Went up there today more spur of the moment than anything. Went up somewhere on Kendall. Ended up sessioning a steep section next to a logging road switchback.
Lots of long cracks, and even a 20 ft wide release that didn't go very far down the slope. I have a feeling snoqualmie mtn would have been better with its steep pitch.
Snow is waist deep. So good.

Great report. Nice snow in the Tatoosh on the 20th, albeit skied out. Cne comedy movie at http://www.flickr.com/photos/koelle/
What a cool place, worth dealing with the blowdowns over the "trail". Did you get any good pix?
Could you drive up the Mt Loop further than Bedal??? I know the recent lowland snow will halt most action for a couple weeks...curious about blowdown from the last big wind event two weeks ago. Thanks

good to hear you got out... one time on the way to three finger TH in the middle of Jan, I came across a car that was stuck about 12mi up the gravel rd, in about 2ft of snow......

So now we know it takes a hill-billy jalopy jeep to "save gondor" -- good to know, and once again the outlying provinces seem to be far ahead in understanding these things.
Also, give Darrington a break; it's not so bad. I was up there for work a couple weeks back and enjoyed the day visiting multiple locations. Drop into the senior center on the main drag downtown for...

I fear there may be more of them lurking throughout the mountains we ski.

It can be done as a long day trip - best maybe in late March or April. It certainly makes sense to camp in there and do both peaks.

The best way to get to the peaks is to cross Cedar Creek earlier (below the falls) and get on the moderate ridge that heads up the west side of Huckleberry Creek (this is a nice run in itself up to over 7200 feet). At some point we traversed left and climbed up Hucklebery Creek itself. The top of the creek, under both Gardners, at about 6,200 feet, is a spectacular spot. The Gardner Glacier Coul...

With an eye on N Gardener Jeremy & I left the Early Winters road end Saturday at 11AM & headed 6 miles up the road & Cedar Creek to the junction with the Shelokum Creek Valley.
It's snowing there now. I take it the road is not yet plowed past Early Winters? And how did you cross Cedar Creek? On a log or wading?
I've skied that...

This isn't nearly as exciting as all the crazy trips ... Exciting can be adrenaline pumping ... or it can mean spirit soaring with the aesthetics of nature in the winter time ... summit is no longer the objective. Ironic that you made fun of YN and I for buying FF down booties just last week! You should be aware that they worked GREAT last weekend.
Way to go fellas.
Although Forest, I am questioning your choice of backpack.

I have been into the both Gardner and North Gardner a few times. Shelokum Lake is approached, as best I can remember, by traversing in from the east. Slopes above it are steep enough to only want to climb from there in stable conditions. When I tried to get into it directly from Cedar Creek the trees seemed thicker and progress ground to a halt.

Thanks for the report. Don't think that only the "crazy" trips are appreciated. For me and maybe many others we just want to know if the snow was any good and an idea of how to get there. A few pictures is always interesting. Make sure you carry a...

Wow! What a great day! This is a sweet tour with two great descents, a nice peak tag, and some beautiful old growth touring north of Roosevelt.

A very creative tour. Thanks for the TR and photos.
I recall reading that the route taken on this map details the grouse-creek drainage route through the tree line. Can someone confirm? Definitely something I'm hoping to get better familiarized with myself:

Man, it is thick in there. We need a lot more snow for it be skiable outside of a skinny pathway into the older growth. As is, it's gotten so thick that it takes a really good year for it to be good down low, and this year ain't it so far.

NWAC notes that Alpy patrol reported multiple 12 inch deep slides, many apparently releasing even just as a slope is approached.
How's that xmas tree farm doing, Marcus? Are we getting enough depth that it's not just maddening to find a path through the maze?

Cool! I used to get out by moonlight all the time when I lived in Salt Lake and the mts. were close.
I found fantastic conditions on North facing slopes yesterday, fast dry boot top powder and at the pass too with no other tracks in sight, what a joy it was.
Note: As I'm sure you are all aware there was a lot of surface hoar buildup recently too and the pass has received at least 12" now so be careful - this one came in cold so that hoar will remain in place unlike previous storms this winter.

What an awesome weekend. I love this shot of your moonlight tracks the next day.

@jdustinb - Nice job on your summit! How was the snow on the South side? Have to say, I'm a little jealous ;) Nice 360 Panorama. How long did it take you guys Car to Car?
We took the Standard Route, I'm not familiar with the Grouse Creek drainage route. I would like to learn it where it goes though, I've heard its much more efficient.

Nice, I have been digging your recent condition recon off of 2.
If you want a one day epic with lots of vert from the same spot, here is a much better way to access the swath.

IMO, One of the two best tours you can do from highway 2 in a day.

I would say to be very careful to not block access to the church camp or space for the plow to turn around at the end of the road. If there's not enough room to pull off, please shovel yourself a spot.
Great work. Powder turns under moonlight! Priceless.

yeah one of my goals this winter is to find epic tours with lots of verts within striking distance of Seattle that are 1)not mt Rainier/Crystal 2)not on the passes proper. This one tops Jim Hill I'd say for the area.
Amazing pictures!! I was amazed how bright it was with that full moon. BTW, the link didn't work. I had to cut and paste the address to view the pics but it was well worth the effort.
Cheers

Here are the photos from the day. Not only am I a rookie backcountry powder skier, but a rookie backcountry ski photographer. Or maybe the pictures just don't show the crazy good day we had. Thanks for organizing, Alisa.
That looks really nice. I got up there late yesterday and didn't have enough time to get all the way to Eagle Point so I farmed trees and glades along the way. SW had a slight crust but it was still skiable and fun, N and W lines in the trees still held great snow. It was snowing very lightly then. Staying in that hut sometime seems genius.

Frasier outflow was scrapping across the alpine all day Sat. Pretty unusual. Sounds like it did a number on the White Salmon. Your right,,, everywhere else was ah....brilliant.
Pete and Becky: back in the saddle again.....Great outing you two
