here is a panoramic view of just a portion of the terrain on Wing Ridge. Wing Ridge does not require you to tour with a guide, and so my group was on our own. I've been touring here annually for several years now, and the terrain available from both the Wing Ridge and Big Sheep huts is incredible.... well worth adding to your bucket list, we still have not skied everything within reach from either hut available. Thank you all for doing this. Just reading about it is heart wrenching. I showed the picture of Monika's helmet and kitty on the summit to my wife last night and we both had tears. Both for Monika's loss and for the amazing community we have here in the Cascades.
Beautiful. Important. Thank you all.
Strong work you guys. The shrine kills me. Beautiful.
Beautiful story. Thanks for sharing.
Thank-you, Gentlemen. I can't imagine how hard that must have been. Thank-you.
Bad Weather, Beautiful motives. Looks as if the mountains themselves have been upset as well as mourning.
I'm moved by this.
A great friend of mine died via a cornice release back last October in Asia. I really appreciate seeing folks come together to honor, dedicate some time and energy, and retrieve what should be coming home.

I believe WAH's are also offering non hosted trips now.

Anyone can reserve the Wing Ridge hut (huts?); Wallowa Alpine Huts only offers guided catered yurt trips, but they are a real bargain.
And the terrain IS incredible!
Yes the Wing Ridge huts are availible to anyone -- Note that there competition for open slots -- reservations typically need to be made at least a year in advance.
I have a trip ther...

Let's start a new thread. I think we could use a NTN support group.
Sounds good. I just spent 1/2 hour spraying on the phone with Joedabaker about our NTN stuff.
Gotta go.

On the list for sure. Nice TR....beacon practice is always good. The terrain there looks incredible...do you have to hire a guide or can you have it to your own???

Love that spot..when its good. Brings back memories. Hoping that the PNW gets some snow and sends it my way. Some of my buds havent been out in nearly a month up there. It'll go big soon, seems to always happen early and late for Rainier....thanks for the TR!
Thanks Marcus. I just talk to Voile and they are sending me a new set of toe pieces. He said i had the first generation of switchbacks which were not heat treated. The new ones are and that's what he's sending me. Shouldn't break, i hope not.
Take care

I thought they might be a more recent hardwire -- mine are an older pair, no tour mode. It would be a poor substitute (though not being broken at the moment, maybe not). Let me know if you want them.
Thanks for the discussion guys!
That's very keen Dick, i like it, let's say that's what i meant! Thanks for the extra pics.
NTN... hmmm Kenji, i know it's a good opportunity to switch but i'm still not sure about all the pieces in the NTN binding, seems a little too complex and hard to fix in the field. I figure i'll have to do that eventually. ;) I'll look forward to reading the thread on NTN bindings.

I forgot to post what a great trip report from an area I never get to. Those chutes look awesome on the other side of the drainage. Bedal looked great too!!
Thanks for the beta. Now that you mention it, I think it was your trip report that originally put this area on my map.
I had read some not so nice TRs on the bedal climb, so I figured I'd try bedal creek instead...
Bedal Pk is still on my list, and hopefully I'll get back to it via the nels lake route soon.

Hey Kenji, do have the NTN? I just bought in last month and like it a lot so far. I'd love to compare notes.
I bought into NTN last season -- on day nine I busted one -- right before a hut trip as well. Rottefella replaced it under warrantee -- but it took weeks.
Now to be fair -- I was landing jumps that day and I'm big guy -- but in the o...
David, thanks for leading the trip.
I know it was a typo in your post, but I like to consider the possible meaning of "Prey for snow." Why else would I enjoy skiing in 36 degrees and rain?

Mack, I've been using mostly NTN this Winter. Kinda by accident, but I haven't be able to quit it yet.
Let's start a new thread. I think we could use a NTN support group.

Nice Mack (edited -- too many "telenames". I just bought NTN myself, but haven't mounted them yet. How do you like them?
Incidentally, David, if those are Hardwires and you'd like a replacement pair, let me know. I have a set in my basement.

Maybe, it's time to try NTN?

Good job, guys. I was wondering if you actually went.
David, you are hard on your gear: broken skis, bindings, etc. Those SS wrap-around bails are not supposed to break like that. At least, they should give you a new one. Maybe, it's time to try NTN?

Cool that you found this out of the way place and that driving conditions cooperated.
Bedal is a beautiful mountain especially in the alpine. This 2008 TR http://www.turns-all-year.com/skiing_snowboarding/trip_reports/index.php?topic=10193.0 from Kevin Steffa shows a sneaky route to go over near Nels Lake and then up into alpine. The trail is no picnic with downed trees and a somewhat flagged fishing trail, but once you get up to the glades it's not bad, and then up in the alpi...

Just another typically beautiful, sunny, mid-winter day up on the Mountain.
Well, it turned out not to have been just another typically beautiful, sunny, mid-winter day.
It's still hard for me to comprehend and come to terms with what happened on this day -- as I was enjoying the sunshine alone at Muir that afternoon, my friend Monika was do...
Yea, I'm just teasing because I'm jealous. Sounds like everything you could ask for in a b/c trip, especially during a winter like this. Just tell me something went wrong, like a wrinkle in your sock, or maybe your ipod battery went low on the last day. Seriously though, nice report and pictures, I'm sold either way.
As always JP, a well written report. Great to hear that your back is allowing you to hit the hills again. It's awesome that you guys hit the great powder when everywhere else around the state looks bleak. Thanks for sharing. I like those at NCH too-no advertisement, just a shout for good people. :)

My report was intended only as a trip report, and a relfection upon the impact that being in the mountains has on me as someone who feels so fortunate to get to live and ski here in Washington.

A wonderfully written TR and photos. Your TR was a bright light during these recent days of sorrow. It reminds me of how fortunate we are to live in the PNW and what draws us to the mountains. Thanks.

Great looking turns!
Not truly important either way, but I am curious about those "spooned looking turns". Is it the local custom to spoon for pow preservation? Or is there something about the nature of the snow that leads skiers toward a certain turn shape for maximum personal pow stokage?

Very nice! That's a great area, and seems to be about the best bet in driving distance right now. Glad you found some good turns in this crazy winter!

Was thinking of heading up there soon. Heard the MLK rain event also hit Jackson...reaked havoc in the Wasatch...is this the scary conditions you speak of??
The crust from that event must have bonded quite well because stability was bomber! I should have explained the "scary" better. The higher Southern facing aspects of sun crust and wind sl...
Sweet pics as always, I'm envious. Solo trips have their risks but are inevitably more fulfilling.

Sick. Glad to see folks hitting huge things in the current state of affairs up there. One good thing about midwinter high presure in the NW.....some of the sickest alpine lines found anywhere are skiable....nice trip ya'll.
Totally. Its never a bad decision to bail. Been a few times when I should have. Live to ski another day....its more fun that way.
Thanks guys! I am very fortunate that this experience only ended up as a learning one, and not worse. From now on whenever I travel on glaciers, especially ones that I have never been on, I will carry rope and insist that my touring partners stay at least within sight and hearing distance. It sucks to yell out for help and hear no reply. Thankfully though luck was on my side this time and I was able to yank myself out, followed by a nice semi controlled slide down the hil...
