Way to go fellas.
Although Forest, I am questioning your choice of backpack.

I have been into the both Gardner and North Gardner a few times. Shelokum Lake is approached, as best I can remember, by traversing in from the east. Slopes above it are steep enough to only want to climb from there in stable conditions. When I tried to get into it directly from Cedar Creek the trees seemed thicker and progress ground to a halt.
The best way to get to the peaks is to cross Cedar Creek earlier (below the falls) and get on the moderate ridge that heads up the west...

This isn't nearly as exciting as all the crazy trips I've read about this past weekend
Thanks for the report. Don't think that only the "crazy" trips are appreciated. For me and maybe many others we just want to know if the snow was any good and an idea of how to get there. A few pictures is always interesting. Make sure you carry a...

Wooo, that sounds cool. Where do I get mine calibrated?
Here are a few more pics from the day.

Hello Larry, & Larry's sister
Thanks for this and your many previous postings! .... So I'll bite: how come you are using those ridiculously old school pack's we all used to value so highly?
Thanks much!
Thanks so much GerryH; sometimes I wonder about posting. Overnight packs – I could end up writing way too much on the subject. Both Jan...

A summit is no longer the objective. Fun is heading over the next ridge and seeing what lies around the next corner. Joy can be found everywhere, not just at the top of a hike or climb. During a tour, the journey really is more important than the destination....Brian

Finally at 11PM a monster Jeep pulled us all out without a sweat... I hate Darrington.
So now we know it takes a hill-billy jalopy jeep to "save gondor" -- good to know, and once again the outlying provinces seem to be far ahead in understanding these things.
Also, give Darrington a break; it's not so bad. I was up there for work a co...
I could probably get you up to white chuck if you want to climb it...

good to hear you got out... one time on the way to three finger TH in the middle of Jan, I came across a car that was stuck about 12mi up the gravel rd, in about 2ft of snow... looked like it had been there since november. that would be one long walk out...

Wow! What a great day! This is a sweet tour with two great descents, a nice peak tag, and some beautiful old growth touring north of Roosevelt.
Pete, your photos are spectacular!

A very creative tour. Thanks for the TR and photos.
I recall reading that the route taken on this map details the grouse-creek drainage route through the tree line. Can someone confirm? Definitely something I'm hoping to get better familiarized with myself:

I didn't go up and over as you did...but I went up that same logging road. Also...at least at this point one wouldn't want to do your down route ...without being willing to sacrifice your boards to a few rocks...the real snow started at about 4000 to 4500 feet.

Man, it is thick in there. We need a lot more snow for it be skiable outside of a skinny pathway into the older growth. As is, it's gotten so thick that it takes a really good year for it to be good down low, and this year ain't it so far.
Hello Larry, & Larry's sister
Thanks for this and your many previous postings! You guys are the one consistent window into conditions and adventure in the Cle Elm drainage, to say nothing of your useful tips and great practices! Keep it up. So I'll bite: how come you are using those ridiculously old school pack's we all used to value so highly?

NWAC notes that Alpy patrol reported multiple 12 inch deep slides, many apparently releasing even just as a slope is approached.
How's that xmas tree farm doing, Marcus? Are we getting enough depth that it's not just maddening to find a path through the maze?

Cool! I used to get out by moonlight all the time when I lived in Salt Lake and the mts. were close.
I found fantastic conditions on North facing slopes yesterday, fast dry boot top powder and at the pass too with no other tracks in sight, what a joy it was.
Note: As I'm sure you are all aware there was a lot of surface hoar buildup recently too and the pass has received at least 12" now so be careful - this one came in cold so that hoar will remain in place unlike previous storms this winter.

What an awesome weekend. I love this shot of your moonlight tracks the next day.

@jdustinb - Nice job on your summit! How was the snow on the South side? Have to say, I'm a little jealous ;) Nice 360 Panorama. How long did it take you guys Car to Car?
We took the Standard Route, I'm not familiar with the Grouse Creek drainage route. I would like to learn it where it goes though, I've heard its much more efficient.

Nice, I have been digging your recent condition recon off of 2.
If you want a one day epic with lots of vert from the same spot, here is a much better way to access the swath.

IMO, One of the two best tours you can do from highway 2 in a day.

I would say to be very careful to not block access to the church camp or space for the plow to turn around at the end of the road. If there's not enough room to pull off, please shovel yourself a spot.
Great work. Powder turns under moonlight! Priceless.

I've admired that cirques from SR 2 for many years. :)
yeah one of my goals this winter is to find epic tours with lots of verts within striking distance of Seattle that are 1)not mt Rainier/Crystal 2)not on the passes proper. This one tops Jim Hill I'd say for the area.
Amazing pictures!! I was amazed how bright it was with that full moon. BTW, the link didn't work. I had to cut and paste the address to view the pics but it was well worth the effort.
Cheers

Here are the photos from the day. Not only am I a rookie backcountry powder skier, but a rookie backcountry ski photographer. Or maybe the pictures just don't show the crazy good day we had. Thanks for organizing, Alisa.
That looks really nice. I got up there late yesterday and didn't have enough time to get all the way to Eagle Point so I farmed trees and glades along the way. SW had a slight crust but it was still skiable and fun, N and W lines in the trees still held great snow. It was snowing very lightly then. Staying in that hut sometime seems genius.

Got some more photos??? Thats a cool place huh
yes. very cool.
Frasier outflow was scrapping across the alpine all day Sat. Pretty unusual. Sounds like it did a number on the White Salmon. Your right,,, everywhere else was ah....brilliant.
Pete and Becky: back in the saddle again.....Great outing you two
I got to fly with Seamus outside of Valdez a few years ago. That man know how to park the whirly bird. he touched us down in some wild spots.

BTW, hopefully you bought Roman the buger and beer since he did so much trailbreaking! Sounds like a great guy to have on the climbing team.
:-) Thanks. No, he didn't buy me a burger, although he did have a sixpack in the car that tasted better than any other sixpack had ever tasted before.

Nice trip Pete and co.- pictures are great.
awesome pictures! im jealous. Well done
Nice photos! Thanks for sharing.
360 degree panorama taken from the summit on Saturday. We skinned up from forest service road 13 on the south side. We were able to drive to mile 1.7 at which point were required to park. One could push further if they wanted to in an AWD vehicle although there was a sign prohibiting vehicles past that point. The snowmachines remained below us for a good part of the day as we got a good jump start, but they eventually caught up with us. They weren't too much of a nuisance until on the way o...
Wow, you nailed the weather and snow, nice work! It is a favorite tour of mine in the local hills.
@lrudholm - Yes, the light up there is pretty amazing. Even in the middle of the night, the moonlight reflecting off the snow created enough light to climb without headlamps. Pretty cool.
@Chris - Thanks. After that much effort, not reaching the summit was a real downer, but like you said, a couple days removed you can really appreciate the trip, (the views, the skiing, the total experience). The summit would have justified the suffering a little bit :) <...

Nice!! As Scott said, that is a sweet line. I can barely imagine how much fun it'd be in deep powpow
Nice effort in adverse conditions.
How far up the road could you drive? Elevation / distance from trailhead?
A group of us were loosely considering a one-day summit attempt (or summit traverse from Coleman-Deming via Park Glacier to the ski area) on that same day, and wondering how much road we might need to skin up. But we decided to head for Coleman Pinnacle near the ski area instead, and skied several runs of blower pow on its north slopes. We experienced the same cold g...

Nice job and nice try. Cool reading your trip report (long version) and watching the video.
Baker kicked my arse last year (wasn't even a winter attempt) when we tried the all nighter so think I can understand some of what you're feeling. It took a while to appreciate how much fun the trip was in spite of not making our goal. & a lot of lessons learned.
A couple of us went back later in the season for our second all nighter and made it to the summit (j...

Reminds me of my all night trip up there last year. It was slightly warmer though.
Isn't the light up there in the morning great?
