David, Eric, Dick and i had planned to ski Castle Saddle this morning but when we reached the Narada Falls parking area it was 37 degrees and raining. So we continued up to Paradise hoping there might be snow there. Nope, 36 degrees and raining. Oh well, we're here and there's nothing on TV today, right...
Actually the snow was pretty good. There was about two inches of new snow from the night and a solid crust under that which supported us well. We made six runs on the open slopes above the road. By the last few the crust was getting soft and i was starting to break through but it was still fun skiing!
I had a binding break (see picture) about half way through the day and had to lash it up with wire. (I carry the necessary materials for repear from many years of gear failure:)) It worked so well i kept skiing.
Prey for snow!!!

Good job, guys. I was wondering if you actually went.
David, you are hard on your gear: broken skis, bindings, etc. Those SS wrap-around bails are not supposed to break like that. At least, they should give you a new one. Maybe, it's time to try NTN?

Hey Kenji, do have the NTN? I just bought in last month and like it a lot so far. I'd love to compare notes.
Nice Mack (edited -- too many "telenames". I just bought NTN myself, but haven't mounted them yet. How do you like them?
Incidentally, David, if those are Hardwires and you'd like a replacement pair, let me know. I have a set in my basement.

Mack, I've been using mostly NTN this Winter. Kinda by accident, but I haven't be able to quit it yet.
Let's start a new thread. I think we could use a NTN support group.

David, thanks for leading the trip.
I know it was a typo in your post, but I like to consider the possible meaning of "Prey for snow." Why else would I enjoy skiing in 36 degrees and rain?

I bought into NTN last season -- on day nine I busted one -- right before a hut trip as well. Rottefella replaced it under warrantee -- but it took weeks.
Now to be fair -- I was landing jumps that day and I'm big guy -- but in the other hand I've never broken any other tele binding -- I used 3Pins, Chillis, Voile classics, Voile hardwire, Voile Switchbacks, HammerHeads and BD-01s and never busted them or ripped them out of the ski.
YMMV
Thanks for the discussion guys!
That's very keen Dick, i like it, let's say that's what i meant! Thanks for the extra pics.
NTN... hmmm Kenji, i know it's a good opportunity to switch but i'm still not sure about all the pieces in the NTN binding, seems a little too complex and hard to fix in the field. I figure i'll have to do that eventually. ;) I'll look forward to reading the thread on NTN bindings.
Marcus, they are the switchback hardwire. The kind that have tour mode. Do you have a pair of those? I might be interested in them so i can do a quick replacement for the rest of the season. Not sure i want to stick with Voile, i know of at least two people who have had the "hard wire" break. I have emailed a photo of the broken binding to Voile and haven't heard back yet. I'll call them now that i'm home from work.
Randy, (Randy Oakley?) that's very impressive you've never broken a binding! Oh wait, it must be my barely in control skiing.
Cheers, David.

I thought they might be a more recent hardwire -- mine are an older pair, no tour mode. It would be a poor substitute (though not being broken at the moment, maybe not). Let me know if you want them.
Thanks Marcus. I just talk to Voile and they are sending me a new set of toe pieces. He said i had the first generation of switchbacks which were not heat treated. The new ones are and that's what he's sending me. Shouldn't break, i hope not.
Take care

Love that spot..when its good. Brings back memories. Hoping that the PNW gets some snow and sends it my way. Some of my buds havent been out in nearly a month up there. It'll go big soon, seems to always happen early and late for Rainier....thanks for the TR!

Sounds good. I just spent 1/2 hour spraying on the phone with Joedabaker about our NTN stuff.
Gotta go.
