Hi Jeanette,
Sorry to hear about your accident. Hope you recover quickly and that you're back on skis soon. With 8 weeks to go until July 31, I think your streak will survive this challenge, too.

I broke out of the cloud deck at around 7.5k, just below the top of Palmer.
Dan, nice job working around the frustrating weather forecasts and getting another big line on Hood!
Another good one Dan. Way to go... Thanks for the potential trench/runnel update. I've seen Leutholds with a pretty deep trench in it which would suck for skiing...Had that once on Early Morning Couloir N. Sister Oregon...hate to fall and get jammed in that thing....wouldn't be pretty.
Jeanette,
Jill and I hope for your speedy recovery. Back in June 1996, Jill ruptured her ACL at Chinook Pass while skiing. If this weather pattern continues, the snowpack may actually increase versus decrease by the time you are back on skis.

Mad_Dog - Very sorry to hear of your injury, and best wishes for a very speedy recovery and return to your ski streak!
Like you, I injured myself early enough in the month to have seven weeks of recovery before hitting the slopes to keep my streak alive. My shoulder still has a way to go before its healed, so perhaps when you're ready to tour again I can help to keep the skin track pace down...
Get well soon!

I know people have wanted to hit me with this in the past. I'm feeling it now.
GET A HAIRCUT AND GET A REAL JOB, DAN.
Damn I'm jealous.

I’m sure some of you have heard about my unfortunate accident on this trip and I thank Chris for not posting anything until I found out the severity of my injury. Fortunately we were only 1/3 of a mile from the car when I fell and twisted my leg in a 180 direction of normal. After visiting the orthopedic surgeon yesterday the x-rays determined that I have a broken fibula. I’m now in a hard cast from my toes to my knee and will probably be for a period of 4 weeks. If I can find some humor and...
Love the old pics and great one dan! I need to get back down to that mountain.
Dan, I met you a few hundred feet below the summit as I skied down from the top. I mentioned I had skied Sandy Headwall. I couldn't remember the year, but it was 1987. A friend of mine skied it about 1979. I have addded a few pics from those trips. I don't have much time right now but wanted to get these on before your post gets too old. The conditions when I skied it in 1987 (about 5-6pm) were incredible except for the hourglass where you were suspended on tip and tail, or just...

2 june: foggy, an inch or two of new over 6 inches of mush; when I got to Pan Pt everything was clear; when I got to McClure Rock, I could barely see my hand in front of my face; waited a while; it didn't change (probably did later in the day) so I skied down in the mush.
4 June, deja vu, except I never did see any clearing
Dude, I don't know if I made it clear to you on the phone that I'm a bit jealous!? ;)
Thanks for the report and good shots, I'll be heading up there soon.
my hip feels creaky thinking about it..... :)

russ-- Really, I should thank you; it was an easy track to follow up, and provided us with a much more sporting approach! ;D In alot of ways, that was the most fun portion of the tour--although I missed the views you all had on Saturday!
blitz--were you all the party of 4 in the white suv? We got back to the upper lot right behind you, if so... if not, it sounds like we were right in front of you. We had trouble with wet skins too--I used a good bit of ta...

Great work!
We did that descent route late season (in boots) on the last half-day of an multi-day traverse starting at Mt. Daniel (via Daniel traverse, Lynch Glacier, Hinman, La Bohn Gap, Alpine Lakes HR and over Big Snow). We too were in fog until we got down to just above Snowflake Lake.
Cool to hear that the outlet chute was skiable. It gets pretty confined and steep (3rd class) in places. I would imagine that the chute does not go in years with less snow cover, or, w...

The views in Sunday were all in my imagination (kindof like the symphonie that I hear when I am playing the piano). My yoga instructor would have been proud of me.
Dont have any idea what time we were in Mpass on Sunday. We had four people, we did not stop because it was kindof cold. Didnt get back to car until ~4:30. We did some lolygagging on the climb up to the last pass at end of snowlake because of the poor vis and problems with skins staying on skis. It was pretty and interesti...

Wow.
Good navigation skills, too, zeroing in on Morrison Crk CG from the Chutes with all trails snow covered.

Nice work, way to get after it! I am now seriously contemplating buying a plane ticket.
Are you guys on steroids or something!
Very impresssive, just one of those trips is a big endeavor, back to back, that's "gettin it done".

very nice, wish that I could have made it out there for something like that. I have been itching to get out to Van Trump for awhile now- maybe it is a viable option for this weekend still. Any recommendations/ beta if I do decide to go out there fri night, sat?

Made great time over the col and across Melakwa Lake (still solidly snowed in), but followed a sucker bootpack up the ridge south of Kaleetan... our one wrong turn of the day, which we only realized after a half-mile or so of 4th classing over rock, snow, and brush. Thankfully, you can't get lost on a ridge, and we ran into the S face quickly enough, finding good bootpacking up the fac...

Great TR and photos, congratulations to you all!
Sublime is a great adjective for Sunday... at times totally disorienting, at others absolutely perfect! Crossing Snow Lake was otherworldly; plus, my map and compass skills got a great workout! I thought I heard voices from the direction of melakwa lake--what time did you cross M pass?
Shrimp pot was at 200'... it's a fishing kayak so it's super stable. You're right about it being tiring though!
As for the all in one day thing, it was actually two days, but could have been one if I went to Hurricane!

Actually, I got to do this tour on both May 31 and June 1 with two different parties.
Saturday it was warm and sunny and we were gobbing on the sun screen. I drank 3 liters of water. And the beautiful Roosevelt Ridge and the Chair and Kaleetan Pks and the other far out places were fabulous.
Sunday we could barely see 100 feet at times. We used my GPS to pick the trail to the first saddle. The run down to snow lake seemed to go on for ever too.

Cem,
Looks like a great trip. Do you plan to carry skis the whole way? If so what other ski lines do you plan to hit? Do you have any pictures of your (bike) touring rig with skis? I'd love to see it. if you have a link to a trip blog or website, please share. Safe travels!

For those interested in bicycle touring, I've been following Rick Gunn's three year, 25,000 mile round the world bike tour through 33 countries, which he just completed last...

Nice Schwacking!!! Looks like the skiing was fine, as well...
Rusty:
A great time was had by all, because we were SKIING!
Indeed, good to ski with you and Joe, as well as to meet Mike Olymm. Looking to a few more good mornings this summer and beyond.
The snow wasn't bad either, eh?!

JW-If you plan on repeating this trip again, let me know! I'd love to join. :)
I had the same thoughts yesterday morning but didn't go. The section of hiking on dirt to ski is not a skill I have developed. ;)
Cem, Wonderful adventure. Jill and I skied and toured throughout the Sierra and in Argentina and Chile in 2005 and 2007. I would suggest that you post this trip report and subsequent updates at Telemarktips: http://www.telemarktalk.com/phpBB/viewforum.php?f=1

Very cool, the very essence of the Penisula there, skiing and shrimping in the same day. Bet they tasted good.
awesome man! coverage looks better than when I skiied it 3 years ago, that's a pretty nasty shwack out of Chaplin canyon too, I remmember trying to follow those same elk paths. nice work
Did you set and pull your shrimp pot down 250' from your kayak ?
If so, you have a strong back and stable kayak. :D
