Lowell, thanks for date correction. Someone told me that you have a website with alot of skier history.Do you have a link. Does anyone know what the courtisy is concerning commenting on TR. with out it being considered a hijack.

This is my main site:

More specific ski history is here:

Thanks for the kind words, fellas.  Yeah, I was a little surprised to find it still condition this late in the year, but this has been an unusual year all around, at least in Montana.  I was also a little surprised to be able to unlock the route on the first trip, given its complex, challenging, and dangerous nature.

As for the comparative safety of climbing versus descending from the top down - I suppose it'd be safest to climb the route first with a partner and rope,...

nice work getting the whole family in on it. my memories of skiing with the family go back to easter sundays sunrise service at the top of the gondolier at stowe.(sweet run on) one free ride to the top thanks to jesus. saw you at the mazama store saturday and on madison ave on monday. thought you looked familier.

Definitely Madison Ave... but we didn'...
Thanks Oyvind! They were retrieved today.
The new Camp Muir webcam is now online as of June 2 (although uploads still appear to be intermittent) at http://www.nps.gov/webcams-mora/muir.jpg. The time stamp on the image is incorrect for now, showing January 2000.

Here is a nice image from 7:17am on June 3, 2011:

Nice TR, I love the comparison photo.

The bird looks like ptarmigan.
Nice trip report, Ross!  I'm glad you and family were able to make the most of the weekend.

its a long way to climb only to have to cough on engine exhaust and listen to noise pollution.

I realize I am the only dissenting poster in this thread , but no matter...
If I really wanted to avoid engine exhaust and noise pollution ( which I completely understand) I personally would stay away from a route where snowmobiles were legally allowed and probably g...
Great, thanks for the info. It's forecasted to be quite warm relative to last weekend, so we'll make sure to be very observant on the mountain.

If all goes well, hopefully we'll have a great TR for you come early next week!
We didn't see any slide activity at all (I don't think it warmed up enough except at treeline and below), but there were a lot of cornices on the Crescent Glacier, and one on the southeast edge of the false summit. If it gets really warm I'd keep a close eye on things, and definitely bring a transceiver and shovel. Also keep some reserves and time for the true summit - it's quite a ways still from the false summit. Have a great time and let us know how it goes!
Thanks for this TR, Jason.  Myself and some buddies are thinking of heading up Adams for a summit attempt this weekend, and were curious as we hadn't seen any other TRs yet.

Ranger at Trout Lake station said today that there was some slide activity below the Lunch Counter. Did you guys see any slide activity, and if so, any idea if it was wet snow slides or slab?

Appreciate the beta.
I thought upper nash was fun about 8am on Sunday, there is some debris in it and it wasn't firm corn skiing, may have been more than 3 inches of mush penetration as Silas described but I was using some swap meet tlt4s so who knows what it was like in boots that cost $1 large! I was impressed at the amount of snow, no real stream crossings and the lift ramp up top looked flat. The entrance to nash is real mellow with all that snow. I am used to the end of season scraps being much less accomm...

Can you explain what proto
Corn is.

proto-
combining form

Original; primitive
- prototherian
- prototype

First; anterior; relating to a precursor
- protomartyr
- protozoan

Core skier talk for snow that is on its way to becoming corn but is not yet corn!
Neato B!

I usually just go up to the bottum and run away...

Back to climbing on the roof and cleaning gutters for me.

I'll also stifle myself now and stick to warm sunny basalt, granite, ryolite and sandstone.
Sweet trip, bstory.

Sounds like you have the four corners well covered!
Great TR, and thank you for confronting our motorized counterparts, its a long way to climb only to have to cough on engine exhaust and listen to noise pollution.
Hey Kam,

Nice work, i recognize the spot.  I looked at it many times when i lived there, good job getting up there.  I'm the guy who pines for the Carson Range and Eastern Sierra everytime a TR is posted here.  I've got to stop myself from looking at your post from now on, it's too hard on me.  (Probably won't happen.)  Luckily, the sun's coming out right now and the weather looks great for the coming weekend, i'll be on the snow...
Awesome trip. In my 3-4 tries of that route, I never did get it in condition enough to ski it. I'm excited to see that it is still good even this late in the season. Awesome work!
Great TR Amar and fully accurate account of my observations as well.  Thanks for your articulate account of the day.  Glad I got that photo of you skiing the Roman Wall above the clouds and Black Buttes!
The weather came in and out. On Saturday evening a thunderstorm went by us to the south but missed us. Sunday was variable visibility, but no precip where we were. One party turned around just below Lunch Counter reporting that you couldn't see a thing, but we had mostly good visibility. When I was on the false summit clouds were coming in and out around the summit, and the cloud deck kept enveloping treeline, which made me a little (more) nervous about my descent - I was concerned that I c...
Dude thats awsome. I almost went up that weekend too!!!! I looked at the weather and it said cloudy and snowing. Did you run into any of that up there? Good TR btw!
I think they're somewhat sneaky and mobile.  But I'm not trying to be argumentative so sorry if it seems so.  I'll also stifle myself now and stick to warm sunny basalt, granite, ryolite and sandstone.

Sweet trip, bstory.
Yeah, good point. I was just thinking from the perspective of having climbed it before and already knowing where those nasty cracks are.  Id rather ski over them next time than boot across them on the way up.

I'll shut up now and stick to climbing warm granite.
What an in depth report.

Can you explain what proto
Corn is.

Well done, bstory.

How would dropping into it help with knowing where those nasty bergschrund holes are at the bottom of the couloir?  It seems like that would increase the risk, to me.  At least climbing it you can scout it and make a conscientious decision of where the best place to ski through there is.

Edit: Perhaps I understand if you're doing it solo.  Maybe in that case it's just risky both ways.
Nice one! I had a similar experience on the ICG this winter with thinly veiled schrund and crevasses. The hazards of the ICG probably merits a "top in" approach to this line. AJ Scott had an up close and personal experience with that huge bergschrund last spring!
Hell of a first TR -- sounds pretty sporty on the Ice Cliff, glad you found your way through it.  Had my palms sweating a bit.
can I ask what upper Nash was like if you hit it? hoping it didn't slide I did it on the 21st of May and liked it.

Thanks Mlike
great shot of the bird shaped creep line over by the spires,.. not sure what they call that slide path..?
Thanks for the great report Amar.  I am in complete agreement with restricting the access area for snowmobilers on the Easton glacier.  Several years ago, I was involved in an incident on the Easton where a snowmobiler had fallen into a crevasse with his machine, and we rescued him on our descent.  As you noted, snowmobilers are ill equipped for glacier travel and are at considerable risk of breaking through snow bridges with their weight.   We were the last skiers on the mountain that day, and...
Thanks Amar for another absolutely  fantastic trip report and photos!!

Got to get my self up north and do the big B..

I'm thinking that the bad apples might be outnumbering the good ones, at least down here in Central Oregon ( the good ones must feel outnumbered hence not stepping up to the plate..).

Was skiing Bach yesterday and heaps of ripped up future corn from the bad apples (must be the folks saving spots at Dutchman Parking for their 4 day snomoe...
Amar,
Great tr and pics and thank you for confronting the sledders. This is not an isolated occurrence and happens all over the state. A grave travesty that they are allowed on Mt. Baker, St. Helens, Adams, etc.
This is just going to cause the ultimate regulation of where they will be allowed to go in the future. I just don't understand why the law breakers continue to do this year after year and the legal sledders don't put a stop to it themselves before the Forest Service d...

Tell that to Fred Beckey. He often used skis for his appoaches.Saw a 1945 picture of him on Silverstar off now HWy 20. He used leather boots, wood skis and leather and steel binding. As for late 70's Don,Eric,Steve, Dave, Eric, etc. all used pins in late 70's, Most still do. The gear was crappy by todays standard, but those boys were really tuff, no sleding devices for thses guys...

+1

This might not be your personal opinion, but it IS mine. Snowmobiling on Mt Baker is a travesty.

We took rd 4930 from lake kachess. Lake Lila might be a better option in winter. If I were to go back to hibox with the skiboards ..it would definitely be in winter.
Nice! great to hear Dave's back on skis again!
Olyski, if you PM me I can give you numerous tour ideas
These are really cool shots, nice work! I was checking out the Whistler coulies on Sunday from across the road and pondering just how much snow was still in there.  I was last up there ~5 yrs ago and those lines off the back were really enticing.   But no leather boots for me.

now with pics.

GaryJan,  I had hoped the squall would be short and it would be clear and cool overnight...  just didn't happen.  Optimistic reading of the weather report.

stay tuned for lucky number 5

the joke is probably because it was skied by some guy in the 50's wearing home made skis with nothing but sinew and hiking boots.

now that would be impressive, being as SR 20's ribbon cutting wasn't until 1972... and given that sort of an approach, seriously, no joke.    :)

cartoons about mountaineering... wow!  funny...&...
Do you have some route info for these tours? I may be headed there next week. I am somewhat familiar with the Teanaway, but more in the Beverly/Bean/Standup creek areas.
also, in 20 years when splitboarding technology makes our gear antiquated, trevor can always pull the "I rode that 20 years ago in soft boots and strap on binders..." card

really, who cares as long as you are having fun?
the joke is probably because it was skied by some guy in the 50's wearing home made skis with nothing but sinew and hiking boots.

Wasn't trying to imply you guys where claiming anything, nor detract from the fact that it is a great looking line. Just being silly.  'it's not a complete trip...."is from this humorous video...

(note, I have no clue who made this)
wow!  way to get the family out. What a bunch of troopers!

Very inspiring. Time to get my 7 yr. old out touring...  pm me if you have any out-grown gear gathering dust in the closet...

As far as I can tell if a tree falls in the woods, it fell.  No more and no less completely, even if documented on the interwebs.

The human factor on the other hand may say "The joke used to be that all of the Hwy 20 lines were skiied by 3 pinners back in the late 70's."  Not sure why this is a joke or even why it's no longer a joke ("used to be").  Sounds plausible to me.  Whistler would be fun even on wooden planks and a couple...

You can add St Helens to that travesty list as well.

Speaking of which, when I skied St Helens several weeks ago we saw a group of around a dozen snomos inside the snomo free wedge on the south side. My buddy and I confronted this group and talked to a couple of them. We encountered the totally ignorant attitude (and the rest didn't stop). "I'm just...
Way to get out guys.

Rule of thumb. If you can see it, it's been skied. If you can see if from somewhere you are skiing, it's most likely been skied as well.

as always though, it's not a complete trip until it's been reported!

welcome back Marcus!
