Way to live the dream!
You set a nice mark to aim for when planning a retirement!
Gotta go to work and fund the old folks! :D
See you out there soon.

nice job guys, glad you got some great snow up there.
Very nice tour plan!
Looked like a fun group and a lot of fun!
Should have skied the Tamanos chute on the way out. ;)
I have a couple pictures from my tour looking at the Cowlitz chimneys, that I will post later.
There are a couple of narrow chutes that are beyond (south) of the large chimney rock that go to Kotsuck drainage. The cornices may not be a big, but they close out to a cliff, so one would have to have a down climb plan for the rock or traverse skiers left ear...

Another creative access and great trip Boot and company.
That saved a lot of miles to get in there compared to md2020 trip a couple years ago found here.
Very inspiring report from a remote area.
As always, I am interested in more pictures.

It seems that the trees are real dense coming from that direction, did you use dead reckoning as a compass?
This is one of my favorite hikes in the fall, great colors on leaves and a good workout. As we mentioned earlier the views are spectacular.
Seems like there is a fair amount of snow there up high, from my vantage one could ski west from the lookout for about 1500vf. If one took the actual trail, I assume there would be a substantial amou...

When I solo, I often wonder what would happen to my dog (back at the car) if I didn't return...a "little lucky" indeed. The first clue (after the late hour) was the rockfall...must've been the karaoke!
Welcome to TAY, nice report. I couldn't see your picture of 7FJ, tho. I moved to Washington about a year ago, and yes, we've got a very long ski season if you've got the legs for it!
I think Jeff Is going to start a retro trend here. He never looks that happy when he's on tour with me.
The approach was certainly well worth the views and the turns!
Kam - you're missing Virginia already!? ;)
More photos for the picture pile.
Ice axe/pons were handy for a couple short, but steepish sections.
I'd recommend checking with the Marblemount Ranger station/Forest Service road conditions webpage if heading out there soon to see whether the Cascade River Road is clea...

Great trip! I had been taking my son out this year hoping to get him hooked on hiking for turns, but I never thought that my daughter would like it at 5 years old. She is also a Stevens veteran and probably would have loved doing the sort of trip you guys did.
On the other hand I had noticed the disappointment on her face when she saw us packing up for the trip and she was not invited. Your trip is inspiring and I will see if I can give it a go, if not this year, nex...

Lowell, I thought I'd respond since Kyle and I were looking at Baker (Easton glcr.) as early as the 8 & 9 because the forecast then said sunny all weekend. We were a bit worried about too much sun on a S exposure so we kept an eye on freezing levels, which appeared to be just shy of where things climbed to in May. After hearing a report of rain at 6100' from Thursday, and checking the weather and seeing partly sunny Saturday with clearing Friday, we decided...
Nice gettin'! There's some really good natural halfs on the worm flows! Looks like a great trip!
You' a pack animal. I rode lifts on skinny teles 18 years ago carrying my boy when he was 2-1/2, and it worked me.
I thought it might be worthwhile to capture the NWAC avalanche statement that preceded these avalanches. This one was issued on Tuesday, 6/10/08. It appears that this statement was replaced by the generic spring statement on Thursday, 6/12/08.

Thanks, Ron! It's good to be back. We missed everyone too. Maintaining T-A-Y from Virginia was a bit of a challenge the past 2.833 years. But I can put it behind me now....
jjabodee: we started skinning at the end of the road (trailhead). The 4-mile walk to the trailhead went fast. You can skin 99% of the route. There's one small section below the pass that requires booting. Some of us booted because skins were slipping on steeper slopes with soft snow.

Nice lycra!
I think I have a pair in navy blue with a white stripe.
Looks like you folks had some awesome turns!

Lesson learned, Obi-one ;) And I'm the Jerk- I almost killed a guy.....
it definetly was a little late, jerk. :)

I can't help but say it: 4 am sounds really late to me for expected conditions on Rainier last weekend. Timing is everything with a spring snowpack, especially south-facing.
I think I've always left (or intended to leave) around midnight for those south side routes.
Sorry if I'm coming across as preachy. Oh well call me a jerk.

That slope above the bergschrund on the Wilson HW is absolutely classic.
6 feet at it's deep point, mostly averaging between 1 and 2 feet, a little deeper than the one Ryan triggered, bad at estimations, but it was pherhaps 300' across.
We remote triggered some avi's around Mount Adams. They were the loudest wumphs I've ever heard, traveling far up the mountain. Very disconcerting to see the mountain slide 100's of feet away, when you are on flat terrain.
Did you mean 6 inch slabs or 6 foot. If the latter, dang. Glad everyone is fine.

Great effort - and cool pics! Right on guys.
Nice boot -- it's so cool to see all the other spots in your first picture that I now recognize a little better from our Summerland tour Sunday (and all the other TRs from that general area). So much good stuff to be had.
nice one. A few of us made to that peak - I didn't know it was called Cougar Pk - a couple years ago. We basically followed the PCT from Chinook Pass and back. Long day but not too bad. We made summit, but only skied from below that steep pitch, as it was kind of melted out at that spot.
Keith, thanks for the boot pack up both cols. Jill and I were touring Unicorn on Monday. Congrats on surviving to enjoy your retirement. I retired 7 years ago at age 54 and wish I stopped sooner. Midweek skiing is wonderful. ;D
Great trip!
When did you actually get to skin? Is it boot pack 4 miles on the road and then ski from the Trail Head? One photo shows bootpacking well above the pass. Is this doable all in one day with an early start from the road?
I am considering an early Saturday morning start (even camping at the car on Friday night)-- do you think the conditions have held up?
Thanks for any info!

Great photos and trip report Lowell. This is a huge improvement over our route. Skiing from Sherman Peak to the trailhead without skins sounds dreamy!
It's better than jogging isnt it Anita? 8)
Great trip, report and pics Lowell. Glad it all went so well for you guys. Was interested in your decisions to rope up (or not) for some of the glacier travel after all the recent discussions. Nice choice to go to the top of Sherman. Sounds like great potential for a Mt Paradisio style rando course? :)
Nice trip. Seems like we thought alike for the weekend.
Great stuff Lowell, thanks for posting the details of both the old and new orbits...
VERY nice trip report Zap, and the ski pole repair shot was magical! It was indeed a magical day and I hope Monday was equal. Thanks again to Jeanette and Garfunkel for route planning and execution. Great day, great company!
It would have been great to meet you up there! Nice tour, and what a weather window!
Jeanette - THANKS for the great trip planning and treating us to a delicious Dad's day dinner.
Only Ron's jokes are more colorful than the beautiful pictures that Zap and Ron took.

getting all the way around Baker with a single ascent and a 10 mile long glide must've been a blast! great photos!

Although Jeanette is on the sidelines for a few weeks, we now have a base camp supervisor who is providing the “Masters” logistical support. We no longer need to “vet” trip reports, check the weather forecasts, telemetry or radar sites. She contacts her “sleeper ski cells”, plus folks we are not supposed to even ask about. All this is provided in the spirit of fellowship and camaraderie. Are we...
Nice pics and a really scenic tour. It was really cool to explore that side of the mountain. And the snow coulda been worse, that's for sure. Thanks for a fun day. Here are Kirsten's and my pics:

Way to get out with your son, I was still riding the rope tow on the bunny slope at that age.
As we were leaving, the climber we had met told us to take it easy on the way out, that we looked tired. Initially, I thought that he was thinking of Nick, since Nick does not climb all that fast. On second thought though, I now think that he was more concerned for...
At this rate, every skier on the mountain Saturday will have reported in on these slides. Which is good. Speaking for myself, it's great to have all this data to correlate with my memories of the conditions that day. I expect to be safer for it.
NWAC: It's worth noting that the dire NWAC avalanche warning for Thursday was perhaps more relevant to Saturday, when things actually started to slide. By this time, the NWAC web page had returned to its generic off season message. <...
