The $50/per person/per night fee is a bit hard to stomach for what these camps provide.
lol...let's just call the accommodations "rustic"

good to know! Thank you!
Off to hike the Hayduke in Utah. I take it April is not a good month for good snow?
I think April is transition month up there. And the Wallow Alpine Hut folks start thinking about breakdown- but could be some good spring skiing

Hi Randy,
Yes, they just had a snow event while there. Â Never been to Wing Ridge. Do you have a preference?
David
Wing Ridge is far less of a schlep to access the camp , particularly on the way out. The only downside is that you can get invaded on weekends by day skiers.

As an FYI, my 6 trips to McCully were always the second to last week in March. Only on one trip were we a bit snow-starved for two days before it started to snow again. Powder depths ran from boot-top to hip deep (yea, that was the year I skied with a broken tele-binding).
Seems like it was always full-on winter each time we went.

Nice! I did trips to Big Sheep and Wing Ridge for several years. But I grew frustrated finding wind crust in all those big open bowls above timberline. On my trips we always found the most enjoyable snow below timberline. Looks like you hit the jackpot.

We spent 4 days at the McCully Basin yurts a few years ago. Our guide said "you can always find good snow somewhere in McCully Basin." We found it in the trees.

Was debating heading there for my SB this year, third week of March. I've never skied in Eastern OR before, think it might be too late in the season? Kinda depends on how the next month delivers haha but have you ever been that late before? Thanks!
This is my first time in a long time there. Havent, in recent memory tell you about conditions.

Beauty. What an amazing place. Great climbing and skiing shots.

Was wondering how the snow year there was looking - pretty good from the pics. Been to McCully 6 times, need another trip!
snow was good at higher elevations. Remarkable place. Dry snow, few people. David

Some nice looking snow and wiggles!
Thanks! It's the wiggles we were going for! Nice term!
David
Would love to see photos! Easiest way to post images that I've found is to upload everything to imgur.com or another free and public image hosting site, then click on the "Add image tags" button in the post editor, and paste your image URL in place of the pop-up text that says "PASTEimageURLhere". You can upload all the images at once to imgur or whatever, then right-click on each one and select "Copy image address" to get each image URL.
Kudos to you to accomplish the loop in such marginal conditions on Saturday!

Thanks Jake. That Cave Ridge approach is awfully scenic. Amazing to be out with the sun and views after all those other days (though with better snow) earlier in the season.
Thanks for the report, Jake
Meira and I took the Thunder Creek side to about 2800' towards the Middle Fork today. The snow improved a lot once in the near treeline band and stayed good until as low as we could go. But yeah, up high the wind really caused a ruckus: breakable crust, slabs, and debris from a natural cycle. Didn't stop a number of folks from putting tracks in the various couloirs.

I enjoyed this. Need to make my annual pilgrimage to the great white North. Thanks!
Cheers, just like I need to visit Washington in the spring for the volcano tour.
Luckily I'm up at Whistler this week. I think the higher stuff at Blewett Pass will still hold up for a bit more, but not the low elevation areas.
Wow - another indicator of the variable snow year - thanks for the continuing reporting from Blewett.
We found great conditions nearby particularly on sun shaded west as well as south slopes above 4K yesterday. I noticed that new snow that was only slightly slabby on the uptrack in the early morning at around 4K on a south aspect was easy to shear off of tree wells and rollovers by 3:30 as the sun was doing its thing. Even under deep forest canopy the snow below 3500 was quite effected by warming between 3:30-4 - the 4-8" over a firm base there skied quite well ("buttery" wo...
We drove through there this weekend. It looked very bare. Agreed that the season looks over :/
Thanks for the info! I don't see the NWAC observation (possibly I'm too inept to surf the web). I hear what you're saying about a large avalanche occurring on a day with a green rating. I would offer the possibility that this slide is in a different class of avalanche (deep and with a trigger much more impactful than a skier) than the nwac fx is aimed at. Similar to a serac fall triggering a big slide on Rainier or something like that. This is pure speculation, though, since all t...
Micah,
According to the NWAC report it was triggered by a pair of skiers. No one was injured but they had to retrieve some of their gear that went over with the cornice when it collapsed. The spooky thing about this incident was it happened on a day when the forecast was low/green and yet, as NWAC's report said, it was "a large avalanche containing most of the season's snowpack." The snowpack at that elevation was around 120", maybe more with snowdrift. That&...

Those cornices (and the carnage underneath them) always freak me out. Would love to have some general info about the incident. Did the cornice fail spontaneously or was it triggered?
Thanks for the video.... And sharing.
Thanks for the tip! Never used imgur, will do for the next post! Probably touring Hood this Saturday.

Sounds fun, Evan!
You should post some pics! I use imgur. Post your pics to a private acct there and then you can link them in here. They even give you the code snipet under "BBC Code". it looks like this:

actually you can ski via a 60 degree pitch from the skiers left around the knob just 25m from where you rapped. Â At the end you get a nice little drop over a grade 3 ice step!!

That's also the “ski in†entrance for extra spice with the right conditions
There were old tracks over there, looked a little exciting though.

Sounds like good times!
I'm guessing you rapped in the tempting eastern most corner of snot? If you rap from the cluster trees about 50 yards west (where there is often a large cornice), a 70m rope gets you into the couloir.
Yes, we were considering bumping the rope over to those trees to the west. Good beta, thanks!

Didn't think to get photos of NY Gully or other routes, unfortunately. You can get a general idea of how much snow/ice is on that wall in some of the photos here:

Thanks for the beta, but I don't think anyone is going to be doing it soon after that report.

2. Low avy hazard

3. Blower powder, with a firm-but-grippy crust underneat...
