Good job getting that one done Chuck.

Stoneman must have moguls this year with all its trip reports.
Sweet!  That's a very tempting line, way to check it off your list!

I was out in the field near B'ham all day and the only clouds in the sky were sitting on Baker and it's flanks.  The Sisters and Olympics were looking good tho!

Brenda and I were out celebrating our 28th anniversary

You guys are my relationship heroes!  Congratulations.  Do you skin together on Valentines Day, too?  ::)  But really - way to go on 28 years.  And did you retire Mike or are you merely temporarily slacking?  You're much too young, methinks...

Nice John!  Did you fatten up those skis of yours?

Hey Marcus, no I dragged my feet on spending the money, and of course now I waited too long!  Next year...All I really want is a free pivot binding, but my skins are going down the tubes so I thought I might as well upgrade everything.  Got to find a way get through the season not slipping back in the stee...
Always a fun read Andy! Thanks for pulling this off so we can semi-commiserate it with you!
Good skiing to be had in this area for sure.  I skied the line in your second picture earlier in the year.  Highly recommended if you are willing to work for it.  Endless potential if you're willing to go even further.....

Congrats!  I skied down 9-1-1 to say hello (Gary said you were there) and all I saw was 2 tracks leading down to Stevens Canyon--and I was slightly disappointed to find no uptrack!  midweek retiree and slacker

We were there, climbing the tree line watching you, and waving our sticks to get your attention. You never looked up. The uptrack started bit further d...
For those of you that may have been wondering...
Flintofts’ online Obit for Monika shows her memorial service to be scheduled for 7:00 pm on 2/17.

Good information; thinking of that area for Sunday.
I like the second photo---classic NW "pretty good".

Nice! Looks like fun. It seems like booting up just to the left of the phantom slide path is the most direct way to gain access to the upper slopes of Snoqualmie Mtn. Booting up the last pitch just before the west ridge saved us some time as well.
I only knew Monika through the glacier travel class but her loss has made me very sad.  It's hard to lose someone who shares our love of wild places.

Thanks guys for your efforts!  Well done.
Why I remember  way back in the winter of 2010 when the snow covered most of that alder! Glad you were the guinea pig for this tour, but sucks you had to find out the hard way. Thanks for posting, John!

Nice shot of Allen in the gate bashing stance. Looks like the camera takes some good (face) shots.
New on firm?

Yeah, was pretty stoked on how the pictures turned out given I currently know next to nothing about camera settings.

There definitely was a firm base underneath, but it wasn't really noticeable as you were skiing.  The...
Sitting in my office viewing this thread, I realize I maybe liked it better when you posted reports void of pics.

But I still think Allen's arcs are bigger than your poodle turns...

Zing!
Friends of Monika,

In an effort to make a slide show/video in memory of Monika, Khahn and a few others are collecting photos of her for a memorial servie/celebration of her (date TBA).  If you have a photo or two that you would like to share, please email it to Khahn at This email address is being protected from spambots. Pictures look even better on the computer screen. SICK!

Brenda and I were out celebrating our 28th anniversary over on the Paradise side. Found similar conditions but I think it might have been a little better. Deeper on most lower angle stuff, and maybe a bit softer. I always try to ski the Paradise side in conditions like that, thinking the south facing may not have frozen so hard before the dust comes in. Anyway, everything was very skiable. We we...

Dug a pit at about 6300 ft facing NE at a 45 degree compass reading and found pretty much the same snow layers a little south of you down here in the hogback out of wp.  The snow was about 4 full inches of pow and really fun to ski; very protected in the trees.
Nice... Allen's got some sweet form.  Great to see powder again.

The skin up was TUFF.  The rain crust was nearly bullet proof in some places.  ...  So the strategy became... ssscccrape...Skis off - boot pack for awhile, then skis back on to skin till the next ssscccraping backwards slide.

Thanks for the report -- sounds like a job for ski crampons. I think they're essential in conditions like th...
It's very moving to read the trip report and I commend you all for your efforts!  Beautiful picture of the shine.  Thanks to all!
Going down on both knees and Diving into the snow with both hands and finding her pack was one of the sadder experiences of my time in the mountains.  I wasn't expecting that.  The ski up was somber and the group was subdued.  We created an honoring on the summit in the wind and snow that was as profound as it was spontaneous.  Pure emotion does that I guess.  We all loved her and we left the summit uplifted by the shared grief.  She would have been proud, as I was, to watch the talented an...
The picture of her helmet and kitty brings tears.
Peace to you all.
I'm not sure what was more difficult:  being and seeing her during the recovery mission on Saturday or seeing her stuff on the summit of Red yesterday.  I just know that I went full circle on this (for support & respect) with some amazing folks on this absolutely mind blowing & numbing tragedy.  As Dave Brown said, she brought out the best in people (even each time in the multiple conversations/interactions I'd had with her since I met her a few years back), and this was never...
One cold night, after quite too much drink, old man Nansen came to me in a vision, and shared this with a smile and wink. He accent was think, and strange to my ear, but later that day the meaning was clear.

"Hvis du vil ha fyldige kurver, rengjøre tennene."
Thanks guys for bringing some about closure.
To the teams who have done so much and given so much to bring honor to our sleeping beauty.  Thank you for your efforts and your love for Monika.  This site and all of the beautiful posting has been a wonderful tribute.  Monika is an angel now. Love, LuLu
Yep. He brought implements of dental hygiene along on a sub-2 hour tour.
"clean teeth for clean lines"

=hilarious!

It has been an amazing experiance to see the number of people Monika affected and to meet many of them.  She brought out the best in people and it is not suprising to find out her many friends are also great people.  She was so special to us all.  Thank you Monika for your friendship and your friends.

Dave and Steph

The first photo is the group nearing the summit and second photo is Ryan carrying Monika's skis.
Ahh yes, Wing Ridge is one of my favorite places.  Thanks for the report Koda.

As a word of caution to all.  The snowpack out there is more continental than maritime and buried weak layers can be very persistent (much like CO).

The photo is looking North across the Big Sheep Basin with Aneroid Mt on the middle left.
here is a panoramic view of just a portion of the terrain on Wing Ridge. Wing Ridge does not require you to tour with a guide, and so my group was on our own.  I've  been touring here annually for several years now, and the terrain available from both the Wing Ridge and Big Sheep huts is incredible.... well worth adding to your bucket list, we still have not skied everything within reach from either hut available. Click
Thank you all for doing this. Just reading about it is heart wrenching. I showed the picture of Monika's helmet and kitty on the summit to my wife last night and we both had tears. Both for Monika's loss and for the amazing community we have here in the Cascades.
Beautiful.  Important.  Thank you all.
Strong work you guys.  The shrine kills me.  Beautiful.
Beautiful story. Thanks for sharing.
Thank-you, Gentlemen. I can't imagine how hard that must have been.  Thank-you.
Bad Weather, Beautiful motives.  Looks as if the mountains themselves have been upset as well as mourning.
I'm moved by this.
A great friend of mine died via a cornice release back last October in Asia.  I really appreciate seeing folks come together to honor, dedicate some time and energy, and retrieve what should be coming home.
I believe WAH's are also offering non hosted trips now.

Anyone can reserve the Wing Ridge hut (huts?); Wallowa Alpine Huts only offers guided catered yurt trips, but they are a real bargain.
And the terrain IS incredible!

Yes the Wing Ridge huts are availible to anyone -- Note that there competition for open slots -- reservations typically need to be made at least a year in advance.

I have a trip ther...

Let's start a new thread.  I think we could use a NTN support group.

Sounds good.  I just spent 1/2 hour spraying on the phone with Joedabaker about our NTN stuff.
Gotta go.

On the list for sure. Nice TR....beacon practice is always good. The terrain there looks incredible...do you have to hire a guide or can you have it to your own???

Love that spot..when its good. Brings back memories. Hoping that the PNW gets some snow and sends it my way. Some of my buds havent been out in nearly a month up there. It'll go big soon, seems to always happen early and late for Rainier....thanks for the TR!
