the mountain every day, I could just check with you for conditions if I had a phone number! Is there much sastrugi or is still smooth enough to get good lines? I still am thinking of the traverse in the next week or two... Here are a few more temptations to keep you going.
So, that's where all the pow from the NW side went.
Get better quick. At least the snow doesn't seem to be going anywhere.
Welcome to the group. Thanks for the TR and the photo looking east. Always nice to see what remains of the snowpack in that direction.
I heard the snomo's on Sat coming from that direction.
Yeah Joe long time no report. Stopped posting when it became more of a labor than a love. But some late season pow has reignited that flame. I might have to take tomorrow off to go get some more.
Btw, I love the illusion pow farming, ski tracks can create in making slopes appear bigger than the really are.
Well said Joe. Sliding is definately an art and everybody has their own strokes against the vast canvas.
Stugie, you gotta love those free refills. Remini...

Nice pics bro, good seeing you, Preston and the others up there! I think we were talking to Hannah? before you guys came down, and we must have just missed Amar. Way to kill it! Kyle and I saw your tracks (filled in a bit, but still visable) where you had told us the powder was good, and right you were! It was as if the slut signed his signature on the glacier! ;) Since we hit it later we dealt with a bit of a suncrust further down, but can't complain...it'...
I certainly wasn't thinking I'd every be skinning or climbing with those silly fat skis. Back in April, Zach convinced me to buy a pair (for the two of us to share) when the prices went down. I was expecting they'd be good for a few days a year of lift-served powder skiing. But they were so much fun that I bought a second pair. That's saying a lot for a penny-pincher like me.
Once the lifts stopped, I expected we'd put the fat sk...

We stopped at the site of Jeanette’s accident. The offending tree branch had been severed. A brief moment of silence was taken in honor of our fallen comrade.
Thanks for slaying the "dragon" :). Sure was thinking about everyone this weekend and missed being out there.

Doesn't seem that I am struggling skiing or climbing with my mid fats, so I am uncertain of why I need improvement and with the added burden of more weight and bulk to my pack?
Exactly, you may not be struggling but it would help the rest of us in the skin track if you where more burdened and weighed down!
I think you should be made to skin with Spatu...
You picked the right spot, Spicoli. We skied Fortune SE Bowl yesterday. Lots of coverage up there for early June. We skied directly off the Fortune E ridge, down the bowl, across the creek (skier's left) and down through the trees to c. 5300' before booting. The bowl should ski for another couple weeks, maybe longer if the cool temps persist.
Nice job Slut,
Long time no report!
I have to admit that pictures of powder turns thrown from a snowboard are much more glamorous than the snow cast off skis. But on the flip side, pictures of powder tracks left from skis are more lovely than tracks from a snowboard. ;) You guys do a nice job of making tracks that are very pleasing to the eye. But you know it is all art and everyone has their tastes.
Nice pictures, very entertaining.

Thanks for the post. It convinced me to give it a go on Sunday. Skiied from the top of Steamboat Prow with blue skies, little wind and nice snow.
Nice tour.
Your partner managed to time it just right and make our shuttle back up for Cayuse to Chinook. Glad we could contribute to the cause.

Ron had camera responsibility and I trust he will do no harm.
GREAT report, Zap, Thanks.
Didn't get many action shots as the snow up top was just too nice to stop for pics.
As Joe aptly pointed out the summit was really stellar with all the clouds licking at it.

Did get a shot...
Kyle, for your camera being a POS, you took some nice shots. Gotta e-mail them to me. Curious: anyone ever navigate the ridge from Ruth to Steamboat, or even off the southern flanks of the ridge onto the Interglacier? I'm thinking that an easier approach to Steamboat prow might be to assault Ruth, then follow the ridgeline as the skin up Ruth seemed more mellow than that up the Interglacier...

Sorry but I have to mildly disagree with both you and Joe, fat skis(100mm + by my definintion) are fun in the mixed conditions we are getting just now. The new breed of carbon fibre/wood composites are a revelation and negate the disadvantage due to weight when paired with some dynafits IMVHO. Try them before you dis them and don't close your mind to the new shapes . There's a...
I thought that was you Telemack!!! I was up there with my buddy (splitboardgraham) camping for the weekend hopig to get some goods. I remember thinking to myself that you looked really familiar!! Saw you in the lot about to enjoy your stout apres....also noted your track off Alta Vista. We ended up camping above Mazama Back Bowl and waking up to sun shine this morning....eneded up hitting Nisqually Chute. Cool to run into you....I shoulda said something!!

Joe: We saw you fellas ski down the King yesterday from the Campbell Basin Lodge. Nice turns.
Betsy and I skied down Rolling Knolls and Tinker Bell. Today went to Mt Top and skied Green Valley & Right Berg and then Tinker Bell and it had melted out since this morning. We had the Red Chrysler parked next to you.

Glad the crew had a good tour at the Pass.
I have a couple shots today taken from near JBAS to Chinook Pass. A sea of clouds were pressed against the Southern peaks surrounding and some times overtaking Chinook Pass. They were really cool, in some cases they looked like a cloud waterfall pouring over the peaks and dissipating to nothing. Fantastic views. Thanks for the report, snow sounds better than I would have imagined.

Hey Joedabaker, Brain Damage is looking mighty skinny 3/4 of the way down. Side slip or straight line? Either way, nicely done!
Actually the choke was approx 160cm wide. Thought of pointing it, but uncertain of rocks underlain on the other side, so stepped down on it bending the skis, tips and tails on the rocks for 3 feet, then continued turning on my merry way...

Robie,
Based on your other report, I was probably right behind you at the base area. I saw two people with a dog and they veered to the route to Forest Queen and I went up chair 4. Then went to Pickhandle via Mt Boondoggle to see what is left of the snow there. Good coverage in the NW bowl, but not much snow...
Funny, I was contemplating heading to the Tatoosh today. We probably would've ran into eachother again Iluka. Why did I stay home???! Nice one.
Looks like a nice tour - good job!

Figuring that the reports yesterday of impenetrable fog and depthless slush were just to throw us off
Actually it was a double double cross! We ended up at Crystal Southbackcountry in some really good corn and sunshine.
Glad you had fun too ! Your pics were nice !
Nice work guys...looks great.
It became obvious that Robie was putting a “spin” on the conditions.
Why would I want the hordes to discover the beauty of Slush skiing?
After Joe's couch report and Amar's report we went for the corn instead of the stale slush. Fresh slush or nothing for us slush skiers!
I really am confused now because we skied today June 8th in the vicinity of Joe's Bad Ass Shoulder ! Perfect sun and corn from GunBarrel chute westwar...

Should have gone today ... nice blue sky with cumulus clouds, very firm crust skinning up, very nice snow above Pan Pt., clouds were threatening to move in and it was HOT so we started down from McClure. Real nice snow, as we rounded Pan Pt. via intersection with the summer trail the snow got sticky; at the base of Pan Face the crust was breakable with a deep tele turn, skiing out was just simply parallel in sticky snow finally ending in mush. But it was nice to be in the sun f...

Not trying to rub it in, Chris, just give some useful info. :D Looks like Joedabaker also found blue skies from the same rain shadow at Crystal.

If im correct I think we talked to your teammate at the base of Mt Ruth while we were rehydrating. She mentioned the winds up there were rather strong so you guys had turned around. The winds were brutal near the top of steamboat prow almost knocking me over multiple times.

FWIW there are some small ones poking through behind the shark fin in the picture of your ski tracks. Can't miss 'em.
Thanks for the good info. But you can miss 'em, here's how: There was no way to see more than 20-50 ft off the bootpack in the whiteout on Monday, which was totally dense from 8000-9000 ft (with good visibility above and...
Its melted way past the trailhead. Only a small bit of snow left in the trees but the bowls and Ingalls are still good. Requires a hike to get to the snow. We got most of the way down on snow with carefull route selection but that will be gone in the next few days.

Son Zach and I were also out at Chinook Pass today. We found anything steeper than about 30 degrees was sure to slough 4-6 inches deep. But much fun was still had. We brought the ridiculously fat skis some of you have seen us on at Alpental in May. My problem was - how do you find (or afford) skins for those things. Zach used some cut for a 95mm waist ski, and that worked surprisingly we...
Yep, as Joe says we got a couple of hours of powder on Friday afternoon and then on Saturday we drove up to the pass and saw the fog. Joe says the Bad Ass shoulder will be clear, there was much skepticism.
We drive to Crystal, hump our boodies up to the Quicksilver grind in the mist and it's clear at the Shoulder with a big sucker hole that lasted all day over 3-way and the King.
I am now convinced that Joe has sold his soul to devil . Devil:" OK Joe final...

I don't know what you guys are talking about... it was sunny and powder at Chinook Saturday morning... well, as long as you were there ridiculously early.
I had to catch a noon flight to Chicago, so my friend Andy and I left Seattle at 3:30 am to make some fresh tracks. Got four hours of skiing in and made the flight no prob :-)
We got some sucker holes but that was pretty much before 7:30 am.

Very nice, great pictures, thanks for another well written detailed TR.
Awesome lines Dan! I can't tell you how many times I wondered about those. That's the difference between you and I- you just do it!! Here is a photo from one of those contemplative moments. I believe it is on top of your number 3 line.
