...Hopefully there'll be enough leftover postage for September and October turns...

Gosh I don't know. Sounds like July 31 postage stamp is about as big as October 1 stamp last year. It was pretty small that day. Could the postage stamp disappear? I hope not!
Way to get those July turns, Mack! Hopefully there'll be enough leftover postage for September and October turns. And great fortune running into the Traslin's, legends who they are...Cheers!!

It sure is, mikerolfs! I validated it on Monday, July 29, for month 261. Still about 180' of vert, and the sunrise corn was a sweet treat to only have to walk 15 minutes from the car for!!!

first - super cool that you skied that great area. Looks like a sweet spot.
second - 261!? Holy Smokes! Your streak is old enough to drink!

Love the time lapse. I live in denial and choose to believe that next year could hold low snow through July.

That's a totally valid patch of snow!
Love that video snippet, thanks for sharing!
Good stuff.

You shoulda been in The Wall Street Journal earlier this month:

Thanks for the excellent photos
Bad news, good tour
no photos = fake news  ;)
@glowbug: Consider filing a wolf sighting report at WDFW Wolf Reporting Portal. I see there were 6 wolves reported near there on the 18th.
We were there on the 12th and briefly met Silas and a partner heading up. We counted near 40 goats crossing meadows and up in the cliff areas. Lots to eat if the wolves are wiley enough but I'd give the goats the advantage. Marmots or youngsters straying might want to be wary though.  If they're in that area, there are pickings to be had. Think by now there are stream crossings to contend with and we saw numerous lateral crevasses starting to yawn...it's getting sparse.

Maybe pack wolf spray...do they make that yet?  Or maybe pack some heat?

If it makes you feel better I guess?

Incredible story. Thanks for sharing!

How was the snow? Thinking about a trip up in the next few days.
Wow, indeed! Thanks for the report. This past winter I saw what appeared to be a wolf near Ashford.

I was a bit confused by "...they continued down into Edith Valley", tho, since Cowlitz Saddle & Paradise Glacier drain into Stevens Creek, while Edith Creek is a small tributary into Paradise River from the west.

Edit for clsrity
Wow. What an experience. Thanks for sharing!
Was on paradise glacier on 19th. Was solo except for the wolf pack I encountered. Very unnerving. Took a break at toe of glacier and then about 20 minutes into hike up open glacier, I saw 6 wolves come over from Cowlitz side. They checked out my break spot and continued down into Edith Valley. Crazy cool experience, but a little nervous of a close encounter.

Wow awesome video Lowell.would love to see the 33 min. Version...so are they using kick wax or skins...looks like pretty good glide and grip.

The Hesseys were expert waxers.

Also noteworthy that the ridge north of Chiwawa's summit was known as "Hanging Glacier Peak" to the Hesseys when they skied here in the 1950s. No glacier on that peak anymore.

A short film clip can be viewed here:

Here's that older picture, apparently taken in autumn. I think it was taken around 1900.

To my eye, it appears that there's a good connection between the upper and lower glacier, which would enable the glacier below the firn line to survive. That's been gone for a long time, it seems.
Gosh, you could water-ski on that thing.
Here's the full extent of the lake from the same day. A quick glassing of it on Google Earth has me guessing the lake is 2000' in length now?
I have several historic glacier photos that were forwarded to me by Mauri Pelto, head of the North Cascades Glacier Climate Project. (The photos have been added to the Mountaineers Archives.)

It's interesting to note that significant recession of the Lyman Glacier had already occurred before 1940. I think it reflected the passing of the "Little Ice Age" that ended in the 1800s. But things seem to have accelerated since then.

Sweet trip report and pics. Glad to see you guys getting it in July

Sad to see how the glacier has receded in recent years. Cool that members of this community have such great photos for reference.

I have two to add:

1989 - My memory said 30-40 feet thick, but I see that was an exaggeration:

This book was published in 1985. Maybe the photo is one of Lowell's!
Really cool/sad pictures. I'll add another from Sept. 2007.
Wow, thanks for the history lesson Lowell
Thanks for the old down valley photos and the note from the paper, Lowell. Good stuff. Here's another 24 SEP 2018 picture to pair with yours. As you said, lots of decline on that lower glacier.
Great report Mike!

You probably know that the Spider and Lyman Glaciers have hosted summer skiing for a long time. This article from an old Wenatchee Ski Club scrapbook gives a sense of how long. I copied it during a visit with Wilfred Woods in 2007.

Your pictures of the Lyman glacier make me think of early visits there. Here are some pictures from a climb of Chiwawa in September 1980.<...

Mike,
You'll have to write me next year to join. I need to visit that glacier yet ;)

It's on my calendar. Mar 20. Call Hummel about Lyman Gl.
Looking forward to it!
Mike,

New Zealand, South America.
That's great....thanks for the report

Boy, Nick, you hit it just right! And Randy - Sumo Marmots! I've never seen that behavior before. That was amazing, thanks for the treat of that video!
Wow that sounds like a fantastic day.

Hey Mike - glad you and Jamie ran into Paul! Dude is the best. As a heads up, you're likely seeing the seasonal sluffing of the lower glacier's névé snow. Here's a picture from last September 24, 2018. Note that it's pretty darn bare much higher.

I'm in agreement, it's in recession, but maybe not as acutely from this instance.

Did three laps on the moraine... Independence Day...what a hoot!!
Share the love, excellent!
It is "the story" that we appreciate and the photos.

Well done. ;)

I did this on 6/30 with same outcome. It was nice to head back through Knapsack Pass since one could traverse the boulder field on skis. Pretty dusty drive down as road dried out during the day.
Thanks for the update...think I'll burn some fat tomorrow😁
