Regarding the convexity of the slope in picture 2, it's something of an illusion. The slope is steep and has some bulge to it, but at any given point you can see a long way down. The second picture in the two additional ones posted doesn't trick the eye as much.

Yes, the second photo shows the line nicely. Looks about as good as it gets in spring....
Well done Stefan and nicely written! This tr gets my nod for best Fürher Finger report thus far  due to the umlaut.
It's a Pentax W90, optics aren't top-notch, but it's light and waterproof. Send a PM if you'd like the full resolution images!
Now that is funny.

Looked like a great trip, Ron.  Excellent use of your Hall Pass.

Matt - Kaleetan was a highlight from WA!
oh mucho grazias
That be our next victim.
To high jack my own thread . And as Joe mentioned Sunrise is going to be spectacular this year.
We climbed the Coleman HW yesterday (the 6th), to check it out for skiing. The route was in excellent shape, but we felt it didn't soften up as much as we would like for skiing. Must've been your tracks we saw while climbing up. We descended the Roman Wall around 1:30 instead. Nice work.
Sweet Trip!  Tough conditions for a challenging traverse.

Hard to beat a therm-a-rest and a bottle of whiskey.

We skied down the face, skiers right of the Roman wall around 2:15pm and the snow was an inch of butter over a soft but firm base, well worth the weight ;)

Saw several wet slough slides during our descent down, some 40'wide.

We saw you guys come down that way.  That's called the Roman Mustache.  The snow in the rocks at the top i...
I think I'd like to do more of this in the future.
Koda,   Good partnering with you again.  The spur, and Elk Cove truly are one of Mt Hood's gems.  Being in there for a second time only wets my appetite for more.  I can honestly say I have only scratched the surface of that side of the mountain.  I look forward to next time.  Rong
Good on ya mate! just couldn't let that one go for another year.

Looks nice!  I've been wanting to get in there for awhile now.  Maybe this weekend, but might be heading to Middle Sister instead.  Scenery looks excellent!

From the look of the pics, there will easily another month+ of solid skiing at Barrett Spur. IMO, it is one of the better trips on Mt Hood and the views are spectacular.

We were going to go in...

Yup.  That's Drew Tabke for you, pure class.

Very interesting to see Hill on TLT5 Mountains instead of TLT5 Performances with his Stokes!

He is on a pair of next years Carbon Titans...he regretted not having his TLT5 Performances for this trip though.
Pat,  that was a great day, but your descent off the tip top was the highlight.  And of course you know that I would have been right behind you but I did not have the right wax.  I also did not have my brown pants!  Which is why I carried my skis back down to the saddle.

The last pic in the blog is the definition of pure class.
I am heading up there for the first time on thurs. Just curious if you encountered any crevasse issues, was roping up the norm for the summit pyramid?

Great trip.

Retirement ! You're too young.  ;)

It is NEVER too young to retire!  That is like saying one is too young to start living.  Besides Robie now has a brand-new adventure/dual sport motorcycle to compliment his skis; I too got a GS motorcycle just before I retired--a fun, cheap way to travel.

Besides, didn't y...

We were surprised by the low snow, too, and that we could ski Smithbrook all the way to the Highway. We were also surprised by the absence of ski tracks on the road. Given the conditions, Union Peak, Jove, and McCausland would have been good objectives (and will be good objectives for a while longer). Interestingly we saw a  bear tracks in three different places along the route -- don't know if they were different animals or one intent on finding the best place to ambush the Cheetos on skis...
Sweet TR.  Thats a pretty wild photo of the crevasse rescue.

Thanks for the beta your group shared with us Saturday afternoon.  Saved us from the crevasse maze you guys got bogged down in.

Nice work.  The silhouetted climber at sunrise shot came out real well.

wicked! nice work bro!
Thanks for letting me tag along.  Well, maybe I should re-think... after that steep icy wall.
Guess I was a little grumpy at the three hikers postholing in the sweet skin track you set Friday.  They said they set off six hours ahead of me...  I figure they had enough punishment being at it all day postholing to get to base camp -and to top that they broke through two crevasses...

As the shade cooled the side hill it was a nice sight to see you guys at camp just ahead.  T...

I have never seen a hiker show up to help a snowmobiler,  but we always goto the rescue of hikers, and skiers.

See the below story (which Paul Russell posted in reply #4 of this thread):

Great day out!  Thought I'd toss up a quick photo of you looking very small on the very large Coleman Headwall.
Great report, thanks.

Man, those convex roll-overs like in the second photo always spook me a bit.
Thanks for the heads up, Niko. Feel free to call me directly at the number above if you'd like. This trip just finished and I'll be debriefing over the coming days. Cheers,
Jeremy

There is a basic issue of fairness here.

I agree.

You mentioned 200+ people lined up on the Muir Snowfield last weekend, all of them climbing under their own power.  No machines.  As we all know, this is routine.  Just another sunny day on Mt Rainier.

Imagine all those people riding snowmobiles.  Heck, imagine just ten percent of those people...
Awesome report Andy! That boy's got a way with words I tell ya. It's amazing that there is so much lower snow there for this time of year.

Joe,
At 330 were they serving beer outside on top of Crystal?

There was quite a line for that delicacy.
This lift serve is a great way to holdut for Sunrise to open, but does not do much for touring legs.

Only 2.7% of the contiguous U.S. has been designated as wilderness.

Just so your aware snowmobiles are not allowed in all NON Wilderness areas. You stated this to sound like there is only 2.7% of land that we can not use? Your groups have a much larger percent of open area to use than snowmobilers.

My point with the rescue story is hiker will thr...
Absolutely.  Our researched before hand looked like going climbers left (Ridge route) was the way to go vs traversing the Upper Nisqually.  I dont think anybody in our group was in the mood to be on 50-60degree ice on Sunday :) 40-45 suited us just fine.

Matt enjoyed the bivy site, less windy than our tent location.  Only problem was his sleeping pad sprung a leak.  So he wasn't as comfy as he would have liked.
Hey Matt, good to see you again even though I didn't realize it at the time. And good for you all continuing on to the crater. I still recall the Kaleetan trip well.
Zap,
I soon will need a tutorial on the Seirra.

E_N,
Thanks for the compliment on artwork ! I'm trying to step it up a  bit to compete  with the quality of Amar's reports.  ;)

Joe,

After finishing "The Vogt Traverse no. 1" I'll be picking his brain for some more.

I dig the artwork with the saddle drawn in!  About time MS paint got its day in the sun.

Nicely done on the long traverse.  Glad I'm not the only one who buy buys sunscreen by the bucket.
Great trip.

Do you mean Duffy Lake?  What route did you ski on Oval?  Thanks

We skied the southeast bowl off Oval Peak.  We came in the West Fork of the Buttermilk, not Eagle/Oval Creek, so the duffy lake route didn't work for us.  It looked like a great ski, however, and probably would have been better snow given the north exposure.  Here's an action photo showing the af...
Glad the info helped.  You missed the fun of the Ridge Route with the 50-60+ degree wall... Figured it'd be less hair raising and faster taking the easy route.  Hope Matt enjoyed the bivy spot .
I have no problem with the concept of wilderness and that snowmobilles aren't allowed in wilderness although I do think boundary lines should take the terrain into account.

But you want more wilderness and existing legal snowmobile areas changed to wilderness.
You want buffer zones between wilderness and existing legal snowmobile areas thereby restricting them further.
You want snowmobiling banned in the alpine on Baker, St Helens and Mt Adams because it's a...
Ron - I was in the party of 4 that I believe camped next to you on Saturday night.  I thought you looked familiar, and indeed now realize that we skied together many years ago on Kaleetan.  My group stubbornly continued up all the way to the crater rim, turning around in the wind and fog before skiing out of the cloud onto the upper Nisqually.  The personal highlights for me were climbing up and skiing down the upper Nisqually between the seracs, looking down on 7000 ft of glacier relief and ski...
Sweet!  Glad we could help you loosen up the legs on Saturday.  Also glad Murr didn't puke.
NICE!  Way to play it safe..common sense is a lovely thing..

Nice photos .... got get up there some time
